What a night! We saw all the details that make football beautiful tonight. It was unclear until the last moment whether Germany, Japan, Costa Rica or Spain would advance to the next round. We watched two matches with a very high threshold of excitement. I really wanted Costa Rica to surprise and go to the next round, but they failed. :( Also, Germany's early elimination from the cup was also a big surprise for everyone. Good bye Germany. Japan spoilt their big win over Costa Rica. Japan has won two big European countries topping the table. Winning tow former world cup champions in the group stage  and this is so impressive. Japan deserves a public holiday. It is a pity Germany have to leave the world cup this way. My worries now is to be sure Spain isn't overhyped seeing how the couldn't get two straight wins in a group where the were favourite to stay at the top.

The hopes for them seemed to be running out first but we watched another incredible effort by Germany. They scored 3 goals in 20 minutes and brought the score to 4-2. Germany actually wasted even more opportunities in this match so it could have been a much bigger win than this.

However Japan just destroyed their hopes anyway. It was a huge character put by them in the second half. Despite Spain's big dominance they still made their best effort and got 2-1 ahead in the first minutes of the second half. These goals came by only a three-minute interval by the way which shocked Spain for sure. Just imagine what a surprising result it would be if Costa Rica also beat Germany today.  

To tell the truth, I appreciate Japan's determination more than Germany. They absolutely deserved this qualification.

It will not count for anything, Spain could not win against Japan, so it means both Costa Rica and Germany who have won this competition four times before are out. The game ended dramatically, it was unexpected that Japan was able to turn things around even though Spain escaped but this result made them learn a valuable lesson that whoever their opponent should not underestimate them on the field. Grief envelops Germany, which has maximized all of its abilities but what can it do if Japan wins, it will be increasingly difficult for them to catch up.

Many unexpected things happened in the world cup, competition is not just about big team names but also high fighting spirit and more importantly solid team performance will bring satisfying results.

Yep..it's all over for Germany unfortunately and they need to understand that ego and fancy stuff won't win games for them.
Surprise of the night in a very positive way is Japan who once again show great force and managed to score twice against Spain ...a team of Spain that were on the verge of elimination for a couple of minutes when Costa Rica had 2-1 and I think this one of the most craziest groups in recent World Cup   .

Germany is out in the group stage in two world cups in a row now which is a total shame for them i can imagine. This match today was also weird again from Germany. Of course they were dominating Costa Rica but at one point they were even 1-2 down against them which should never happen. It is also true though that Germany did basically everything today that they could do. They won their game with 4-2 but that was just not enough because Japan somehow managed to win 2-1 against Spain which nobody expected before i would guess.

I also have to say, that the result of Japan vs. Spain smells pretty fishy to me. Spain is probably very happy now that they only placed second in the group because now they will face Marocco in the round of the last 16 instead of Croatia, so i can imagine that Spain did not really want to score the equalizer anymore. That would be very bad sportsmanship though.

Luis Enrique's match strategy is excellent. He is capable of defeating any team with his amazing match strategy. Spain took the lead in just 11 minutes of the match with Alvaro Morata's goal. And now they are not giving the Japanese players any chance to create an attack. Instead of attacking and scoring goals, Spain's players now aim to keep possession of the ball. And this they are doing very well. Since Spain keep the defense tight and then keep possession, they will not concede a goal unless they are extremely unlucky.

What a day in the world cup and what a group we have in group E.
Here we've got Belgium crashing out of the world cup, Germany also have crashed out of the world cup, we've had the resignation of the Belgium coach and the tournament just keeps getting interesting.

It's just been turns and turns of events in the group E with the group haven't been restructured over 3 different times with a high rate of inter dependency on each side. We had turns where it was Spain and Germany leading as group favourites in the first half. Shortly into the second half, we had Costa Rica and Japan leading with both teams beating the giants of theee group by 2 goals to one. Next, we saw a German equalizer and win to put Spain in while waiting on Spain to equalise and possibly win Japan to get Geemany in but, Spain just couldn't and Germany is out.

Interesting group it was and a well deserved level up for Japan, haven't beaten both Germany and Spian.

Japan really deserves the spotlight in the group phase this time because indeed 2 matches with big clubs they don't even flinch and I like their transition in defending and counter-attacking quickly when facing stronger opponents. Japan really brought almost all of its players in defense when they were already ahead with a fairly quick comeback because it was only 3 minutes away.
It was really a very good match but Germany had to be a victim in this case, they really played very well actually and indeed they wanted to score a lot of goals in the game against Costa Rica but it was in vain for them because it was the goal difference very different quite a lot but it will be a different story if Spain manages to draw in this match but it is very unfortunate indeed that they also failed as a superior team.

everyone didn't expect Japan to be able to beat Spain and Germany, even though Japan lost to Costa Rica 1-0,, and it was really a very tight score between Spain and Germany, if only Germany scored more goals then Spain would be eliminated. the final result of the group E stage is really confusing lol.

Surprisingly, Japan succeeded in winning Group E after beating Spain 2-1, Japan lead first standing with 6 points and Spain as 2nd position have  4 points the same with Germany but ahead on goal difference. Costa Rica was actually able to keep up with Germany's game after winning 2-1 until the 70th minute and opening up the opportunity to qualify for the last 16, but conceded two goals at the end of the game making Costa Rica's dream of qualifying for the last 16 dashed.

in the round of 16, Japan will face the runner up in group F is Croatia and Spain have waiting for by the winner of group F is Morocco, actually Spain have advantage and thanks to Germany because beat Costa Rica and get chance qualify to 16 round.

Why did Spain avoid Croatia? Does Croatia look so strong to Spain that Spain is trying to spare itself from Croatia. Because I saw that Spain also tried to win the game even though it failed for Spain today and I don't think that Spain deliberately lost just because they wanted to avoid meeting Croatia in the next round. For quite a number of world cup years now, I can't really recall the last time that Germany did not qualify for group stage games in world cup.
For Japan vs Spain, I was not surprised to see Japan won Spain, that could be seen from their performances in those last matches they played. I sensed such win could happen, with the evidence of what the smaller teams are doing to the bigger teams in this tournament, left me with no doubts.

Despite the win of Germany over Costa Rica, they're still out of the World Cup. I'm sure that many are disappointed about this fact with Germany. And for Japan, it's also another surprising win from them. Who expected that Japan would be this good and beat Spain? I think that the majority is with Spain and think that they'll have an easy win against Japan. But this is world cup, just like any other major league that I've watched, there's always the upsets.

They made their progress easier and also - very important imho - made sure they will no longer risk meeting Germany again at this world cup, a team with the potential (even when they to do bad in groups) to win the world cup. Two birds with one stone, so why don't just try it if the stars did align well for that? (Sorry/no offense for Germans, it was just math here).

This was probably a difference from Moriyasu's tactics. Against Costa Rica they were more open in their game and more daring to play the ball in the middle which was not very good and they had to lose but against bigger clubs like Spain and Germany they were much more careful and played enough devensivie so they don't lose. concede goals and this strategy is very good indeed carried out by them. 2 wins against big clubs clearly gave them more enthusiasm to face Croatia in the knockout phase later.
