Ok assuming that my computer is safe, virus free etc. and I have the .wallet file and exported the private keys,
will the multibit classic client itself be functioning normally after the hard fork?

Multibit classic isn't really functioning "normally" now to be honest... it isn't supported, it isn't maintained... there are instances of people having wallets that won't unlock...  I think the hard fork is the least of your worries

Having your private keys exported and backed up somewhere is a step in the right direction. You'll be able to import them to whatever client you want to, whenever you want or need to.

Encrypted with a password that you know? It's better to export them encrypted in that case because on plain text, anyone can open the file and take your bitcoins. It's worth mentioning that Its better to move to another wallet like Electrum (If you are using Multibit Classic because Its no longer being supported by the team or getting updates)

That really depends on what you want to do with the exported keys... if you're just wanting to back them up... then encrypted would definitely be the best option. If you're wanting to import them elsewhere, then having them encrypted will be problematic, as most other wallets will be unable to import the encrypted file. In fact, a lot of wallets will probably fail to import the unencrypted file as well as it isn't really in a "standard" format... as there aren't any standards! But at least you're be able to open the file in a text editor and copy/paste the keys as required to import

What will happen to multibit classic if bitcoin hard forks? My understanding is that (because multibit does not get updated) only one of the 2 chains will show on multibit.
So I need the private keys to be readable from another wallet in case a hard fork occurs.
Yes I know having plain text private keys is risky, but are the multibit-encrypted private keys importable to another wallet? Or should I decrypt them first according to the above instructions posted?

I don't think there will be a fork, but if there is one wait until after it, then decrypt your private keys and import them into another wallet.

However, multibit classic isn't being developed anymore, so it's advisable to switch to a different wallet even if there isn't a fork.

This is correct. MBC (MultiBit Classic) is not likely to receive any updates. It is effectively "end of life" and no longer maintained at all.

That's fine, but MBC isn't going to magically stop running and/or not allow you to export your keys if there is a fork. You will still be able to open up MBC and export your private keys in the event of a fork. It will just not be able to deal with both chains.

The encrypted keys are not importable into any other wallets that I am aware of. None of the wallets really support importing encrypted stuff. This is mostly due to there being no real standard for exporting of encrypted keys. Wallets that do this are free to encrypt in any way they like, so it is somewhat unreasonable to expect any wallet to be able to read encrypted files generated by some other app.

If you feel you "must" export your keys now, I would highly recommend that you do so using encryption. It will make it less likely that your keys get compromised should you happen to have any unknown malware on your PC. Also, as already noted, there are tools and methods available to allow you to decrypt the file should you need to access them in the event of a fork.

I believe they gave you a video to restore your Multibit HD in Electrum because they are no longer developing the wallet. In a word, NO!

MultiBit is a very old, out dated and unsupported wallet... It also has/had no "buy/sell for fiat" capability...

You cannot deposit Canadian dollars into MultiBit.

Could I get some advice from you experts, please?

I have multibit 5.19 with still some Bitcoins on it. I used Multibit to send a part of that to an online service (in 2 transactions). Both transactions are stuck on "unconfirmed", have been for over 3 days now.

2 questions:

1) Is it a good idea to import the keys into another wallet and spend the bitcoins from there? (Knowing that there's still some unconfirmed transactions out there.)

2) Can I cancel the unconfirmed transactions? With a lot of Googling, I could not come up with a trustworthy way of doing that.
