I used to start it in my home directory like so:  darkcoind -daemon and it would be the last version I downloaded to that directory.  But then, I couldn't figure out why when I downloaded the latest file and started it, I would get the old file starting up. ...

ok, I'm going to do it like you.

Thanks a lot for the description - has helped me understand what's going on now.

P.S. One last thing - is the relevant darkcoin.conf always the one in the same directory as the executable ?

i.e.

/usr/bin/darkoind ---> /usr/bin/darkcoin.conf

and

~/.darkcoin/darkcoind --> ~/.darkcoin/darkcoin.conf

No, under user home directory. ~/.darkcoin/darkcoin.conf

Use two option to change default conf and datadir.
(When default value is changed, you have to specify darkcoin -conf or -datadir,
otherwise darkcoind will search ~/.darkcoin/darkcoin.conf and  ~/.darkcoin/)
  -conf=<file>           Specify configuration file (default: darkcoin.conf)
  -datadir=<dir>         Specify data directory

What does this mean for alt-coins?
According to the Pantera Capital website, the firm also has their eyes on other digital currencies outside of Bitcoin [4]. While this isn’t the first case of venture capital funds taking notice of alt-coins, it certainly is an interesting distinction to note because alt-coins have largely been neglected by traditional investors (and often companies already in the Bitcoin space). With the spectacular rise of coins like Darkcoin, perhaps the alt-coin economy has caught the attention of large Bitcoin speculators.

...all the way to the Darkbank Grin

I wonder if Evan will let us know when (or if) hedge funds meet with him to perform their fiduciary due diligence. No hedge fund manager would take on a sizable position made up of other people's money without first vetting the developer. Also, I'm suspecting hedge fund attention will possibly perk up following successful and secure MN launch however the move to open source will likely garner the largest attention.

Hmm... and if they had to invest in Bitcoins, how would they meet Satoshi? Cool

No HTTPS yet, so don't enter personal info, like I just did.  Blah, hope it's all ok and I can trust you all, LOL.

I'm trying to set up a local wallet + remote wallet masternode configuration. My local machine is a windows pc, and when I finally get to the point where I can type "masternode start mypassword" I get the following error:

inbound port is not open. Please open it and try again. (19999 for testnet and 9999 for mainnet)

Question: do I have to have port 9999 open in the local wallet as well?

This is my local .conf:
addnode=23.23.186.131
masternode=1
masternodeaddr=REMOTE_IP:9999
masternodeprivkey=***

And this is the remote .conf:
addnode=23.23.186.131
listen=1
masternode=1
maxconnections=256
masternodeprivkey=***

Don't be too excited, I put all my info in and then realized too late that it was only demo and there is no security yet ;P  Least I made up a new password not used anywhere else (whew!)  LOL

Still... I need to be more careful.  I just decided a while ago that I would trust this when it was first announced in order to support what I think will be one of the most important things to come to the crypto world Cheesy. Please don't let us down, give it excellent security please!
