I hope it is better for a gambler if he keeps his gambling habit a secret. Because in the society we live in today, different people live in different mindsets. But I have seen many murubbis in my area who make a lot of bad comments about such gambling or betting who indulge in this activity. In that case it is understood that when a gambler places a bet on his name, his family is called various bad words by the people of the society. Accordingly if a gambler keeps his gambling a secret then it is definitely a good sign. Not sure though, you can only keep that secret for that long. Just a couple of months ago, I saw my neighbor in a land base casino and he doesn't want me to tell it to the neighborhood. But the thing is someone have seen him and his wife and so there is a noise within the place because his job is like to give lectures or something.

If you live alone, you can live as you please. But in reality, we don't live alone, we have a big family. We may feel don't care about people critics, but our family may view it differently. Many gamblers keep a secret of their gambling activity because they don't want to bother their family. In certain circles, people who gamble can be viewed as doing something bad. So the people closest to the gamblers can also be considered as bad people. This judgement can have a serious psychological impact on our family. People call it as a social punishment.

I think even under debt, something like gambling won't also be part of the said interrogation. Like debt for example, as you mentioned, the purpose will be to ask if they can pay a certain money and that's it. Indeed. No one can force us to tell our habits, including our gambling habit. So, it is not a must to tell people, we have the right to keep it in a secret. We know that telling others about our gambling habit probably brings negative impacts only. Moreover, if we live in religious society, they are likely to judge us negatively. So, the best choice is to keep our gambling activity privately.

Debt is also a serious case, it is surely to give bad impact to our family. It is a must tell our family if we are in debt, they deserve to know it. If we are difficult to repay, we probably get a help to our family. It is actually the same as gambling habit, it is no problem to tell our family but we shouldn't to tell other people (random people, outside of our family). Rightly said!  Keeping our gambling habit a secret should not be a big deal.  Keeping it secret saves us from prying eyes that convict people of crimes just learning that they are into gambling.  Aside from that, we don't have any responsibility to inform them about what we do in our lives.  So keeping our gambling in secret is a good thing considering the space and peace we can get from hidiing gambling activities.

This is especially useful in communities that are closed and that see gambling with bad eyes, even if the person is not addicted and it is something they enjoy doing as a way to entertain themselves.

It’s much better to keep your activities to yourself. People are open to mostly criticism and condemnation from the society when they tend to always publicize their everyday lives. I don't understand what the OP mean by "be proud of what you are doing". I mean how can one be proud of gambling while we all agree that it is not and should not be seen as a means of income? The two predominant religion frown against gambling and even tagged it as a sinful act. Although, some people don't care about people's opinion which is not bad but if you have regard for the religion you practice, you can not comfortably boast or proud of engaging in gambling.

So, in my opinion, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping your gambling habit a secret. It has nothing to do with people's perception but to respect religion and not disrespecting publicly. When you offend someone and you boast about it, it triggers the anger of the person you offended but when you keep it a secret, the person might overlooked it. That's the case with gambling and hence majority can not be proud of it in a religious society.
