Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order

I tried updating one of my first S9s I think it was 550mhz
I updated first to the new auto tune firmware, but nothing happened even after setting pools and rebooting.
So then I loaded the S9 recovery firmware, and it started working again.
Then try the new autotune firmware, and I'm getting this (I think one board has always been dead, so that is not a surprise)
Is it ever going to start hashing? Been 2 hours.

Waited 2 hours, so should have came back up.
Re-saved pool settings and did a hard power cycle.
Waited 12 hours, nothing, just keeps looping those values like it's crashing and restarting.

Mine did that too, after a long back and forth with bitmain they determined that my pre autotune model should not have had the autotune firmware installed. After going back to the old firmware two of the three boards don't even try to work anymore. So when they say the firmware is for "all", I wouldn't trust it.

The good news is your PIC software looks intact, so if you can get the pre autotune firmware back in it should *crosses fingers* work again. 0x02 is the "good" version and works in the pre autotune 7/13 + 7/15 firmwares.

Blah blah blah, voided warranty, blah blah blah, malfunction, blah blah blah do at your own risk, will likely cause fires and death and destruction to all you hold dear boilerplate here.

Don't use this firmware if your model was ordered after mid September and is an autotune version, as it probably won't work, and will likely cause doom and destruction to your warranty.

The official Bitmain solution was to disconnect the bad board(s) from the controller and it should work. It didn't work for me though. If you can't load the old firmware try running it with just one board at a time to find the bad one.

Im a bit apprehensive to press it without checking here first seeing as I've got all my BTC tided up in it.

no, it does not do anything, really. It will save the file on the desktop, that's it.
You cannot update it back (rollback from another firmware verssion) from that archive, I tried.
Maybe it could update your pool settings if you changed them, etc.

The archive function has always only backed up the miners settings eg, pool info and such, so you don't have to renter the info if the miner is reset. Why in their Infinite Wisdom BM doesn't also have it backup the firmware -- who knows...

Crap. Was going to try the autotune nonsense to get the BMminer v2 instead of the v1. But cant risk if I cant roll it back as I need the freq set low and the fans minimal. Never mind. Thanks for the info guys. Always a pleasure.

Tip for all. I don't do this but if you run an S9 at home, and like to control the fans, my opinion is don't upgrade the firmware.

Bitmain should just update the bminer software to 2.0 in the firmware for those models and release it without the autotune.

And for those who like to ridicule people running miners at home, don't bother. Everyone is a grown up here and can make their own decisions about stuff.

How about just an option that autos the fans according to the temps but still give us the full range of freqs. At least then people can turn it up or down to suit electricity/ambient temp requirements and the fans work as little as necessary to avoid any excess noise.

But also Just an update to BMminer v2 would be nice as Biffa has said.

I received my repaired S9 hash board today, installed, powered up, and now one of the other hash boards (which I purchased from BitmainWarranty) is not working.

Anyone know if this board has a warranty if I purchased it from BitmainWarranty? It appeared to be used when I got it too

I sent an email to BitmainWarranty but I'm sure it will take them days to respond as usual.

They should still have a 90 day warranty, but call and verify.

I'm pretty sure they and Bitmain in China sell "refurbished" as new a very large amount of the time. One of my "brand new" S9's looks like it was an older refurb too. Interestingly enough it's the one that failed.

It's a cool business plan, sell stuff that frequently breaks due to bad design and/or software, get paid to repair it, then sell the same "repaired" thing to another customer at full price. Repeat and profit at the frustration of your clients.

The 10-15% failure rate is insanely high for any modern technology company, if there was genuine competition that might change, but why should they bother spending on R&D to make things better when they're the only game in town?

Can't blame them, business is business, and they play it well.

I got a quick response this time, 30 day warranty on the hash board so I am shipping back today. We shall see how long it takes to get it back.

I also have an R4 that only hashes on one board and not sure if I should send it to Hong Kong or Denver for repair.

Yeah  I am 1/7  that is 14.2%

My repairs were all free .   My costs were shipping 15 to them 25 back to me  so 4 x 40 = 160

I purchased some fans and 2 spare old firmware boards which are no longer available  cost about 300

So 460-500   spent for repairs maintenance and spare parts.  against 7 units of s9.   Down time  say 1 full month of 1 s9  which is around 250 in coin

so lets say 750 lost for 7 s9's

 I won't count the 25-30 extra trips from my house to the solar array  6 mile round trip

Cool, Thanks for sharing the details.  So it is a good news, bad news story.  Good that they all failed within warranty, but still lots of costs associated even if the warranty covered the repairs.  

The failure rates are pretty high.  I would think Bitmain would be looking to clean this mess up.  This has to be costing them money as well.  Maybe that is what they are attempting with the auto tune units?

Maybe $215 or about per board.

I sent Bitmain Warranty an s9 hash board that was still under warranty but they charged me $200. You have to send to Hong Kong to get warranty work covered.
