as i write here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577267.msg7512614#msg7512614 it seams that my connection is slow and it will not help to mine with other pools to get the full scratchpad. I wonder how fast must be the connection when srcatchpad increase, and what will be the solution for this issue?

the solution is to have a stratum miner and completely get rid of simpleminer which uses http.  the dev is working on it.

Good to know. Especial when difficulty increase and solo get more harder.

is there any way to tell how much of the network hashrate is from cpu miners and how much is from secret nvidia gpu miners? I'd like to try and mine, but I'd at least like to know what I'm up against...am I bringing a knife to a gunfight, or a spoon?

That would be cool but I don't know that that is possible.

I've tried to think of some ways to determine it, but unless a non-standard miner is doing something strange with the way it puts blocks in the chain, it's (hopefully) impossible.  I say hopefully because otherwise, I think it would represent a weakness in the anonymity of cryptonote.

If they're based on something like the FCN miner, though, you could look at the 'extra' field to see if, e.g., some weirdly huge proportion of the blocks seem to be being merge-mined.  But that's a really long shot.

But another perhaps more pragmatic way to view it (as I do) is:  Is the math in your favor with the profitability of mining BBR vs any other coin?  If so, mine BBR.  If not, mine another coin and buy BBR.  It doesn't really matter if someone else is mining more profitably on a coin than you are;  the most important thing for you as a miner is maximizing your profitability and/or helping keep the network of a coin you support strong and decentralized.  If you pool mine, my view is that profit should rule.  But BBR is still probably best solo-mined if you have a few machines.  I cloud mine when it's profitable, but I solo mine full time on 5x Intel Haswell-based machines at home, and I find a block every other day or so.

The quick & dirty calculation:  Blocks per day = Hash rate in mh/s * 86.4 / diff in billions.

So 400kh/s machine:  0.4 * 86.4 / 300 = 0.115 blocks/day (a block every 8.6 days).

Hi,

Trying to get started with the Boolberry GUI wallet. However I'm running into the following error whenever I try to generate a new wallet:
"The file name is not valid."

Any clues on how I can resolve this?

Tried looking it up, but couldn't find anything.

Steps taken:
(1) Downloaded Full Windows Package (bbr-win64-v0.2.0.24(1ada156).zip)
(2) Clicked on qt-boolb.exe. Waited for a connection, status = online with 8 connections
(3) Clicked on generate new wallet
(4) I type in a file name however when I click save I get the following error:
- "The file name is not valid."

Thanks

What names have you tried? Where are you saving them?

I was able to reproduce the error if i chose a name with no extension such as "wallet". Generation worked with an extension such as "wallet.bin".

Thank you - it was the lack of the .bin extension that was the problem.

I've been able to create wallets on other Cryptonote coins (e.g. Monero) without the .bin extensions, now wondering if this is likely to be an issue down the road?

The command line version will accept "wallet" as extension. Also, I bet you could rename it and remove extension. The extension is probably only validated during creation.

If there is an issue, it can be easily changed.

I have no extension since I used command line.
In general, things like ".bin" extensions need to be eliminated.

Until crypto is basically idiot-proof like using a bank web site...
It will be just a hobby for engineers and super-geeks and 20ish speculators...
And, no, Bitcoin is not even close to achieving mainstream acceptance.

Where does the 86.4 come from?

86400 seconds in a day.

Hashrate * seconds/day / diff

I just factor out all of the millions and billions to keep it to easy-to-check numbers.
The example above is actually:

400,000 * 86,400 / 300,000,000,000

but if you cancel out all of those zeros in an appropriate way, you get 0.4 * 86.4 / 300, and that's a lot easier to do in your head or on your phone calculator.

I didn't think bin was a good one either.

What do you suggest and why? No extension, .dat, other?

...keep working on job sync...

Even once this is working properly and finally a gpu miner can be released, won't it be for Nvidia cards only? Isn't the guy that created the Nvidia miner has the majority of the network hash?

Any ideas?

Hi there,

Please follow these steps:

1- Download http://boolberry.com/downloads.html
2- Create a pool.bat file
3- Copy / Paste simpleminer.exe --pool-addr bbr.farm:5555 --login wallet_address --pass x --mining-threads n

Change wallet_address, x "can be anything",
n 2 for dual core
n 4 for quad core

Have fun mining with us  Smiley

Good news!

cpuminer-multi now can fetch scratchpad from server:

Yes it will be Nvidia. Cbuchner1 has minority of network hash. Solo cloud miners (EC2) have majority of network hash.

Tiny Go bindings update - some small performance improvements, and a new demo program that's a reasonable basis for simple blockchain analytics (blockinfo/blockinfo.go)

https://github.com/dave-andersen/gobbr

At this point, it could be used to write simple programs to calculate the block reward and difficulty and emit profitability, etc.  I don't have exchange bindings for Poloniex or Mintpal, but if you had a favorite library to talk to them, it should be straightforward to build a mining profitability calculator.

For example, to calculate the trailing 24h block reward, you might write something like (without error checking):

Code:
d := gobbr.NewDaemon(DAEMON_ADDRESS)

height, _ := d.GetHeight()

reward := uint64(0)
nonOrphans := 0

for i := (height-720); i < height; i++ {
        bh, _ := d.GetBlockHeaderByHeight(i)
        if !bh.OrphanStatus {
                nonOrphans++
                reward += bh.Reward
        }
}
fmt.Printf("Average 24 hour reward: %.2f\n", float64(reward)/(nonOrphans * gobbr.Multiplier))

There is a more complete example of that code in https://github.com/dave-andersen/gobbr/blob/master/blockinfo/blockinfo.go
(As a warning, it takes about 30 seconds to run - at least, while also mining on all cores).

Probably still only of interest to me as I try to get it up to speed for some other hacking, but if anyone would like to use it or thinks it would be perfect for them if only it did one thing, please let me know. Smiley
