if you are such noob in crypto space, the first thing i would recomend dont invest such big amount of money, make smaller investments in amount of 1000-2000.
Also it depends what kind of investor are you, if you are long term investor there are different options than short term investors.

$12000 is a big amount to invest but I would suggest you to invest 2000$ each in six coins so that your investment will be diversified. First of all do yourself some research of top 50 coins from coinmarketcap list then decide what is best for you. I have some good coins list you can check. You can consider  DeepOnion, Bitcoin, Waves, Stratis and Xmr. There is always risk in any investment. Invest that you can afford to loose.

I think you should make study before entering at the market so that you have an knowledge on what you are going to or what would you need to wait in cryptocurrency to earn a profit. You always split up your stacks and diversify. You have amount X you can use for investment, which would not hurt you to lose it if anything goes work. Now you split amount X to several assets, commodities and coins/tokens. a lot of new coins appear  every day on the market and also a lot news appears (positive and negative) also every day  which  influence on the token value that why it is very difficult to choose right object of investment. If I were you I would not invest money in the coins with big  capitalization, because probably they will not make some 2X  3x and so on

But investing in those coins will be far safer then investing in ICOs or cheap coins.
