You can find out whether Mycelium monitors or scans old addresses by generating a list of your addresses, choosing an old one and sending some coin to it.  See if it shows up in your balance.

If not, refresh your wallet.
Highlight (select) the account, go to the menu and click reload account.  It will then have to generate every address in the chain, including the one you sent some new coins to.  Maybe it will see the coins...anybody care to try it?

I would, but I only have 50 private keys in my oldest HD wallet and so I doubt any of my receiving addresses count as 'old'.
It doesn't have to be old old, just old meaning "former".
If you have fifty addresses in your wallet, plenty of them were used once, emptied of coins and never used again.  That's how an HD wallet works.
I suggested sending some coin to one of those " old" (empty) former addresses as an experiment.  You can find your used addresses by going into the menu where you sign messages, which brings up a list of all the addresses contained in your HD wallet.  Very few of those fifty addresses will have coin in them.  Most will be empty.
Another way to generate a list of addresses is by running this bip39 utility offline.
https://dcpos.github.io/bip39/

Unrelated to the subject of this post, but important nevertheless:
Right now, while confirmations are backed up and people are having trouble sending coins, it's a good idea to bump up your fee.  You can do this easily in Mycelium by tapping the miner fee button, which will change the fee from Normal to Priority.

Concerning old receiving addresses: Yes, they are still monitored for incoming transactions.

Concerning server problems:
Better version of the backend is in the works, till it is ready we try to keep the servers up as good as possible while the spam transactions cause severe load.
Sorry for the inconvenience, a more robust and efficient backend is being coded.

I haven't checked (and don't have time for it right now) but is the backend code somehow open source?
Would it be possible for someone who has a full node to run a mycelium backend for himself (and maybe some friends?)
I suppose there are trust issues, so connecting Mycelium to any random backend server might be not advisable, but for personal use it should be ok, and maybe some other trusted organizations would be willing to run Mycelium backends as well.

Mycelium server source code is not free software (as in freedom) and is not available. Also, Mycelium phone's source code is not free software too as per their license prohibits distribution of modified codes.

Not with every synchronization - but they for sure get checked when reloading the account.
But why on earth should anybody send money there?

Another way to generate a list of addresses is by running this bip39 utility offline.
https://dcpos.github.io/bip39/

I tried that, but it seems to only want to generate the addresses of the first HD wallet I ever created. I've since deleted that one.

On the Mycelium tab, 'BIP32 Derivation Path' seems hardcoded to m/44'/0'/0'/0

I figure I need to change one of those 0's to a bigger number to get the addresses for the wallet I'm currently using. I didn't realise I could use the BIP44 tab to edit those numbers individually, so got lost making a fork of the page where you can edit the derivation path on the mycelium tab. But all I needed to go was use the BIP44 tab and change the 'account' from 0 to 1 to see my receiving addresses.

I found that if I used m/44'/0'/1' as the derivation path then the displayed "BIP32 Extended Key" and "BIP32 Extended Key (addresses only)" in the mycelium tab of the bip39 web page match the keys I see in mycelium when I export my wallet. But the addresses it generates with that derivation path aren't right. In order to get the correct address list I have to use m/44'/0'/1'/0 as the derivation path (ie. with the /0 on the end).

My wallet contains 49 private keys according to the accounts tab of mycelium, but only addresses 0 through 17 have been used. I guess the other 31 must be change addresses.

I tried m/44'/0'/1'/1 as a derivation path and saw a list of my change addresses. 0 through 29 have been used. So that's 30 change addresses and 18 receiving addresses that have been used, and I guess one extra receiving address has been displayed but not used, making the displayed total of 49.

I sent some coins to the first receiving address in the list, hit the 2-arrows-in-a-circle icon, and the deposit showed up. So it does look back through at least 17 old receiving addresses.

Very true, no one's likely to do that.
How about if somebody sends btc to an old receiving address, and some, but not all, of that coin gets sent out in the subsequent transaction.  Where does the change go?

You're supposed to type in the mnemonic for the wallet you want to generate.  Isn't that what you're doing?

New change goes to new change addresses.

When you make multiple HD wallets in Mycellium, they all have the same mnemonic.

If you go to the 'Mycellium Wallet' tab at https://dcpos.github.io/bip39/, it will only list the addresses of the first HD wallet you created. And only the receiving addresses (not the change addresses). However, if you go to the BIP44 tab at the same page, you can set the "Account" (0 for the first wallet you created, 1 for the 2nd, etc.) and the "Internal / External" (0 for receiving addresses, 1 for change addresses).

I made https://dooglus.github.io/bip39/ which lets you edit the derivation path in the Mycellium Wallet tab. I didn't know about the BIP44 tab when I made that fork, or I wouldn't have bothered.

https://dooglus.github.io/bip39/ will let you access it. It takes your 12 word backup and gives you your private keys for importing into a decentralised wallet.

Nope

I am talking about local trader. I was sat with a customrr who wanted 4btc.
To do this he had to get out his calculator and multiply my sell rate by 4. When he entered this ammount market price changed and he was only getting 3.98btc. The only option for the buyer using the local trader is the ammount in fiat he wishes to purchase, you cannot change to btc like you can with the normal wallet functions.

We ended up just doing a direct trade without uaing local trader as then the reciever could ent

In case anyone from Mycelium is reading here: please fix your servers

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3emb4j/help_mycelium_didnt_receive_my_transaction/
Thanks, this is a known problem and work is underway to rectify it.  (I'm a Mycelium dev, but am not involved with the wallet myself.)
