How disappointing such an incident must be for the family, and I can only imagine the hardship such an act must have thrown the family into, this is one the things that leads addicted gamblers to depression which could later result to suicide if the matter is looked into on time..

It's different in alcohol addiction actually, I mean the process. I think I've been there when I was younger. Alcohol will start to taste sweet when you become addicted to it while it is supposed to taste really bad for others.
In gambling, it becomes a calling. Most of the time they want to get back whatever losses they experienced. Chasing losses. While for a few, it is because they felt how good the feeling of winning and spending it on something else.
I am not a gambling addict but I felt the chasing losses part where I want my money back. But after I lost everything in my balance I stopped and never did that again. It just leads to destruction and a more losing streak because you are not thinking straight anymore. Drunk to the illusion that one good winning bet will get you back on track. It does not work like that, especially in casino games. They will just keep on taking, they might give a little but the system will always be on the business side.

Gambling addiction has caused people to do many harmful things without realizing what they're doing to be bad. Addiction makes you only think about satisfying it first before any other thing that matters so you'll go the extra miles just to get that money you need to gamble.

Self control can't be forgotten when you get addicted to gambling, when you weren't addicted you can easily control your self to prevent you from spending too much to gamble or doing unreasonable things but when you get addicted, you forget all about self control.
