@everyone Whitefire990 statement regarding the Xilinx 1525 modification and thermal management: difficult to over clock:  1. You need to use a DC1613A PMBus dongle with a custom cable adapter to plug into the VCU1525 PCB and reprogram the current limits and core voltage.  2. You need to disassemble the VCU1525 and modify the cooling system, which means you need to use ESD protection straps and use a heat gun to soften the thermal paste on the FPGA and you still risk breaking the BGA solder joints and ruining your card.  That's why the VCU1525 is hard to overclock.  The software allows you to immediately run it at any speed up to 900MHz but without the above mods it won't work.
Quote
@everyone   Bittware is looking to develop a mining optimized VU9P board with water cooling and higher power capacity than the VCU1525, which converts to significantly higher overclocking speeds.  The VCU1525 is very difficult to overclock (it can be done but it takes technical expertise and it runs really hot 100-105C).  With the VCU1525 now being $5K and the Bittware board at $5895, this is something to strongly consider if you are looking to get into FPGA mining.   Although I own 9 x VCU1525, my next rig will be made up of the water cooled Bittware cards.  Just FYI.
It’s from discord.
If I understand correctly, the Board 1525 without modification will not be ready to work with software mining.
Any commentary?

#1) The VCU1525 is equivalent to what I've been using to mine on amazon for almost a year. You can use about 85% of the logic before power becomes a significant problem.

#2) These are FPGA, not GPUs. You don't want to overclock it.

#3) On FPGA, the cooler they are, the better they operate. You should really put them in a proper datacenter. I would not recommend putting them in your typical 'mining warehouse barn' with the chickens and roosters.

-- I'm honestly not sure if whitefire is just trying to make money for bittware or what the deal is. He's really trying to push their overpriced cards.

-- We will be doing a gen 2 card based on the vcu1525 with an additional 8 pin PCI-E power input. HOWEVER, it will take months of design, evaluation, testing, etc before it's ready for sales. For right now, we can do the VCU1525 which we know will work for mining, we know what the maximum logic utilization for power, and we know what pricing we can give them to you at. (about 20% under avnet and 33% under bittware). What this all really comes down to is performance to cost. If you want to spend an extra $2,000 for the same chip just so you can have a watercooler on it (something you could do with the vcu1525).... have at it...

Edit:

-- And bittware is only going to give you a 90 day warranty anyway.. I'm sure that warranty would be void if you're running at a modified / increased voltage (overclocking). So, you really are paying +$2000 for a waterblock. Am I the only one out there who thinks that's crazy? Maybe it's just because I'm one of the few who know true chip pricing.

what is this "brake pedal" you speak of?

from what i understand (a very limited amount i assure you) the fpga chip itself has no inbuilt thermal throttling to limit it from overheating, temperature sensing needs to be part of the bitstream (i am unclear on this) or depend on software to monitor the boards various other sensors like voltage and current limits and such. so its very easy to destroy the chip if proper cooling and monitoring are ignored.

Count me in if we get enough volume; quantity will depend on pricing and progress with the devs for the wares, as I am too much of a novice to program them myself (currently, anyway). As such, also happy to pay dev fees or donations.

So what kind of lead time are we talking about before shipping? It’s going to be pretty hard to cover the $25-$30k investment for TOO long before I would need to start turning them on! We talking 1-3 months or longer?

And what about the bitstreams? Is Whitefire the only source at the moment? Does anyone know where we could get bitstreams from other sources? Of course for a fee!

I’m willing to provide bitstreams as well, or in collaboration.

Unknown at this point, it should be pretty quick once production / supply chains are established (<2 months -- i would say best case 2 weeks and more likely around 4-6 weeks.)

no interest in selling your miner or dev services?

also is that normal to have the intro pricing then jack it up, whitefire also says its $4k now but 5k + next month

Count me in, I'm ready to be a guinea pig.

The VCU1525 schematics and bom are available for anyone to produce. I have already sat down with Xilinx (in Shenzhen) and negotiated chip pricing. If there is enough interest, I could facilitate a chip purchase, put the chips on boards and deliver them at a regular price of $4,000-$4,500. To hit a $4,000-$4,500 and stay at $4,000-$4,500 there would need to be at least 1,000 boards sold. If order volume went up to or over 10,000 units pricing could be dropped to $3,000-$3,500 per unit.

You would be able to use the device with the firmwares produced by whitefire990

Any interest?

Payment methods would be Crypto (obviously) and Credit Card / Paypal (identity verification would be required and shipping to your registered / verified address)

UPDATES:

The community seems to be uneasy that there is only one developer announcing they will be providing firmware for the VCU1525. We are considering building a 'shell' framework (like the AWS shell) that would allow any FPGA developer to compile encrypted code for our boards. We would provide a development environment (vivado) to the dev, provide the mining software, communication interface and facilitate fee collection on the devs behalf. If there are any FPGA developers who would be interested in building firmwares to be released to the community please contact me.

Will you be shipping to Canada?  I live on the border and would rather have items like this shipped to a company in the US and then pick them up from there.  Would this be possible at all?

I'm working on EU manuf to deal with the VAT issues. It's not going to be a problem for me to ship worldwide. I shipped a couple of FPGA boards recently internationally. The requirements weren't what I was expecting. But, for EU customers, I'd like to ship from the EU.

No algos are available yet. I believe whitefire will release his first one on 5/30. You'll have to check his thread.

Do you have a rough idea of what the total cost of one unit would be once you have your EU channel ready?

Not currently. I don't have enough knowledge of EU vat to say for sure.

I'm saying that he's paying $2000 more getting the bittware board just to get a waterblock.
