Is the fan speed controlled by the Raspberry Pi, or the 741 itself.

Logically it would be the Pi controller...

looking forward to seeing what the A8 can do. i noticed they had a teaser for it on the blok forge home page: https://www.blokforge.com/

PS does anyone set a custom range for their fan speed % on the 741? Thinking I may be able to tweak mine just a tad lower.

I'm also looking forward to seeing what the A8 can do.
I just missed the last batch of S9's but perhaps that could end up working in my favour. Smiley

Just spotted this post on instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Bcc_p2jl9Ro/

when do you expect it?

My guess is as good as the next man but I'm hoping Canaan make an announcement this month. (this week even ha ha)
Would be awesome if we could also pre-order by January for Feb shipping or sooner.
And hopefully it is over 14th/s and under 1400w required electricity.
All speculation with crossed fingers. Smiley

Apparently it will be first quarter of 2018. A8 is also being teased on Blokforge - https://www.blokforge.com/

Hopefully it will be towards the first part of the quarter rather than the later.

I've been trying to purchase an Avalon 741, but as it is out of stock pretty much everywhere I made in order from Amazon where it is temporarily out of stock and won't charge me until it ships, whenever that may be.  I was looking on Alibaba though, and I found some going for around $1,000, which is quite a good deal it seems even after expensive shipping from China.  My question is, has anyone had any experience ordering one of these on Alibaba before?  I know there can be scams there, but the vendors I was looking at accept credit cards.  I assume that if I got scammed I could just do a chargeback, right?  It almost seems too good to be true since they are hard to find elsewhere, which makes me a bit nervous.

I can't speak to what your credit card will do for chargebacks, better check with them. I personally try to only buy from the distributors or you can try the marketplace here on the forum. That would be a really good deal though considering the A7's went through another price increase recently. I noticed on the Canaan page they are up to 1200.
The other side of the huge increase in BTC price.

https://canaan.io/shop/

That is ridiculous. At that price it then makes ZERO sense not to just buy an S9. Even with the price increase. Bitmain hasn't raised the price of the S9 recently, so all Canaan did was make the 741 less competitive.

I mean, S9's are going for like $3,500 these days if you don't want to wait at least 3 months.  That's kind of the deal these days.  The price isn't really the price if nothing is in stock.  I actually heard back from a lot of the people on Alibaba, and most actually want over $4k for S9's and about half that for the 741s'.

Canaan is giving the good old A3212 chip one more good go.  Smiley
This is the same ASIC chip that was in the A741 model.

They are going to release the AvalonMiner 761.

https://canaan.io/product/avalonminer-761/

Quote from: Canaan
The AvalonMiner 761 is the ROQ Solid Miner, Refined. The AvalonMiner 761 is made with Reliable Open Quality, now with Airforming Cooling Technology and a built in Power Supply Unit

Containing 104 x A3212 16 nm chips, AvalonMiner 761 is the latest Canaan AvalonMiner with a 8.8 Reliable Hashrate Per Second (RTHS).

By connecting our AvalonMiner Controller (sold separately) to a single AUC3 (AvalonMiner USB Convertor 3), you may connect five AvalonMiners. For maximum usage, you may connect the AvalonMiner Controller to 4 AUC3 devices which may each connect to 5 AvalonMiners for a total simultaneous management of twenty AvalonMiner 761 to reach 176 TH/s (RTHS).

If you manage a large installation of AvalonMiners, we can help you to deploy our openly developed AvalonMiner Management System which enables you to efficiently manage thousands of AvalonMiner machines.

This product contains: 1 X AvalonMiner 761, 1 X AvalonMiner USB Converter 3 (AUC3), 1 X AUC3 I2C 5PIN Cable, 1 X Micro-usb cable. The power Supply is integrated with the miner so no additional PSU is required

I started a different thread about a new Avalon 741 (my first) with fan issues, someone suggested I post here instead.

Most of the time when I start the miner (about 8 times now in a week), sometime the fan starts sometimes it does not.  Tonight while testing a new power supply for the Pi (I'm reaching), the fan did not start on the first power cycle.

Miner went to blue and the temp climbed,

API said  0 rpm/33%

I shut it down when the miner hit 80 degrees C.  The fan was not moving.

When I rebooted, the fan did start, fast ramp up, then back down again.  This time it kept running but it was pulsing, and slowed down when the temp was climbing.  it went to 180rpm/95C and I killed power

When spun by hand there seems to be a hitch or catch as it spins.

I opened a ticket with Canaan, I think they will send a new fan
I reflashed the Pi once.
I got a new walwart power supply
I have a new Pi on order from Parallel Miners (ordered Sunday, no shipping info, paid 9$ extra for fast shipping)

1) Could it be the PWM signal, does that come from the miner or the Pi
2) does anyone have a source for a fan, the web does not show me one.

Thanks for any direction given.

That is hilarious. I feel like someone is just sitting there revelling in this, waiting to post 1 smidgen of Info at a time... do I tell them the power consumption, or tease them with the first digit of the hashrate. Haha,

Just excited to see some info coming out.

EDIT: I just read through it more closely, and must say I was surprised they are integrating the PSU on these units.
Atleast there won't be 100 questions about power supplies, and 50 rebuys for a proper one

Did you also see that they posted the Avalon 761? It's an incremental improvement from the 741 (8.8TH/s @ 1350W vs. 7.3TH/s @ 1150W). I'm not sure the marginal gains would be worth buying the 761, but the primary factor will probably be availability of either. Not sure I'm interested in buying new PSUs to run two miners @ 2700W and I think having 1 PSU for every miner is an enormous waste of money and space.

Also, I received this from Canaan this evening:

I don't believe you will be able to buy any new 741s as they are EOL and it seems the 761s just replaced the 41s
