I think this is the best factual article that I've read explaining the gas relations between Russia and Ukraine, and how Ukraine has been consistently shooting itself in both feet.

“Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.”
“We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”
“It is important to fight and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then can evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated.”

Ukraine's failure to pay gas debt may cut gas supply to Europe - Russia’s energy minister

Most of the gas will be diverted to the Nord Stream. So consumers in Germany and Italy will face no shortages. But I think the Eastern European countries might find themselves a bit under-supplied.

Ukrainian citizens will pay 56% more for gas, starting 1st of May. This is the decision reached by Ukrainian cabinet of Ministers aimed at satisfying IMF demand to qualify to receive economic help.

The gas war continues, now in Europe and WTO:
http://www.forbes.ru/news/256295-rossiya-podala-v-vto-isk-protiv-tretego-energopaketa-evrosoyuza

Russia sent a complaint to WTO against Europe's "third energy pack", which might force gas producers to relinquish control over pipes on European territory.

Doesn't matter much. The Nord stream is in the Baltic sea, and only a small portion runs through Germany. The proposed South Stream is also around 75% outside the European territory.

Gazprom reportedly drops South Stream branch to Italy

Quote
Russian gas monopoly Gazprom has reportedly abandoned plans to build a section of the Russian-backed South Stream gas pipeline to Italy, a day after the Russian company opted for a South Stream pipeline branch to Austria. It is more interesting how the U.S. astronauts are going to get back to Earth from the station... Should they orchestrate a Maidan there, in space? Grin

By the way, Ukraine refused to pay in advance for the gas supplies in June... Cool

How many US astronauts are there in the ISS right now? And how many Russians are there? Here is the plan. The Americans can take the Russians hostage, and ask the Roskosmos to send a rocket to transport them to some shitty location within the US.

Russia to supply gas to Ukraine on prepaid basis from June 1

http://en.itar-tass.com/economy/730982

Quote
Russia will supply natural gas to Ukraine on a prepaid basis from June 1, Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Thursday, May 8. “May 7 was the last day when Ukraine had to pay for the gas supplied. We have not received any payment from Naftogaz of Ukraine since March of this year. Ukraine’s overall debt for gas has reached 3,508 billion U.S. dollars up to date,” he said. In accordance with Clauses 5.1.5 and 5.8 of the contract for the supply of gas made by and between Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine in 2009, failure to perform the obligations entails an automatic transition to gas supplies on a prepaid basis from June 1, 2014, Novak said.

Russia does not preclude that gas deliveries to Ukraine will be stopped.

I just can't understand if the IMF couldn't have made a loan to Ukraine on the condition that it would pay off the debt (or some part of)? Shocked

I would not be surprised if one of the IMF conditions was that the money were not to be used to pay Russia for its gas.
