I am not too worried about this. Since they said they were putting out a patch for all windows machines from Microsoft to quell any doubts about what is safe and which are not.

I received an update last night and it installed and I am certain that my machine is protected.

Is there a drop in performance after the update? They say there is a 30% drop once the update is installed, it is the primary reason why I am reluctant to do it on my already slow laptop which is running Windows 7.

Maybe Intel should recall all defective CPUs and replace them with a new one.

I think this performance drop is not fixed percentage. What I understood know is 2% to up to 30% but not sure what are the machines fall under that maximum performance drop criteria. If performance drop then machines under warranty then we should ask for replacement of machines because it is not to end users fault.

Since all Intel CPUs made since the Pentium I believe are all affected, that's highly unlikely. The performance hit is on syscalls (file system read/writes, things like that), so the performance hit will be different for certain applications based on how the application operates.

Yikes! This is a gambling thread but it seems everybody is talking about computer processors in this thread.

It would be best not to talk about off-topic things in these threads, it makes them messy.

To conclude these Specture and Meltdown attacks, they are mostly issues if you keep your content on a shared/virtual machine like with AWS/Google cloud. For the end user, an antivirus software should be sufficient.

all of the hardware wallets are unaffected by any type of a CPU related attack
simply because they do not have a cpu crystal first place
it is good that Yolodice (as,most likely, the majority of the gambling sites)
keep the  funds in hardware wallets,so the cold storage is not going to be in any danger
what concerns me if the servers are attacked and the server seed is leeked, not sure if this scenario is probable
but nonetheless,is Yolodice prepared for such an attack?

Regarding recently disclosed CPU vulnerabilities - not data can leak out of our servers. We use virtualized servers provided by AWS and they made it clear their infrastructure prevents cross-client data leak.

I am much less worried about cross-process data leak because 1. malicious software would need to actively attack the CPU cache, 2. but it would first need to get to our instances first. So there is no emergency here, we'll be updating our server software anyway, but I do not see any real threat for us.

@veleten: we keep most of the funds in off-line wallets, but the kind of attack you describe is something we are trying to protect against.

First, we protect our servers with several security layers and there are only two persons (me and Scott) that have access to them. Now, if you read about the most famous cryptocurrency-related security breaches you can easily find out most were either inside-jobs or human-related issues. With two people onboard the risk of an "insider job" is much, much smaller.

Second, we actively monitor activity on our servers. If anything suspicious happened (a break-in attempt), we'd be alerted.

Third, cold wallets. One cannot just steal a seed, win big, withdraw and disappear. Having funds in cold wallet gives us enough time to act accordingly if the win was a result of seed leak.

Honestly I trust our system. I keep my Bitcoin savings at YOLOdice and I think they are safere there than on my PC.

Cheers,
Ethan

ethan_nx, have you tried the Lightning Network test net? Would it be something Yolodice would start using when it is released? I received some feedback from Bustadice that they have been "playing" with Lightning and that they are "optimistic" in what they see.

Plus with your Segwit readiness, you are one of the first candidates to use Lightning. I believe you are in a good position to use the new infrastructure.

LTC will be added on 15th January

Good news everyone! We are adding Litecoin to YOLOdice this Monday. We'll take YD off-line for an hour or so, it will come back with support for LTC. You will be able to deposit, withdraw, play, send tips, claim rakeback, claim referral bonuses and get faucet in LTC in addition to BTC!

I know a lot of you have been waiting for LTC to be added, so I am glad it's so close now. Hopefully the small transaction fees and fast confirmations are also something worth waiting for!

There will also be a special competition on to give LTC a kick-start, stay tuned!

After that we'll be working on adding other coins too - if you have any suggestions, let us know!

I will keep you informed!

The more altcoins you add to the site you can increase your site traffic more and more for sure because many people will be mining many altcoins but they may not be interested in exchanging before start gambling those coins. So you can consider slowly to add as many as all top coins to the site.

Hi,

1. LTC and BTC faucet are separate, but as for now you will only be able to claim faucet if your account balances are 0. So you cannot claim LTC if you have BTC and vice versa.

2. For now we (me and Scott) will be providing the funds for the bankroll ourselves. We might open LTC investments to everyone later on, but I cannot say when right now. Let's just make sure LTC works as expected.

3. Rakeback and referral bonuses will be available in LTC. Rakeback and referral LTC balances will be calculated separately from the BTC balances. If you wager BTC you can claim BTC rakeback, if your referrals wagered some LTC, you can claim LTC as your referral bonus.

Cheers,
Ethan

Good to know that everything will be separate as some were saying they would be interchangeable within the site.
Which I can not see that happening, as that would require a total over haul on the wallet of bitcoin's side with the amount of work you and scott have put in so far, I could not see that happening.
Also before the Jan 15th launch date of litecoin,
can you say how much the withdrawal fees would cost to send off the ltc casino wallet?

Thanks.

While of course I can't speak for Ethan, I would be very surprised if they weren't small. LTC's average transaction fee currently seems to be less than $0.30 USD.

I think most of the gambling sites work this way and they don't allow to claim faucet money if they got money in any of their altcoin balances. Faucet money is only to try these games so if they already have coins in other balances then shouldn't allow claiming money otherwise people misuse the faucet money.

litecoins are awesome to gamble with because of the low transaction fees requirements
usually the fee is in the range of 20k-60k litoshi ( 0.0002-0.0006 ltc) which is very cheap, way below 0.5$
it confirms much faster than bitcoins, too
the only snag is that there could be many newbies playing low stake martingale with 1-2 litoshis
slowing the servers down, but I'm sure Ethan is going to sort it out if that to happen
