has anyone tried to unlock the 8 computing units that are rumored to be on the 290x?

 That was a very few very early R9 290 units that were actually R9 290X GPUs with the extra CUs locked in the BIOS.

 The R9 390X and R9 290X used the same GPU, but the newer card had BIOS updates and faster RAM (and sometimes more ram).
 There should be cases where a 390X BIOS will work on a 290X, particularly if it's the same manufacturer and same "model", but there is no guarentee.

 Keep in mind that the top-end 3xx (and 2xx) cards have 384 bit (280x/380x not sure on the 280/380 non-X) or even 512 bit (290/390 AND UP) wide memory access, which makes their somewhat slower memory clocks give significantly more memory bandwidth than the 256 bit wide memory on the RX 470/480.
 This isn't as critical on ZEC which doesn't appear to be as memory-hard as ETH, but it still matters.

 Core clock speeds on the 4xx also didn't increase all that much over the high-end 2xx/3xx series cards - AMD seems to have aimed more at dropping power consumption with VERY good success on these MAINSTREAM cards - while the core count on the RX 470 is the SAME as the R9 280x/380x (2048) and the RX 480 has FEWER cores (2304) than the R9 290/390 (2560) or the 290x/390x (2816).

 Expecting the RX 480 MAINSTREAM card to OUTperform the one generation old top-of-the-line R9 390X is just WRONG, given the actual specs on the cards - the clockrate improvement isn't enough to outweight the lower core count, and the memory bandwidth just isn't there at all comparatively.

 Keep in mind that AMD started near the MIDpoint on performance (and a much lower price point) on their new generation - until they release a potential RX 490 or higher, the older cards are going to remain the performance champs (at the cost of HUGE electric usage).

 This is actually some bad news for NVidia, as the midrange AMDs are arguing pretty well against higher-end NVidia cards at a much lower price point for MOST usage....

they didnt have faster ram it was just clocked higher it comes down to if u have elpida or hynix only diff besides that is the 390x stock has 8gb and fewer components cause the chips run more eff cause its a later spin of the same die just they fine tuned the process besides that they are = in speed clock 4 clock

mine is the powercolor first reference with 4 gig. Can I still do it?

from the above u have elpida ram which is slower than hynix just use the bios from the modded thread from here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1676474 since u have a ref like u said scrol to the bottom and use those set clocks to whatever keeps the temp 75c or lower and mem to 1450 depending on how good those elpidas r u might get a stable 1475 on the ram

I have it running stable at 1110/1440 @80C. will be buying the ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme III cooler. They say it helps both with the temp and mostly noise. Staying at a hotel and the noise is really a problem lol

that doesnt matter when u run a modded ram timings as what is done is the timings used on lower clocks are set to the higher giving u better speed at higher clocks than norm but can also reduced total speed u could do before on stock bios like ram on a pc if u set tight timings u wont oc as much

You get interessting result with this driver on R9 Fury family ?
I got 9 x R9 Fury something like 330-370 H/s (-45% power limit)
With -asm 0 -a 2 parameters.

1150/1900 obviously custom bios undervolted etc. Still pulls 890 at the wall, but the point of my post is as long as you know how to balance rails and tune everything right there is no reason you can't run a PSU at its max capacity.

UPDATE

     I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm getting 260-267 h/s on 10 Sapphire Nitro+ rx 480 OC 8gb cards totaling 2580 - 2610 h/s (stock bios). According to GPU-Z, each card draws an average of 115w (core), but shows intermittent spikes no greater than the maximum specified power consumption for the card (225w). Running Windows 10 on both rigs with crimson V. 16.11.5 (this is the most recent update, that I've found, that will recognize a bios mod).


GPU Settings:

Core clock = 1400
Mem clock = 2040
Voltage = +6 mV
Fan = 100%
Pow lim = +50%

     I could do 8 cards on the MSI Gaming 5 (7x PCI-e + 1x M.2 ---> PCI-e adapter), but the rig lost some stability once I went over 6x GPUs, even with enough power. The Gigabyte ga-z97x Gaming 7 can house 7 cards (6x PCI-e + 1x M.2 ---> PCI-e adapter), but as I said before, stability seemed to become more of an issue with more than 6x GPUs. Each rig has been running for about a week without any resets or crashes. Just in case the miner or machine does crash, I have made some simple .bash scripts to restore all of my settings and programs upon reset. I have also used the Windows Event Log and Manager to reset in the event of a freeze crash. So all in all, I plan to have 6 cards per rig and I'll probably have to add another PSU to the first rig when I reach that point.


*DAS IMPORTANT*

     When it comes to power supplies, it is almost ALWAYS cheaper to buy 2x units and an adapter, than it is to shell out the money for even a 1200w PSU. My EVGA Supernova P2 1200w Platinum was about $220 (on sale), but I could have bought 2x  700w-850w PSUs + a convergence adapter for 2/3 the price. Also, Never purchase a PSU with a rating less than gold; it will save you both time and money in the long run.

     On a final note, I am aware that there are mods to allow for more than 4 GPUs on Windows 7 and more than 5 GPUs on Windows 8, but save yourself from a giant, time consuming pain in the d!<k hole and just kiss the ring and buy Windows 10. I can assure you that the $100 is worth it.

You can purchase windows 10 and license online for 35.00. I purchased win 10 from a newegg vendor for 37.00 a while back.

From what I remember, someone got it working, but had to change some settings in the BIOS.

All the gaming 5 MoBo's I have seen, have the original bios v1.1. I flashed mine to 1.4 and found it stable and left it there. I would suggest anyone building on this MoBo, go to MSI and take a look at the available firmware.

Running Windows 10 on both rigs with crimson V. 16.11.5 (this is the most recent update, that I've found, that will recognize a bios mod).

CPU: Pentium Haswell 3258
PSU: EVGA Supernova P2 1200w Platinum (ran my first 7 cards on this rig for a while, but could only run at -i 2 and no overclock)
SSD: 120gb (partitioned for Ubuntu (30gb) and Windows 10 (90gb))
Memory: 8gb DDR3 1600 (2 x 4gb (2x > 1x))
GPU: 5x Sapphire Nitro+ rx 480 OC 8gb (stock bios).
Risers: The green ones with the black usb cable??
Display: HDMI Headless Display Adapter (Only one is needed for the FIRST PCI-e slot recognized by the motherboard).

Second Rig:

Motherboard: Gigabyte ga-z97x Gaming 7
CPU: Pentium Haswell 3258
PSU: Rosewill Photon 1050w Gold Rated + SeaSonic SSR-650RM 650W Gold Rated (connected with dual PSU adapter)
SSD: 120gb (partitioned for Ubuntu (30gb) and Windows 10 (90gb))
Memory: 8gb DDR3 1600 (2 x 4gb (2x > 1x))
GPU: 5x Sapphire Nitro+ rx 480 OC 8gb (stock bios).
Risers: The black ones with the blue usb cable??   <------Better quality than the green ones. I recommend these.
Display: HDMI Headless Display Adapter (Only one is needed for the FIRST PCI-e slot recognized by the motherboard).
*Power and reset buttons are included ON this motherboard! Amazing.

     I could do 8 cards on the MSI Gaming 5 (7x PCI-e + 1x M.2 ---> PCI-e adapter), but the rig lost some stability once I went over 6x GPUs, even with enough power. The Gigabyte ga-z97x Gaming 7 can house 7 cards (6x PCI-e + 1x M.2 ---> PCI-e adapter), but as I said before, stability seemed to become more of an issue with more than 6x GPUs. Each rig has been running for about a week without any resets or crashes. Just in case the miner or machine does crash, I have made some simple .bash scripts to restore all of my settings and programs upon reset. I have also used the Windows Event Log and Manager to reset in the event of a freeze crash. So all in all, I plan to have 6 cards per rig and I'll probably have to add another PSU to the first rig when I reach that point.


*DAS IMPORTANT*

     When it comes to power supplies, it is almost ALWAYS cheaper to buy 2x units and an adapter, than it is to shell out the money for even a 1200w PSU. My EVGA Supernova P2 1200w Platinum was about $220 (on sale), but I could have bought 2x  700w-850w PSUs + a convergence adapter for 2/3 the price. Also, Never purchase a PSU with a rating less than gold; it will save you both time and money in the long run.

     On a final note, I am aware that there are mods to allow for more than 4 GPUs on Windows 7 and more than 5 GPUs on Windows 8, but save yourself from a giant, time consuming pain in the d!<k hole and just kiss the ring and buy Windows 10. I can assure you that the $100 is worth it.

no need 4 win 10 its a 1min mod and u can buy great psu's for under 100 that are 1kw+ used on ebay all day either mod cheap server psus or buy oems or buy brand name like yours above me personally i only buy single rail psu's why im fond of the old pc power and cooling before ocz buy out but there are others but the pcp&c are great in low ripple super clean single rail i have 1kw-1200w ver of them 10 years old still kickin some r newer

also fyi on psu's if u can run 220v on them they will be more eff

i have 1 of these and its a great psu for a multirail design u can find them around 100 sometimes on ebay this is about max what u can draw from 1 120v socket
