Another theory is that its just a fake steampunk sort of thing. Can the great hive mind of the Wall rescue me from this predicament?

Leather, brass, obsequious mechanical design, apparently useless? I think you pegged it.

"Vintage look" but 2018 year? Yup.

It's a knock-off of an opera glass (monocular) from a bygone era.  Not useless but there are better options now though not so cool.  They were produced by King optical in the late 1800s.  I think this would pair nicely with V8s leather cloak.

Indeed, you are perfectly right, here's an original for sale. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Vintage-King-Optical-Co-Brass-Travel-Monocular/113651549009?hash=item1a76290351:g:e14AAOSwm79catye

what is this "brake pedal" you speak of?

Its all about the V8 sound brother Smiley (for me though)

Understood.  I have friends who feel the same way Smiley

Easily solved with a capable car stereo and suitable synthesis for engine sounds.

I mean, if that's the hill you want to die upon.

man youll need some serious power and subwoofers to reproduce the sound im used too. like, being able to set car alarms off when driving by.

because ive had cars that did that. and if youre gonna reproduce that true Detroit Big Iron sound youll want to do it right.

practically speaking though i would actually prefer the silence of electric cars.

Because it's fun and gives you goosebumps? That's why I did it once upon a time.

+1 WOsMerit

If it's their product why not just email them and ask?

There are no products at festival..only gifting.

in my mind, I had already concluded it isn't their product.  I can't say for sure but I imagine they purchased a reproduction of a late 1800's monocular and branded the case (literally) with the theme from their 2018 festival.  I can't believe the amount of time I've spent on this little piece of trivia.  I'm getting old; fortunately the aging brain benefits from distraction (I'll come back to that later).

Seriously though, good idea to email them but can somebody else do that please?  I have hats to make and the natives are getting restless... I see GreatArkansas is already sporting a less-expensive knockoff.  What the--?! SQUIRREL!!!! Gotta run.

+2 WOsMerits

Outstanding work my friend..thanks.

+2 WOsMerits

Thanks Arre..that antique from King Optical was exactly what I was looking for. I suspected it to be a modern knock off of something from days gone by but my googlefu was weak yesterday apparently. I just could not come up with the word monocular.

As for the item..it indeed was a gift from another camp last year. If none of you have ever been to Burning Man or some of the regional events like Critical Mass it is simply amazing. Highly recommended.

Appreciate all the leg work you guys put forward. Thanks again!
