Those 0.1 coins with the new hologram look awesome! Too bad they're going for 4x the price.

Companies claiming they got hacked and lost your coins sounds like fraud so perfect it could be called fashionable. I never believe them. If I ever experience the misfortune of a real intrusion, I declare I have been honest about the way I have managed the keys in Casascius Coins. I maintain no ability to recover or reproduce the keys, not even under limitless duress or total intrusion. Remember that trusting strangers with your coins without any recourse is, as a matter of principle, not a best practice. Don't keep coins online. Use paper or hardware wallets instead.

You can enter the prefix you see on the outside of the coin here, or on blockchain. It will confirm the number of BTC you paid for are loaded on the address contained on the back of the hologram.

Mike publishes a pgp-signed list of all addresses he's ever used: https://www.casascius.com/faq.aspxSo, if you have a "Casascius" coin with an address that does NOT appear on that list, it's a counterfeit. If the address IS on that list, you can rest assured that it was produced by Casascius (though you should still *always* check the balance to make sure it hasn't been redeemed). As Chainsaw pointed out above, it's easy to punch the first few characters of your coin's address into a lookup tool to verify these things.

As Chainsaw pointed out above, it's easy to punch the first few characters of your coin's address into a lookup tool to verify these things. It's possible that a counterfeiter could vanity-generate everything to be collisions of the first 8 characters to coincide with my list, or simply just rip prefixes off my list (nothing holds a counterfeiter to actually funding the coins). Though, judging by the stickers, this particular counterfeiter did not choose to do this. My list is thorough and complete though, it's safe to say that if you have a "Casascius" coin and can't find the prefix on my list, then it's not genuine.

Yeah, I was just going to say, counterfeits will have the same numbers as actual physical coins. Just like fake dollar bills have the same serial numbers as real ones. They can sell the same coin to 20 people for the face value, and none of them can or will redeem the private key.

I think nightowlace has an offering of each right now. You could also check the collectible marketplace (link in signature). I'll be getting some in soon.
Acquisition price plays a huge role in resale price. What you consider a reasonable price as a buyer might differ from what a seller considers a reasonable price. This becomes especially true once coins hit the aftermarket. Buyers do not buy casascius coins with USD, they buy them with Bitcoins. We tend to be reluctant to sell things at a loss. I believe that's why you see sales dry up, temporarily, during price run-ups. Then when prices level, we re-learn that the premiums remain in BTC terms. This was proven during the run-up from $5 to the $100s, when the 10 BTC coins sold for 30+ BTC with BTC spot in the $100s, and again when Goat sold his 1000 BTC coin for 1250 with BTC at $800.
Especially for the 0.1 BTC coins, this plays a huge factor. These coins had a 450% markup, the most of any casascius offering I can recall, for most of their offered time. 9 BTC for 2.0 in spot value. At the tail end, a few people were able to get theirs for 4.xx BTC for 20.
Right now, with prices surging, you'll hear a lot of crickets, both on the buying and selling end.
This is a speculative guess, but the collectors that bought at the tail-end might be willing to sell theirs for that 2-3x markup. Once they're gone, I'd anticipate willing sellers to dry up. Most of the purchased coins go to strong hands, investors, and those with a long term view.

Once you let him know that you have received the coin, he will send you a follow up email with the entire address of the coin and let you know it was funded. He is most likely behind/busy, but I am sure he will get to it soon.

I await ATM machine for Bitcoins, i will start the project if it does not come up by Mid 2014, the more reason i love bitcoin so much is all about its transparency..
Its the future and i use it proudly and all i do hope is that the government just allow its users world wide the freedom of using it, banking with it..
ATM mode in progress, together we move the world forward to the better place with bitcoins...

I checked geoffreyqp's coins and they were marked correctly in the CBA database. You must wait at least a day after being funded for the scanner to update the coins address.

That news is frightening, however it makes all Casascius coins even more valuable than before More valuable, but I will never own a gold casascius if mike cannot continue his job Good luke Mike, maybe you should come in france or any other country that let you stick numbers on a token indeed... Happy for the valuation of the coins, but very very sad because a great project died I want a gold casascius too! Is it an option to sell just commemorative coins and send the empy holograms with it and we fund the coin? People can always check in the blockchain if the coin is funded before they buy one. As long as the holograms is intact, there should not be a problem...
