Condensation would be a concern. Also any oil or whatever in the fan bearings would thicken and put the fans under more stress. How much more I couldn't say.
Have you thought about buying some cheap insulation of some kind and lining the garage to keep some off the heat in to avoid the cold but still keep it cool for the miner?

Regarding heating the house with mining, it is probably not enough to provide 100%, more like 30-50% (if you are below 3.5-4kw). I am doing a pure "experiment' right now with about 3.4 kw plus the rest (light, TV, cable box, etc. etc). Temp are 72-73F in the house with 52-54F outside. Did not use the NG heating so far. The specs for the S9 state the ambient operating temperature should be 0-40 deg C.
I live in a cold place and my sole S9 is set up in my garage. It's getting colder and I expect the ambient garage temperature to drop below 0 deg C soon (its 4 deg C now).
Are there serious risks to run the miner below 0 deg C? I was thinking a few deg below wouldn't be a huge deal, but maybe condensation can become a concern?
Thanks
catastrophic failure was less likely when i had this situation with the hosted S7 (in fact, they did not fail), but they could go down and then it would be difficult to restart them in the same place without heating them up a bit first; someone with SP20 in a cold/wet space invented the technique of heating them up with a blow dryer on high heat. Early warning would be dropping out of one board or a deep decrease in hashing (it would not even show XX sometimes, just drop speed). I hope that this helps.

Thanks for the tips gentlepeople. I will go look for some cheap insulation or consider a decent space heater that kicks in at a certain ambient temp.
I did already notice a drop in hashrate this morning since it got really cold last night, so I'll act on this soon.
Cheers

Just thought I'd update here on my repair process with my Batch 23 Antminer S9. It arrived last week and this week 2 boards stopped operating. I contacted bitmain and was told to return the unit to Hong Kong as per usual. After I complained about the shipping cost being too high bitmain offered to cover the return shipping. So far I must say the service is excellent and did not expect this from bitmain due to the high complaints about warranty. I was pretty shocked when they said they would pay for all round shipping. Great service so far and really gives me hope that they still care about customers. I hope other people dealing with repairs get the same treatment as this
That is stunning I have never read this from anyone but you. I'd assume people would usually want to keep it on the down low but I felt the community should know. If you would like proof I'd be happy to provide it to you in a PM Philip. The reason I won't provide it here as it has sensitive information but will be happy to show it to a trusted member. Edit: I've purchased 18 Antminer S9's in the past 2 months so maybe that has something to do with it ? I don't know just an idea Did you receive your repaired S9 back from Bitmain? How long did the repairs take?

Hey team,
I noticed my S9 today (for a few hours) experienced a drop in hashrate for 1 board. It went from a typical 4600 GH/s down to 1250 for about 3 hours until I noticed. There were no xxx or anything. I restarted the miner and it is hashing like normal again. I will continue to monitor. I've had the miner for about 2 weeks.
Should I be concerned? Do you think the hashboard would have recovered on it's own eventually? Do you think it would have been bad to continue without restarting?
Thanks

I would guess that the temperature of the chips dipped too low. It is a common problem for the S7 as well. You will not usually see any Xs when it happens either.

When I had the same issue on my 2x S9 both boards died and I sent them back for under warranty repair, now they are working just fine, but couple days ago my other board died and I have to pay for repair because they are out of warranty. Keep an eye on it you'd be lucky if that was one time accident, cheers! PS. does anybody knows where are they going to restock S9s ?

is this a theoretical question? you don't plug S9 into the socket to start with, you connect it via PCIe cables to power supply unit (PSU), which typically has an on/off switch. it is fine to switch antminer off by switching the PSU off, but wait minimal of 20-30 sec to switch it back on. you can only reboot the software via gui as far as i remember, although if you don't provide correct pool info, it would not mine, but I am not sure if this is good for the miner as boards might heat up anyway (not sure about the latter point).

awesomeminer.exe will allow you to shut mining off but not power. Doesn't really pull any power not hashing Just kills the bmminer program.

i just don't see a on/ off switch on the BITMAIN APW3-12-1600-B2....what do i do ? Wow. They did not provide a switch? see instructions here (two methods): https://enshop.bitmain.com/files/download/APW3-12-1600%20user%20guide.pdfpage 5/8 I assume that any PC mobo on/off switch would do for method #1, assuming that distance between on/off and gnd is like on computer motherboards. Search for "motherboard power switch" on ebay. yanking power from the wall is iffy (there will be a huge spark). At least figure out which circuit it is on (in power box) and maybe switch the circuit off before disconnecting power from the wall. BEWARE that PSU even when disconnected can still jolt you pretty good if you touch the power plug after disconnecting.

If you've got one S9 hooked upto the APW3 PSU then if you unplug the PSU from the wall then it will stop mining and switch off. Possibly run for a second or two once power is off as the capacitors will have to discharge.

i just don't see a on/ off switch on the BITMAIN APW3-12-1600-B2....what do i do ? You should see a pair of yellow and green wires leading to a 2-pin plug with green jumper. That is the DC on/off for the PSU. Pull the jumper and DC to the miners is off, connected the jumper and DC is on. That is where you can put a switch to replace the jumper if desired. As for 'power remains on when (power) plug pulled' is just the stored power being bled off by the fan. That power reserve is NOT feeding the miner because the supply turns the DC output off when the line drops out.
