Spent the last like 3 hours on this Biostar Racing z170GT7 but it's a no go.

It has 4 PCIex16 slots but it wasn't working but only on the first slot.

So I tried in slot #2, it didn't detect the card at all.

In slots # 3 and #4 it would just power cycle the board.

Super upsetting, was going to see if I could overheat it with 4 1080Ti's lol

Phil you're awesome!

I have some of those motherboards on the way, also I have a z170 with 4 PICEx16 - spacing is going to be tight for a 4 card 1080TI no riser but I'm going to run it just to see how long it can go. Should get here monday.

My new bottleneck - these stupid Corsair 750's only have 2... TWO! 4+4/6+1 power ports. The Rosewill 850w you suggested does have 4 PCIE power lines, so I just need  to get some more cables that have 2 sets of 6+2's in them, I ran out. I upgraded a dozen 1070's to 1080Ti's today - hardware always takes longer than you expect. Was expecting to unscrew, unplug, swap and be done. The power cords threw me for a huge loop.

I was thinking about running power from my 1500w EVGA but I actually don't have long enough cables for that either.

So back to the drawing board.

the gigabyte board will do 3  with no risers.   1080ti 1080 ti 1070 mini

here are two builds on the biostar z170
3 with no risers 1080ti 1080 ti 1070

Phil, appreciate all the effort and time you put in to share your knowledge.

Almost pulling the trigger on my first build, shopping list if you can see if I am forgetting anything:
-2x MSI 1080ti FE

-1x Zotac 1070 Mini   I have switched this out to thishttps://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137092

-1x EVGA 850w Gold
-1x Gigabyte GA-Z270P
-1x Intel G4400 Skylake
-1x Crucial 4GB DDR Ram
-1x ADATA 128GB SSD

Puts the tab around $2.1k from Newegg, little more than your parts list from another thread where you were at 1950 or so.

note the msi aero   is shorter then the zotac  I switched to it.

sounds defective.  Of the 10-13 I had 1 was defective.

I do not reccomend that board

over this one.  the gigabyte is newer z270 and  low cost  it runs  3 riserless and I have had 5 run on it with ease. using an i3 7100 t

My "new build" that I've got the parts for but haven't had the time to get to (moving is PAINFULL when you get to my age with as much stuff as I have to move) will use a minor varient on Phil's Gigabyte - the D vs the HD

Only differences seem to be "2 PS/2 type connectors" vs 1 + 2 USB, and my board has a D-Sub VGA port Phil's doesn't have.

I suspect they will work the same.

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!

Following fills lead, I have a few card options..

MSI 1080ti Founders Edition $699
Zotac 1080ti Founder Edition $699
MSI 1080ti Armor Overclocked $709
MSI 1080ti Aero Overclocked $699

Phil, this may be a stupid question, but is this the best bang for the buck hash and power wise?

How does this 3 card combo compare to a (5-7) 1070 card rig on riser?
I mean the cost boards, cpu, ram, hd, and psu all add up.

Thoughts?

Best bang for the buck  so very hard to determine .

I got the msi aero 1080 ti's at 597  not 699

So price has meaning.
I will sell all the 1080ti's here  as my  profit model has me selling cards at good discounts  due to what I earned in coins on them.

this size rig  with a smaller psu has value to me note this is the one with the short gigabyte 1070

Yes  with the 850 watt  rosewill quark  not the 750 watt psu's  unit pulls about 630 watts at the k-watt meter doining 3.1 to 3.3 gh for skein

and 1 riser the biostar z170 expands to 3x 1080 ti's  and 1 1070 .

@ vg54dett

I got my one 1060 3gb for  180 usd  and it did 300 sols for zec.   that is 1.667 sols for 1 dollar.
So if you have room , plenty of  cheap cooling, lots of risers on hand  and free power it is good.

It did 2.65 sols a watt

my builds of 2x 1080ti 1x 1070 do 3.8 to 4.1 sols a watt

I have heat and power cost issues so it is not a good fit for me.
I would need  50 of them to do 14000 sols of zec
I would spend  5600 watts.

but 50 x say 180 = 9000
say
9 mobos
psu's
cpus
risers
total                      2500

11500

and my  bigger rig of 3x 1080 ti + 1x 1070 = 2700 x 6 = 16,200

1060 3gb     vs     3x 1080ti + 1x 1070

 11,500       vs         16,200   build cost

14,000      vs           14,000  sols for zec

   5,600     vs            3,810    watts

9 rigs         vs              6 rigs

if you had free power and space  the 1060 3gb look okay

but   for resale  the  3x 1080 ti + 1x 1070 will sell well

So your 3 shelf rack could do six rigs with  3.1-3.3gh each?

Damn right  and use about 6 x 635 = 3810 watts to do 18gh of skein.  That is the goal for the winter not now.

or same power and 14000 of sols for zec.

last winter 6 racks x 4 cards  24 msi rx 480 8gb's
about 6 x 600 watts = 3600 watts but only  7200 sols of zec

the blower style  msi aero  is better then the  founder edition

if you get a deal on the  evga founder edition  they have top notch  rma service.

the gigabyte z270  can do  add-ons with  risers

I ran as many as five so far.  3 with the slots and 2 with risers.

I just two 15 dollar  coupons from ebay today
so I grabbed

two accounts one is mine one is the wifes
the mobo can do 3 riser less and in the winter I can add cards

this is a 200 dollar cpu for 130 six months to pay it. no payments or interest
It can be sold back for 150 easy on ebay and will not drop in price for around 2 years.
