Just wondering, when the name changes will Evan still have the rights or whatever to the Darkcoin name? I just saw someone posted in this Darkcoin clone thread that the Darkcoin name will be available soon. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=976153.280

Ah, new coke, what could go wrong.
Really people the name DARK isn't holding back Darkcoin. WTF.
It's not like it is called murdercoin, F*ckHerRightInTheP**syCoin.
DarkCoin is a rated G name. No one cares.
I did a case study on the old coke vs. new coke disaster. The issue was that the marketing around Coke since the 1950s was so good that people associated the brand with their youth. A change to the formula was like changing their past. Nothing to do with the actual taste of Coke. Most people that complained hadn't even tasted the new formula.

I think instead of changing the name one needs to come up with a cute or clever meaning for DARK and instill that rather than a whole new name.
Get some marketing gurus to 'coin' something out of DARK e.g. Digital Asset Recovery [?] coin I fear you will spend more time referring to the new name as the formally known as coin.

lol not quite.
I was going to use Digital Asset Recovery Koin but then you're left with the dangling coin at the end. So think of something clever(er) to make out of the K in Darkcoin.

Actually I think the answer is right there. Keep DRK and Darkcoin for commercial semi-commercial other usage, and just rebrand or spin off the same thing for consumer usage and call it InstantX with the symbol ITX. Same way car manufacturers have identical vehicles in different markets with different names.

According to Evan, he purchased the rights to the name from the Dashcoin team. Now, it's a process of contesting trademarks to see whether it is even viable as a naming option. The coin name appended to the end is going.

Xposting from DCT:
I have one last thing to say, the main argument I have heard against Dash is that it is a bland name. I think the people that feel this way are completely missing the point. We should with go with DASH precisely because it is a bland name, so we can build a strong brand out of it. Name != Brand
The problem with Darkcoin as a name is precisely that it is too explicit the name suggests a meaning and detracts from the brand, when the project adds other aspects to it that are not the ones explicitly described by the name. Take important examples in crypto: Circle and Square. They can be developed into great brands in crypto because the names do not suggest any meaning so in the crypto context Circle and Square just acquire the ideals associated with those companies. I am sure if Evan came up with the name Triangle people would be going crazy.
Another good example is Apple, some people might say, but Apple is a huge company, again missing the point. When Apple was back at the garage and Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs decided to call their new company like the fruit, apple was not yet Apple. Meaning the ideals, you have learn to associate with that brand, great design, user friendliness, good quality, were not present back at the garage, it was just a "bland" name. This property of blandness allowed it to develop into a brand.
Also, the "blandness" of the name, I really see it as flexibility of the brand and it is very important. You have to be capable of abstract thinking and projecting yourself into the future, back when Steve Jobs named Apple, apple, he was only thinking about computers not iPods, iPhones or iPads. Fortunately, their brand is flexible enough. Back when Evan named Darkcoin, darkcoin, he was not thinking about InstantX, scalability or decentralized applications and services that is why we need to change, we need something more flexible as we don't know what will come later.
Same thing applies to Dash, if Circle and Square work, Dash can work too, and if we work very hard, one day people will associate, privacy, freedom, transparency, great technology, decentralization with our brand. Brands take time and hard work to develop, so instead of fighting about a perfectly good name, we should think of ways we can project ideals that reflect the true essence of our project into our new brand. Dash will be great, in time.
BUMP Guys before you get all too carried away with trying to work out words that would fit to make an acronym of DARK I think you should read this post from Minotaur from a dozen or so pages back. He's really nailed the essence of what the renaming is for and how to think about it. Trying to re-use DARK and have it fit within some new hybrid name somehow is fraught with all sorts of problems. Honestly, try to expand your minds out beyond what everyone's thought Darkcoin has been about all this time. This project is way bigger and way more important than "an anonymous crypto-currency". With the capabilities that have been built and now Evan's tackling of Bitcoin's 7 transactions per second limitation, this is going to scale far beyond what most people are thinking Bitcoin will achieve. The branding is all important and historical references to Dark (whilst perfectly understandable from within the crypto sphere) just aren't going to help when one starts considering where this is going and how monumental it's likely to be at a mainstream level where anything "dark" is completely unacceptable.

If there is sufficient interest, we plan on running a line of physical Darkcoins. Mock-ups should be available in the coming days but we are actively taking pre-orders now. For further detail: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=985983.0

Dash is 27.3 times faster with syncing and updating than Bitcoin and 93.7 times faster than Monero. Bitcoin (v0.11.0) has a Tao ratio 11.2% faster than bitcoin (v0.10.0) release. Dash (v.0.12.0.49) = Tao sync ratio = 0.15 seconds / hour of update || Dash (v.0.11.2.23) = Tao sync ratio = 0.24 seconds / hour of update. V12 versus V11 speedup = +36.5% Bitcoin (v.0.11.0) = Tao sync ratio = 4.14 seconds / hour of update || Monero (v.0.41.1) = Tao sync ratio = 14.2 seconds / hour of update

I don't agree with anything stated in that Xposting from DCT.
The word "dash" is simply not serious enough. It is too whimsical, "flighty" flitty" however you want to describe it. More suited to the DODGE coin community. First thing that comes to mind is Santa Clause's reindeer when hearing the word, second thing that comes to mind is a Russian word. Dashcoin invoked a picture of Santa Clause flying over roof tops with his reinders. Or sinister old world Russia.
That's just me obviously. A technically solid one of a kind coin needs more bite to its name than "dash". That's akin to naming a 6x6 truck the "daffodil truck" or the "daisy truck". As for the idea bout squares and triangles, apples and ipods and all these cute and flighty type names, it is next to impossible to give something a goofy name and expect it to take off because of that. You can certainly try but if it fails there will be no second round. You might as well go for broke and go all the way with a "zingo" or "bongo" "zoomer" type goofiness that many try with very websites and company names on the internet, that go absolutely no where.
Put some real money to good use and retain an established marketing company to conduct a study and to actually run brand clinics to see how the general populous perceive different names, not rely on crypto nerds on internet forums for the answer.

We're rapidly approaching a time when the average person will have absolutely no comprehension on the difference between there, their and they're, its and it's, to, two and too, which and witch, accept and except, affect and effect, a lot and allot, bear and bare, illicit and elicit, let and let's, (and hundreds of others) nor care two hoots about any of it either. Pretty sad.
Since the subject finally came up, I just wanted to take the opportunity to quickly (and as inoffensively as possible) get this off my chest: You don't "loose" money. You "lose" money and "loose" an arrow (as in, "let loose"). Just reminding those around here with otherwise perfect English that this sticks out like a sore thumb because the rest of your text is so awesome. That's all I'm going to say about this, though. Given DASH's bright future, I'm sure nobody in this community will ever have to worry about this particular word again anyway. You got me Bridgewater! This is one that I confess to having a problem with. I'd like to think that it serves both to help keep me humble, (a difficult task) and keep others from taking me too (not to or two) seriously; (a much less difficult one).
