Setup Support for AntMiner S2
----------------------------------

As the owner of 3 batch 1 S2's, i've had a couple of weeks to work through some of the issues involved in getting these setup and running.  Virtually everything I know about the S2 i've either learned from others here in this thread or i've described it myself in this thread.  I'm not BitMainTech nor do i work for them - I'm just an IT guy.

If you are struggling to get your S2 working and want a helping hand, I may be able to help.

I can share your screen with join.me and video conference with Skype.

0.1 BTC per hour, but only if I'm able to help.

Email me to setup a time.  I'm in Toronto, Ontario (eastern standard timezone)

So just as a recap, the steps you need to take if your SD card gets corrupted and a simple reset on the front control panel won't resolve it:

1) Power off your Antminer
2) Take out the control board.  On the back of where the ethernet cable plugs into you will see a MicroSD card, remove it.
3) Take MicroSD card out and put it in a SD card adapter to insert into a laptop or 5-in-1 card reader
4) Download The bitmain.img from https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16075357/bitmain.img.zip  (Courtesy of l1l1l1l1) as well as Win32DiskImager-0.
5) Use Win32DiskImager-0.exe to mount SD cards as an "image-able" device.  SD cards do not inherently accept images with default Imager software.
6) Image the Bitmain.img to image to your SD card.
7) Once done, plug it into your miner, make sure your ribbon cable is plugged into the main board nice and snug, and fire it up!

You should be done short of re-configuring your miner.  Remember that this resets it back to 192.168.1.99.  The image used does not work for me by default, so I had to "reset to default" with the front bottom-left button and reconfigure my settings.

If anyone wants a video demo of this I would be happy to make one if someone thinks it would help.  Cheers!

if you would be so kind.

i followed your instructions but the end result is the same as before.

flashing blues, flashing green, solid green solid red all on the Control board, lcd dispay works fine but neither the red nor green leds to the right stay lit.  404 Not Found & no access to interface.

edgar, don't know if you tried this but check ALL cables. I did find the ethernet cable inside the box loose and unplugged from the internal ethernet port...I say that cause the LCD lit up and showed you the default IP, so it makes me wonder if that is your prob.....
also the Ribbon cable to the LCD was loose at first, and I would check where it connects to the BBB backplane too. Good luck, looks like the FREE help is here!! Shocked

Did you put that hole in the side for the PSU fan ? Or is that a late batch 2 case ? My B2 does not have that case..
I wonder if this would help the bad PSU that came with one of my units??

I've received three Gen3 miners as well today. No problems with board coming out of the PCI slots. Only had one with the disconnected network cable inside.

All are up and running at 1005Gh/s on average.

The three are pulling 14.9 amps at 208v.

Antminer S2 turned up today, it was in horrible condition, cards loose everywhere, thermal paste everywhere, pci slots all bent to shit, after an hour and a half or so of fiddling (2 screws were stripped and needed to be drilled out) i managed to get it back together, then i had a problem with the screen, played around some more and got that working.

PROBLEM!

Its turning on and mining (all cards are flashing, hash rate on screen etc) but it will not allow me to access the settings and displays a "404 not found" error and on top of that it will not login via ssh with putty and tells me that the password i am using username: root password: root is not working, so i cannot even change pools.

Bitmain shipped me a unit that is basically mining for them! Sad

Can someone please help?

If I ever order one these I will be requesting that the cards be shipped uninstalled and wrapped separately. I think for now I am going to stay with the S-1's until some these issues get ironed out. Those S-1 ants are really great units.

I have one antminer S2 acting up.. runs fine for like 45 minutes but then powers it self off and can't power it on again for at least 10 minutes.
Something maybe faulty with a capacitor? or perhaps the PSU thats not able to actually hold the amount of power draw from the antminer?
Any advice?

Thanks

I think its the PSU, when removing all the boards and connections so only the PSU is connected the PSU won't power on either.. have to wait for at least 10 minutes to get it working again.
Damn I wished they kept with the platimax instead of the gold revision of enermax.

classic symptom of an overtaxed psu.

can you disconnect 3 boards maybe 2 boards run the machine short on boards . then add back boards until you are short one board.  my guess is it will run nonstop with 2 boards off not one board off.

if it runs non stop on 8 boards pull the psu and put in a good 1200 or 1300 watt psu.

I have had these high power draw issues with all kinds of psu's running gpis back in the day.

Interesting. I am curious as well. This is how they should have been designed. All of my cases are closed and the PSU turned inside, thus blowing the hot air inside the unit.

they are all under powered via the psu.

the unit calls for a 1200 watt psu not a 1000 watt unit.

not half of the stock psu's will last 60 days pulling the watts these units pull.

bitmain tech must have gotten an offer he could not refuse for these psu's.   I have this psu on preorder from amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JG5LSN8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I will order an s-2 when I get this psu

ATX PSUs vent hot air out the back (where the plug socket resides).

Yes so the psu was pulling hot air out of the unit.  i.e. a hot box test. see jonnyguru.com

not easy on a psu being asked to run at full capacity 24/7/365.

this new idea will make the chips run hotter and the psu will be a little bit cooler. since it will draw in cooler outside air.

TO all this is an under-speced psu for the s-2.  you need a decent 1200 watter to run  24/7/365 with this unit.

you guys can look back at my posts here

I see. Thanks a lot for clarifying and informing me, but the air inside is still hotter because of the modules, would rather it pulled from the room instead.  Was hoping I would not have to buy another PSU since I don't plan over clocking.  Giving it one last go, hopefully they run for more than 12 hours today before upgrading.
