I've got no experience about the prisons, but it seems prisoners engage in some form of games, to keep themselves busy. However, don't know what would be used in exchange for money, it could be their meal. Such cases as that of the man in Op's description, would leave him serving multiple years in prison. Which means he'd be very old before he gets out of the prison custody. However, being in prison, may not change the man's attitude, but his aging bodies won't let him think about gambling anymore. Even if gambling addict has job and weekly or monthly income, with gambling addict who doesn't have job or income, in the end they are the same, namely experiencing destruction which is really very difficult, nothing is easy in the case of gambling addiction.
But things are different if gambling addict can immediately realize their addiction and are able to try to cure the addiction they are experiencing, no gambler will really be able to get through the addiction period happily because their mindset is different.
Gambling addicts will always have ambition and also sense of optimism regarding their opinions regarding their hopes in gambling, they try to earn money and will spend it in betting sessions so that they will never achieve any success.
