I would not be surprised if one of the IMF conditions was that the money were not to be used to pay Russia for its gas.

And they have the insolence to blame Gazprom for cutting off the gas supplies to Ukraine... Or, as a conspiracy theory, if there was such a condition (the money was not to be used to pay off the debt), the goal of the IMF could be to stifle Ukraine through Gazprom (no gas means no heavy industry and no exports) and make it into an eternal debtor (see Argentina)... Cool

In the short term Ukraine is going to be OK, I think. The South Stream pipeline might take a few more years to complete. After that, it is going to be a complete disaster. Russia will cut the gas flow, until all the debts are paid including the penalties.

Well, the Europe is going to pitch in for the next winter to counter "the threat coming from Kremlin", in that they demand payment for the gas, using it as a "weapon":

Russia Threatens to cut off Natural Gas to Ukraine
http://news.yahoo.com/russia-threatens-cut-off-ukraine-gas-june-3-154426657.html
Quote
Moscow (AFP) - Russia's state energy giant Gazprom warned on Monday that it may halt natural gas shipments to Ukraine on June 3 in a move that could impact the supplies of at least 18 EU nations.

Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller said Ukraine must pay upfront for its June deliveries because of outstanding debts. He added that Kiev had until the morning of June 3 to make the payment "or Ukraine will receive zero cubic metres (of gas) in June," Interfax reported.

Not so much to cut of, but to actually get some money for the gas they are going to delivering:

Gazprom to cut supplies to Ukraine from June if no prepayment
http://rt.com/business/158444-russia-ukraine-gas-supplies/

Quote
Kiev already owes the company more than $3.5 billion, which compares to Gazprom’s annual gas supply to Poland.

“In case Ukraine does not pay for the June supplies, Gazprom will notify the Ukrainian side, before 10am on June 3, and the volume of gas will be supplied to Ukraine in accordance with the advanced payment,” Miller said.

But Europe will suffer if Ukraine does not pay:

Quote
“The Ukrainian energy minister, Yury Prodan, conveyed alarming information saying that Ukraine does not guarantee gas injections to underground storages in the summer period… which means they do not guarantee the transit of gas to European countries due to the lack of resources – and the unwillingness to solve the problem in principle,” Novak said.

Ukraine must pay a bill of 1.66 billion dollars for continued gas deliveries in June, based on delivery of 144 million m3 per day.

Current Ukrainian debt is 3.508 billion dollars

So it is almost sure that some of the deliveries of the Russian gas to the EU will be disrupted. Germany will be safe, because they have the Nord Stream. Unfortunately the South Stream is no where near completion.  Angry

If I'm not mistaken, Russia has proposed to send the UN peacekeepers to Ukraine, but the Western anti-Russian block has vetoed this proposal at the Security Council... If the said is true, why should Russia care after all? Cool

It is more interesting how the U.S. astronauts are going to get back to Earth from the station... Should they orchestrate a Maidan there, in space? Grin

How many US astronauts are there in the ISS right now? And how many Russians are there? Here is the plan. The Americans can take the Russians hostage, and ask the Roskosmos to send a rocket to transport them to some shitty location within the US.

Luckily astronauts and cosmonauts are better people then the ones stuck down here on earth.  They will work together to help each other regardless of what is decided down here.

This is nothing new. I live in EU so I know how Russians are manipulating gas prices. For some countries price of gas is lower just like that or because Putin says so, others must pay more. For example for Germany Russian gas is much cheaper than for Poland, and you need to pump it further to reach Germany, not to mention Germany are a lot richer than Poland. Economic aggression is in motion for a long time.

Did you ever wonder why Germany gets Russian gas cheaper than Poland (if this is actually being the case)? Cool

Also, the Nord Stream leads to Germany, not to Poland, so if Poland gets natural gas from the Nord Stream, it can get the gas only from Germany, right? How then can Poland be nearer in the pipes distance than Germany (not mentioning that it is Germany which resells the gas from Russia)? Roll Eyes

What deisik said, plus, this is market economy, and each state can negotiate its price. It all depends on how good they are at paying their bills and what they can offer in return. Lithuania got a gas price cut a few days ago, and Lithuania is not exactly a pal of Russia...

Just recalled that the cheapest natural gas in Europe is supplied to Turkey. The reason for this is quite simple though, they entered into a 25 year contract with Gasprom... Cool

I think that a lot of the Russian gas, which is destined to the Balkans actually pass through the Turkish territory. That is also one of the reasons why the gas price in Turkey is low.

It seems that you're wrong about this. The Balkans get Russian gas through the pipelines on the Ukrainian territory... Cool

Part of. But the contract in question was signed between Russia and Turkey in 1998 (valid through 2022) when there was no Blue Stream yet (built in 2005)... Cool

I don't know the true reasons why Russia takes this stance against Ukraine, but I feel truly sorry for the people living in Ukraine and are victim to the testosteron games being played.

No games. Only contract conditions, lol.
