http://grs.42tx.com/address/FrWPKm2gfspaQTb5JTijzaN68Gw68C2SZS 1385763GRS ...

It is this address assosiated with the attack. You do not hoard coins like that unless you know exactly what your doing and have a plan.

Hate to say it but it's time to dumb the coin.. unless you want to reward the attacker and make him rich.

Was very promising and the dev seems dedicated...

What is the lessons learned here? Why did it come to this? What made the attack possible?

Was the root cause the over 50% pool mining or is there flaws in Groestl algo?

UPDATE

EVERYBODY RELAX!

Dev and Pool OPS working together closely.
A fix will be implemented soon

Follow the discussion over at:
http://groestlcoin.org/forum/index.php?topic=47

In the meantime the block discovery time is ~ 1 minute as it should be. Not sure why.

IMO This issue provides opportunity to show how we handles themselves under pressure. In the long-term we can win confidence with our performance here.

I have also proposed a Team Groestlcoin member becomes oru Security Officer to assist Dev in preventing this happening again.

Thanks for your patience
Will keep you posted,

If this was Timewarp attack, then blockchain somewhere was injected double transaction or false coins.
Is that right?

Also, there is DGWv3 in Darkcoin codebase, and perhaps it is worth forking straight to v3.

I will go post in the other thread as well, but if there is anything in DGW v3 that is desirable for other reasons then it doesn't make sense to not go straight to that version.

Just my thoughts, and I don't think this is too bad of a problem right now. Looks like everyone that is mining would be getting the benefit of the lowered difficulty so even though it is not the most desirable situation, it isn't horribly unfairly distributed to just one person (as far as I can see from what has been posted).

I am still all for GRS, I think it is a really great coin.

Hi everyone!

The problem seem to haven been solved for a few hours now.
Great work everyone (especially pool operators)!

Difficulty is now in the 300 range and block time as designed.

Some explanation of the situation (how I see it):
 1) No coins were lost or stolen
 2) The number of coins we generated during last couple of days was 86% more than designed
 3) These extra coins were evenly distributed across miners and investors who were buying GRS
 4) Extra flow of coins has decreased the price of GRS at exchanges

What happens now:
 * The price of GRS will rise, since it is now hard to mine them
 * If you were plannnig to buy GRS now is a good time
 * We will fork in a few days to DGWv3 to avoid this happening in future (more on this below)

Has it harmed Groestlcoin?
A little bit in the short term.
But in the long term - I think it was actually a plus. The community didn't panic too much, pool operators have shown their support, we came up with a plan of fixing this and succeeded.

I have discussed this issue with DGW author and he is recommending that we fork into DGW v3, see below:

to me
DGW v1 is exploitable via timewarp. I would update ASAP to v3. It's
also the case that you'll have to hard fork to do that.

Keep on Groestling!

And please start moving to the new official forum. This thread is planned for retirement.

PS: Some images from dwarfpool (notice the raise of difficulty and decrease in the number of found blocks):

And since dwarfpool has about 50% of hashrate (yes, again!!!) it seriously harms the DGW algo and it sets totally incorrect difficulty.

Do you write such a bullshit in your right mind or accuse dwarves again just using the situation??

Why do you prejudice the reputation of my pool to Dark' dev?? Yesterday by PM we found that the problem was not on my pool and not on my wallet.

After restart of suprnova server, the whole groestl-network came to the normal state! Since the same hour!

Ocminer, sorry, I wasn't and 'm not accusing anyone, everything can happen in such a complex crypto structure to everyone. I just defend myself, I find it unfair to public obviously wrong information

So, really "GREAT WORK" srcxxx!

Gentlemen,

after having worked so well together please can we keep things cøøl?

Atrides - Im sure Evan has only respect for your pool

Consider the reputation of GRS and the members of the community when posting!
It is in all our interests to better serve Groestlcoin, which you have done so admirably in the last 36 hours.

THANK YOU TO THE DEV & ALL THE POOL OPS WHO WORKED TOGETHER TO HANDLE THIS SITUATION SO QUICKLY AND PROFESSIONALY

I LOVE THIS COIN: PLS STAY FOCUSED ON THE HARD FORK AHEAD AND KEEP WORKING WELL TOGETHER!

Pls focus on this part of the message:

Again, is it?

I'm not accusing you of anything and I think we exchanged many PMs yesterday and are on friendly terms.

As I already PMd you...

I agree that rebooting suprnova.cc may have fixed the network, but I don't see how that is possible. The timestamps of all suprnova blocks were incorrect only in web frontend.
But they were correct in block explorer.

While on the other hand, some timestamps from your server were wrong. See screenshots in previous posts.

I do not think that you deliberately did something to cause this.

Perhaps one of your miners was solving a block and setting wrong timestamp and it was backed up by a large pool and thus got confirmed.
I honestly don't know.

What I know is:
* I don't want to get into a fight with you. I think our last communications were quite friendly. If I have offended you, I apologize.
* We need to fork into DGWv3 to avoid stuff like this from happening
* I still think that having 40% - 60% of hash on one pool is bad. When one of the pools die, the balance shifts too much.

And since dwarfpool has about 50% of hashrate (yes, again!!!) it seriously harms the DGW algo and it sets totally incorrect difficulty.
Do you write such a bullshit in your right mind or accuse dwarves again just using the situation??

As for this item... I stand by it. I think that one pool having close to 50% of network is very bad.
As we've seen, when cryptohunger crashed, you had more than 50% for some time.
I want broader distribution of hashrate. And there is nothing personal in this.
Even from user's perspective. If you see a few pages back, when my pool went down, people straight away started talking about 51% attack.

Thanks

I'm a small miner and I have consistently stuck with dwarfpool from the beginning. It is a simple and elegant website. It is reliable, has great features and is very functional. In my mind its UI is more Google and others are like Bing and Yahoo. I just like it better than the other pools I have tried.

I'm not trying to bash any of the other pool specifically, but as  whole I wish pools would focus more on function and less on style. Tongue

I agree with that.
Also, it's been quite stable lately.

As for design, I like the http://max.1gh.com/ more.
