Haven't lost connectivity here in a long time.  Just webserver issues.

M

The route to stratum.mining.eligius.st which resolves to 54.225.179.121 or 107.20.237.226 or 54.243.41.185 depending which are all on the Amazon cloud are broken here for me and optimum online.

It's similar on cable. Now this *IS NOT* an Eligius issue it's a routing issue with the Amazon cloud. But @ the end of the day does it matter if I can't connect?

I am guessing that it's something with the peering here in the NYC data center but I can't be sure.

Theres non-amazon IPs in the rotation.  Your mining software will connect to another one eventually.

And what if I did have a need for my BTC0.5 that has been stuck there for 12+ hours?

I don't (and I don't leave that much in there anyway) but that's not the point. I LIKE the pool, I LIKE Luke and WK, they seem like good people. But over the last 6 weeks this has happened way to many times. I know 2 people with a combined 1.8 TH who left the pool because of this.  Difficulty is up and the pool hashrate is dropping because of things like this.

-Dave

To be frank, I don't get why so many here insist on treating mining like it's an ATM.  It's unrealistic and shows a drastic lack of understanding of the mining business.  You're engaged in a speculative venture, there are no guarantees.

Hell, even real (physical) miners have to deal with variance and timing issues, albeit in the form of contracts and delivery, fluctuations in refining output based on the quality of ore, etc.  Not even gold miners have guaranteed income.  Less so, given the Fed and CB manipulation of the commodities markets...

Have there been any updates on Namecoin payouts? I haven't received any payouts since early March.

Tips graciously accepted on my behalf by Mr. Pig. | object2212.com | BTC:1H78y8FVeQrWY6KnxA6WLFQGUoajCuiMAu | ETH:0x3c1bC39EC7F3f6b26ACb6eeeEFe7dE2f486a72E9

Hello.
I have the same problem. I started mine about 6 months ago and I have never received any namecoin and it is configure correctly in my "Configurable Options".

I see it.

The luck has been not good lately.
I wonder if wizkid somehow performs checks against block withholding.
Sorry if it's been asked already.

Why would you do that? I would understand if it would be PPS so you would keep difficulty down... As far as I know you can't submit found block yourself... Not sure exactly why but that is what I was told...

You can submit GBT blocks to the network yourself, not stratum blocks.

I do some checks against block withholding, although there is high variance in these checks for obvious reasons.

No, but some of my hardening from earlier is causing some issues.  I'm working on the code now to verify everything.  Long story short: my fault Sad

Please do this ASAP, not because I care, but because it gets asked on every damn page and that is getting slightly annoying.

Well, have to put namecoins off again to fix my error in the new CPPSRB code. Undecided

I was working on speedups for CPPSRB and seems I missed a minor error in one of my new functions, which has been causing the failsafes in the last ~48 hours.

Unfortunately, to be 100% safe, I need to fix the error and verify the data against the large shares database for that time-frame... which is likely going to take a bit of time.

I'll work on namecoin more after I fix the code and while I wait for processing on some of this data...

GHash is evil.

Getting very OT here but:

GHash is evil. <-- Why do you say that? It's a business, they are out to make money, is that evil?

-Dave

GHash was caught using their mining power to force doublespends on the network.  Someone was sending bitcoins to a gambling site and simultaneously doublespending the coins, but the doublespends were not broadcast.  Instead GHash was picking up the doublespends on blocks they mined and scamming the gambling site.  I forget the details exactly but this was all exposed some time ago.  They blamed it on a rogue admin who they supposedly fired.  You can find it somewhere if you search for it.

Just out of curiosity what sort of checking is possible against block withholding and faking Proof of Work ?

Clearly with the DDOS and namecoin hack, there are people expending great resources against this and probably every mining pool - but how do they plan to profit from their effort ?

These kind of things tend me a cat-and-mouse type game, so revealing the methods used would allow an attacker to disguise himself from it.
That being said, disclosure "out of curiosity" seems to be a bad idea. Smiley

Just out of curiosity what sort of checking is possible against block withholding and faking Proof of Work ?
These kind of things tend me a cat-and-mouse type game, so revealing the methods used would allow an attacker to disguise himself from it.
That being said, disclosure "out of curiosity" seems to be a bad idea. Smiley

it does seem that some pools are stuck playing without a full deck the past couple months
I've been around gaming and gambling my whole life, so it's second nature for me to sense when a game's balancing has been altered

the last couple months have had that feeling pretty strongly.. not in a pure variance way.. but in a lowered odds way.  The lows are lower and the highs are lower like an ace or two pulled from a deck

A miner that finds a block (in a pool) cannot claim it for itself, because by doing so, he would invalidate the hash, and could not claim the block. An if he was mining mining solo, but submitted his shares to the pool, the pool would reject it because the do not match what it expects.

So a miner willing to benefit from the profit splitting of a pool has to mine "for" the pool and cannot "steal" the pool the blocks it finds. HOWEVER, it can choose not to submit winning shares, but submit all other shares. So he benefits from the other pool miner's work, while not helping the pool at all.

Such behavior is usually pointless for a miner: It -HAS- to find shares and submit them to the pool to get his share of the pool's reward, so sorting a "winning" share out of it cannot help him spend less electricity/bandwith/work for the same reward. In fact, by witholding the winning shares, he hurts everybody in the pool equally, including himself.

It might not make any sense for a miner to do it, but it makes sense for somebody wishing to destroy a pool from doing it. Even if the attacker has only a small fraction of the pool, it will look like the pool has sustained bad luck, and miners will flee to other pools.

However, if attackers started to doing this on every pool, then it would cancel out, because the difficulty would decrease by the exact same amount the attacker controls. So it is an attack against individual pools, not against bitcoin itself.

CPPSRB is about 28 hours behind and catching up... probably early morning it should be done.  I'll keep an eye on it. Undecided
