For this same reason I have already written Real Madrid off but still not forgetting that they are one team that can turn things around when it's not going their way in this very competition, I have that in mind but still I just want to save myself the unnecessary stress of having high expectations from them this season. It's not been fair on them for some years now with injuries and I partly blame the president for that for not buying suitable replacements for these coaches. I still maintain that Ancelotti was sacked out of the negligence of the president for not giving him players when his team was struck by injuries and Perez turned and blamed Ancelotti for the players not performing. In my opinion, Real Madrid low competiveness was brought by multiple injuries that's what I think and I'm not expecting any miracle for them against Manchester City even though I will be wishing in my heart that they still qualify.

I think you're right, Real Madrid has made choices in recent years that could have been better. For example, even the choice of the new coach, who was then replaced, had devastating effects in my opinion. With your sentiment above, it looks like you are underrating or looking down on this Newcastle team, because they might be poor in the English premier league, but in the uefa champions league, they are a different animal all together.
Yes it's true that Barcelona are the favourite since they have a lot of rich history in the competition, added with their level, but this Newcastle team has proven to be capable of winning most top teams that comes their way in the uefa champions league, so Barcelona will be doing themselves a bad thing by looking down on this Newcastle team because they might be shocked if they ever approach this game with complacency.

Who do you think he should have started? Injured players who weren't even on the bench? Arbeloa is currently in no doubt because he's simply playing with healthy players. Barcelona are the favorites to win the match against Newcastle united in their next round of the champions league but saying it won't be difficult for them is a lie. The match will not be easy for them this time just because they won against them in the league phase of the champions league. Newcastle are always good when they play against top teams so the fact that they are doing well in the champions league and also because this is the knockout stage will even make Newcastle more serious to not lose. I will be too harsh to be saying that their season is a total failure cause we have seen some fine young players emerge, which will be a major addition to their team going forward.

Though they may go trophy less this season, but lesson was learnt on the area the team needs to strengthen, and players that needs to be shown the door were also discovered.

For the past two seasons they have struggled in midfield since the retirement of Toni kroos, and we all can attest to the fact that he was like their conductor in midfield.

Ontil now, he has not been replaced, that why they mostly struggle to control games against a bigger side, so all these are lessons and experience were Real madrid hierarchy needs to learn from, cause the season in my  perspective is not a total failure even though they go trophyless.
