Mintpal very strange trading today for darkcoin.

Thats what I was thinking.

Its not that I was expecting any significant activity as a result of opensource but its this low volume decline that is unsettling.

I thought Dark is an Litecoin 0.6 fork, which has no full MS-support, as in all the MS-features we know from Bitcoin today. The ones introduced with Bitcoin 0.8.

I dont know. Maybe I am wrong, maybe not (in the sense that Dark only have this broken/minor MS-support from Litecoin 0.6.), maybe something in the middle.
Doesnt matter. What I am trying to say, DarkCoin needs major, sophisticated and easy-to-use Multi-Sig-Escrow support, then its ready to go for the DarkNet future.

Did you check this?

Found something quite interesting a couple of hours ago. X11 miners looking for the best GPU performance are likely familiar with badman74's SGMiner and the keccak-unroll setting he added. I figured out a while ago that setting that to anything other than 0 on any AMD GPU - at least, any 7xxx and up - except Tahiti-based cards (7950, 7970, 280X) would lower performance. Oddly, only Tahiti chips performed better with the loop partially unrolled, rather than fully unrolled. This behavior stayed the same whether I used the lib SPH implementation of Keccak-512, or my rewrite. I got an idea and decided to fiddle with my implementation some more, earlier, and as it turns out, there is something that Tahiti really doesn't seem to like in the SGMiner implementations, as well as in my own, up until a couple hours ago. With a few edits, Tahiti not only tolerates a full unroll of the main Keccak loop - it hashes faster than it did before the edit, using the partial unroll! I also tested this on a 270X and 290X - and predictably, nothing changed. Handy, though - speeds up X11 on all 7950s, 7970s, 280s, and 280Xs at least, I would think.

Impressive...

A few moments outside of this DRK world we've all become so comfortable with and you realise just how little understanding there is of Bitcoin's major flaw.

This is longish - please bear with me.

Yesterday Circle announced a global launch of a new BTC banking platform. It appeared in the Press section at bitcointalk and got strong endorsement from the first few commenters. I was intrigued enough to check whether Circle had found a way to avoid the Draconian measures used by Coinbase - measures to apply American laws or requirements to international customers in order to appease their government enough to hold a license. I was astonished to find the Circle requirements are far more arbitrary and restrictive than those of Coinbase. A trend is emerging, which I paraphrase as:

Buy your BTC (the currency of the future) from us. We will track how you use it - forever - and if we do not like how you use it we will snitch to our Secret Police, regardless of where in the world you live, and we will cancel your account. Here is a long list of things we do not like, many of them perfectly legal in all jurisdictions. We will add more to the list from time to time, should we feel inclined to or if we are coerced into doing so.

I posted the relevant Circle Terms Section in the Press thread and, so far, nobody has batted an eye. I am not sure what to make of that aspect.

Anyway, what struck me throughout all this is that the problem is perfect for DRK to solve, but hardly anyone knows about the problem yet, let alone the solution.

Here is the actual wording from the international (not American) terms at the Circle site. I have added bolding:

-- snip --

17. Restricted Activities

Using the Services to make the following types of payments is prohibited, and Circle reserves the right to monitor for payments that relate to:

    any Restricted Persons or persons or entities located in Restricted Territories (as each term is defined in Section 29);
    weapons of any kind, including but not limited to firearms, ammunition, knives, or related accessories;
    controlled substances including but not limited to narcotics, prescription drugs, steroids, or related paraphernalia or accessories;
    gambling activities including but not limited to sports betting, casino games, horse racing, dog racing, lotteries, games of chance, sweepstakes, games of skill that may be classified as gambling (i.e. poker), or other activities that facilitate any of the foregoing;
    constitute money-laundering or terrorist financing;
    any sort of ponzi scheme, pyramid scheme, or multi-level marketing program;
    goods or services that infringe or violate any copyright, trademark, or proprietary rights under the laws of any jurisdiction otherwise constitute counterfeit goods;
    debt settlement, refinance, or credit repair services;
    court ordered payments, structured settlements, tax payments, or tax settlements;
    the sale of money orders or cashier’s checks or any unlicensed money transmitter activity;
    lottery contracts, layaway systems, or annuities;
    counterfeit goods; or
    any other matters which we communicate to you that are unacceptable from time to time and which, for example, may be restricted by our and your payment partners.

In the event that Circle learns that you are making any such prohibited payments, Circle may suspend or terminate your Circle Account.

-- End Snip --

This cries out for a meme along the lines of: They will encircle you unless you use DRK! Disclosure: I have mined BTC since 2011. I very much want it to succeed, but there is a choke point where fiat and BTC meet that is being increasingly exploited. Perfect opportunity for DRK marketing, imho.

The problem I see for merchants accepting BTC then DRK, will they also attempt to apply the same choke points to DRK?

How are they going to prove it?

Yes - they will throw the book at DRK - every dirty trick they know, sooner or later. FUD in forums is just an early skirmish. The ultimate answer perhaps is to leave fiat out of all transactions but we are still a long way from that. As for proof - there is no requirement of proof in these situations. All they have to do is suspect, rightly or wrongly. They close an account and thus throw the burden of proof onto the customer who might want the account restored.

Turning a blind eye to this issue is not without logic. It is without merit, but not logic.

The number one goal ever since the genesis block has been mass adoption.

With so many people invested in BTC, they want adoption to increase the value of their holdings. If that comes at the cost of personal freedoms, then that is the price to pay.

I'm actually fine with this logic. Critical mass is, critical. Once you have it, privacy groups and lawyers will come out of the woodwork. Provided that Darkcoin proceeds at a slow and steady pace of answering all the privacy issues, it is but a name change away from being adopted by the masses and those that would have invested significantly in BTC solutions.

edit

I guess the trick for the savvy is to understand these coming threats for BTC and opportunities for DRK, and be invested in BTC and DRK  Wink

Harpoon Spectre, author of the internationally claimed daytrader's bible ("Rape Yourself!" - ISBN-13: 978-0982667132) was going to do a follow up called "Ten Million Guns To The Head - Racketeering For The Fuller Figure" but realised he was about a thousand years behind the Reptile Curve.

This IS the ultimate solution to everything. And in a few decades we need to arrive there. There can't be any other final goal than total avoidance of fiat money.
I wonder how I can convince my landlord to accept cryptocurrencies...

Remember folks, it's not your money, it belongs to your guvernators, you can only spend it how they like.
Very well put... people who realize that, can't help but feel like slaves from then on, until they start using their own money (like bitcoin, darkcoin, etc..)
But even if you use your own money, the rest of the world is still in slave mode and doesn't even realize it.
So, realization is key.

17. Restricted Activities

Ridiculous list.

Just a matter of time until they add "cryptocurrency exchanges" and "mixers" to the list, and demand that the BTC stays BTC to enable easy tracking.
