How does the Earth cast a shadow on the Moon if they're both visible in the sky above our heads?

In a lunar eclipse, both sun and moon are never in the sky over our heads. Rather, they might be visible at opposite horizons. Often, the moon appears red, because of the way the light penetrates the atmosphere of the earth as it goes on its way towards the moon. This is the same kind of red that gives us our red dawns.
