You mean receiving addresses, right? For every address there will be a private key (safely stored inside the wallet file, you usually don't need to see the keys, you just need to know that they are there and that you should have backups to avoid losing them). Every Bitcoin address is derived from its own private key, if you have the key you can calculate the address from it (thats the reason why the .key file only contains keys and does not also the corresponding addresses, the addresses can be easily generated from the keys when you import it again). You cannot generate a key from the address, if you lose a key then you lose access to the bitcoins that are lying at that particular address. If you make backups of the .wallet (or of the .key files) you can't lose your keys. Please always password protect your wallet and the key export files. You can safely replace every occurrence of "generate a new address" with "generate a new key" and vice versa, it means the same thing. Under the hood a new key is generated (and stored in the wallet file) and from this its corresponding address is calculated and shown to you so you can use it to receive coins. You never see the key itself displayed in the user interface because you don't actually have any use from looking at it, only the wallet app needs it under the hood for its calculations when signing a bitcoin transaction. |

Hey, Im using 5.14 on my mac, Im missing 5btc. when I put my addresses on the blockchain as watch only, they showed up, and i looked at each address and the missing 5 also shows up there. Im nervous to upgrade it, should I just go ahead and do so? I have back up copies of the private keys, both in paper form and on a dongle. I noticed that multibits private addys dont start with a 5, so im assuming that I just can import them to blockchain..
Any help is appreciated... The missing 5 seemed to happen when the malleability issue was being talked about.

I recommend upgrading to 0.5.18 and then doing a reset blockchain.
There has been some work since 0.5.14 on the bloom filters and hence which tx are 'seen' so it is definitely work doing

A good way to answer your question is to look at the various risks involved in using MultiBit (or any other Bitcoin wallet) and seeing what is being done to avoid or remove them. There are two main risks in using Bitcoin: 1) You lose access to your private keys and hence cannot spend your bitcoin as you wish. You can pretty much avoid this by backups. MultiBit needs to be backed up every time you create new receiving addresses. A good backup plan is to keep copies of your wallets on two separate USB drives and keep them safe. 2) Someone steals your bitcoin. To do this they need to get your private keys. I recommend keeping your wallets encrypted always (except maybe for a 'pocket change' wallet). It's a big area this but the main things you can do to help is : + Always download MultiBit from https://multibit.org+ Keep your computer clean of viruses and malware. If you have large amounts of bitcoin then you want to consider an offline solution or multisig. MultiBit does not have offline signing yet (Trezor support is how we want to do this) so for offline signing you would want to use Electrum or Armory. For multisig there are a few wallets supporting this but you'd have to evaluate these for yourself. |

The reference to 'pocket change wallet' is this: Some people don't like having to enter a wallet password every time they want to spend even small amounts of coin; so they set up a non-encrypted wallet, in which they keep just a small amount of coin just for such small transactions. If the wallet in non-encrypted, MultiBut won't ask them to enter a password to spend the money. But, of course, that small-change wallet is not secured by encryption. Other folks might want to set up a non-encrypted 'canary wallet'. It's probably because your system treats the comma as a decimal separator, not the dot.

Hey jim618, Great work on the app! My favourite client to drag around on an encrypted USB drive  However, I have one teeny tiny thing that's been promised to be looked at, multiple times, in the past ~2 years. SOCKSv5 proxy. I'm using Tails as a daily OS, and MultiBit refuses to connect. But I can't set the proxy either. Previously, the main reason of not-yet-implemented status was that Bitcoinj did not support SOCKS proxy, only HTTP - recently, this changed, see here: https://bitcoinj.github.io/networkingCould we please have some proxy goodness in the close future?  |
