Greetings!

I have a S9 that decided to have a board partially quit randomly, then I stupidly upgraded the firmware to the 11/29 version, where it entered an endless loop of:

get_pic_software_version
get_pic_software_version: version[0] = 0x42
After restore: chain[0] PIC fw version=0x42
chain[0] PIC need restore ...

Once those fail, it never seems to get what it wants, it goes to count the asics per board and ends up with 0's, it never starts hashing. I've left it on overnight the last few nights, it gets in the need restore loop and never actually does any work.

Went back to the old firmware pre autotune and one of the good boards doesn't even try booting anymore (No flash or anything), so it's down to one working board.

I'm pretty sure it's down to the pic firmware, if I could find a way to flash it back and hopefully verify it to a previous version (Any ideas on what firmware version is good?) at least the two good boards should work.

I did try stealing the single-board-test file and config from the autotune version, I have it running on an old non autotune firmware trying to reset the pic on the boards. No luck so far, but it's getting different numbers, so I'm hopeful. Not sure of the batch #, I ordered them in early September. Cyclone V boards.

I have tried it with just one board connected at a time (Known good boards and the bad board) Still nothing even after hours of waiting per test.

(UPDATE)
It's version updated! Not sure if it's good yet, but it's progress
get_pic_software_version: version[0] = 0xcc
Check chain[0] PIC fw version=0xcc
chain[0] PIC need restore ...

Looks like single-board test is happy with version 0xcc, it's moved on to chain[1]

Darn, rebooted it and chain[0] is reading 0x00 again, it got reset / wiped randomly

I'm starting to wonder if their "repair" is just reflashing the hash board firmware with a special devkit. That could explain why they won't share the repair process, because it would cost them easy repair $$$.

Got damn it, I now have 1x dead hash board with my S9 11.85Ths non-autotune model.
I contacted BitmainWarranty.
Does someone from the EU area have some experience with them?
I know that the closest service point near me is Russia.
Let's see if they could fix it there.

I just unplug the bad boards and then it runs fine.  Out of the 12 S9's I have bought from Bitmain, 5 of them have needed repair.

They have never gotten over 72F.  I have 140 S7's and maybe 10 bad boards between them all.  Out of the 200+ S5's I had there were maybe 5 bad boards total and out of the 300+ S3's I had maybe 4 bad boards.

I really hope they fix the S9's.  The R4's seem to be running great.  I have had no problems with them.

So 7 bad boards out of 36 total S9 boards = 19.4% failure rate.  Ugh.

I have had 3 bad boards from 7 s9's, 1 board out of 2 r4's.  Very disappointing quality as of late from Bitmain

Still no word from Bitmain warranty in Denver on the board they have of mine and they arent responding to new repair tickets. Crappy quality control and even worse customer service

strange, they replied to me within 24hr, typically.
did you check your service junk mail folder?
In addition, some providers don't even show what they consider junk mail, which could make these emails invisible, so you have to go in and MANUALLY assign bitmainwarranty.com as a trusted domain.

Woo! I got a red light again on a hash board after:

get_pic_software_version: version[0] = 0x2
After restore: chain[0] PIC fw version=0x02
reset_iic_pic

It just needs to flash properly to both good boards and it should be good. Third board is probably still dead, may send it back for repairs or just save the money for a competitor machine down the road. Not sure I want to toss good money after bad with Bitmain.

Bad board is reading 0xf1, and the FW doesn't seem to want to update, I can't get it to change at all. Might just scrap it and let and let the two good ones run.

(UPDATE)
Looking good now:

jump_to_app_from_loader
get_pic_software_version
get_pic_software_version: version[0] = 0x2
Check chain[0] PIC fw version=0x02
reset_iic_pic
jump_to_app_from_loader
get_pic_software_version
get_pic_software_version: version[0] = 0x2
Check chain[2] PIC fw version=0x02
reset_iic_pic
jump_to_app_from_loader
get_pic_software_version
get_pic_software_version: version[0] = 0xf1
Check chain[3] PIC fw version=0xf1
chain[3] PIC need restore ...

(UPDATE)
Seems to fail writing firmware a VERY large amount of the time, even if it reads the version as correct the board firmware may still be corrupt / wrong version. I disconnected the first board that was successful so it wouldn't get ruined again by the fw loader. Now I'm running single-board-test against the last two boards until I get another success. The other good board should be fine once I get a good FW write to it.

definitely nothing in spam. I emailed them twice now and the second time I was told:

"sale (Bitmain)

Teck is still attempting to repair fully. Please wait for next update"

My sp is not hashing but all the lights indicate it is working fine. The one line that concerns me is the one that says ethernet link up is full. Any suggestions?

I apologize. Is that the pound symbol that says code or is there another way? Do you have any helpful input as far as why the miner appears to be OK as  far as status lights but is not hashing?

the new firmware can't work if one of your boards have an issue
so just remove data cable from one board at a time and open your machine until you get the damaged one and you machine will work with 2 boards

I don't think its the boards all green lights are flashing normally and I have no xxx's in the ASIC status. It will hash for a little bit and then go to o hashing. I have had a bad board before and had it repaired this seems different. I just received this s9 yesterday. I shouldnt have to download new firmware should I? I don't know how to read kernal logs but one line I noticed said ethernet up link (1000/FULL).

1000 FULL just means you are running Gigabit ethernet, full duplex.   I don't own an S9 so I may be speaking out of turn, but that is typically what that means when you see something like that.

Found the 10/27 and 11/08 autotune firmwares didn't have their test data obfuscated like in the 11/25 and 11/29 versions. More data to try to reverse engineer the asic fw programming process. They also used a different version of single-board-test for both 10/27 and 11/08, looks like they were an early work in progress when they were released.

Still have two bad boards, the controller can communicate with the PICs but they fail all of the tests. Once the fw fails to restore them a dozen times it fails over to bmminer and starts with no boards online in the GUI.

The hash_s8_app.txt appears to have the software for the PIC, it's 3200 lines and the restore process is 3200 blocks. Smiley Looks like all of the autotune versions use the exact same hashboard firmware code, 10/27, 11/08, 11/25, and 11/29.

If I can find a way to pull that code from one of the good pre autotune hash boards I might be able to rewrite it to the failed boards and get them running again. But they didn't come with that code in their firmware.

Might be a lost cause, too many dark tunnels of obfuscated code that they are keeping secret. Rather than sending these boards in for repair I'd rather spend the money on an Avalon or something else down the road. Bitmain devices seem to be terribly flaky and poorly designed. But as long as I have them to play with I will.

If anyone has any autotune firmwares before 10/27 please let me know! I'd love to have a copy for my work.

(UPDATE)
Renaming hash_s8_app.txt causes the single-board-test to NOT restore the firmware a trillion times, but it still does all the other steps. Not useful for me, but really a time saver and interesting.

All I want is a little program with full R/W access to the hashboard memory and PIC, that can't be too much to ask can it? Unfortunately the tools to do that are all locked up in the single-board-test binary and associated bits with no source code available.

Go check the sidehack thread about the S7-LN, I think this is what sidehack do to tweak them. (Not sure)

I'll take a look, thanks!

(UPDATE)

Yup, that's probably exactly what I needed! I ordered a tester off of ebay, now just to wait and see. I'm guessing it's a similar procedure to what they're doing on the S7LN.

Might be a way to fix hashboard softbricks soon if it works, without going through Bitmain! I'll be happy to share when I get it figured out.

I now just tried with the PICkit3 to:
1. Read a good PIC firmware from a good hash board
2. Write a good PIC firmware to a dead hash board

No effect. The dead hash board is still dead.
So it is probably not just "soft bricked".
So I wait for the answer from BitmainWarranty (www.bitmainwarranty.com).

I have previous experience with the PICkit3.

Do you have the image file from the good hash board? I'd like to have a look at it if you could send it to me.

In what way is your board dead? Mine died immediately AFTER a firmware update, it never hashed on the new firmware, so I'm pretty sure it's software related, unless the bad software caused something to overheat.

Bitmain thinks it's an incompatible firmware, which is weird because they said it was for "all" but we'll see if they can help me. They responded to my first e-mail and I gave them more information, now I'm waiting to hear back. Thankfully I only flashed one of my S9's, the rest will probably never get a firmware update, it's too risky.

I don't know how to read kernal logs but one line I noticed said ethernet up link (1000/FULL).

okay  there are multiple fails.

you may have the everything looks good fail all boards have a light  but 1 boards does not work fail.

if you were on old software   you would show say 3 x 4000 = 12000  power would be say 1200 watts  but the pools would give you say 2x 4000 = 8000 hash.  then in a week or so the board will fully die the little lite on it will vanish and you have the more classic fail.

with auto tune  you get 0 hash but pull full watts with the 1 dead but shows good board.

so pull two cables mine with board A  for 4 hours  and report back
then  pull the cable on A add the cable to B  mine for four hours report back.

then pull the cable on b add the cable to C mine for four hours report back.

with luck  2 of your boards will hash.  if so then put the cables on both of them and see if you go to 8000 or so.,

when all is said and done you should or could have 2 working boards.

mail the dead one back in.

Here is the HEX-file PIC16F1704_firmware_good_condition_board_S9_11.85ths_model_non-autotune.hex :
https://mega.nz/#!4l8HzB7A!R_Fomh8O5uSk8VVqmRseGduxSbvl_ajDNcATl3z22hA

Make sure that you know what you are doing. I take no responsibility on this.

My board went dead just suddenly without any warning.
