At the risk of providing facts:  I was perhaps 1/4th of that increase - with apologies.  It was EC2, no GPU.

I suspect I know what happened:  I looked at the diff, calculated that it was profitable on EC2 to mine at a particular rate, and launched quite a few hundred c3.8xlarge instances.  My goal was to let the diff creep back up to where it should be based on the hashrate, and top out at the end of where it was profitable on EC2, and then kill the instances.

... what I forgot is that this wasn't a vacuum.  The hash rate increased *way* faster than I thought it would, and my guess is that about 10 other people all had the same idea at about the same time when the profitability calculation looked positive.  One or two of them probably launched up to 1000 instances.

The combination of all that resulted in a huge diff spike (which I think might be interacting with a mis-tuned parameter in the difficulty retargeting).  When I got up this morning, I saw the diff, said words I won't utter in a public forum, and immediately killed all of my instances.  Looking at the hash rate graph, I think other people still had instances starting up or running, because it kept increasing even after I killed about 600mh/s.  And then it tanked when all of the cloud miners suddenly realized they were bleeding away money.

I'm not going to do that again.

You could see there just a lot of new connections, and a lot of peers appeared in greylist. And this is only peers seen by one machine(monitoring node).

So it seems that it was just huge amazon evil.

I think we need to implement Kimoto's Gravity Well to regulate difficulty. It will change the difficulty more quickly.

While I agree that the aws miners are currently problematic for this note, primarily because of the difficulty adjustment algorithm, a GPU miner is not the correct solution to that problem. If you think having an onslaught of GPU miners seeking the smallest increase in their daily profitability is going to be even remotely beneficial for the value of the currency and the investors, you're sadly mistaken.

I think a modification to your difficulty algo should be your objective. I'd avoid GPU mineability at all costs.

Hello fellow Boolberrians, I have recently joined the community by purchasing a couple thousand BBR.  I have been following the project but preferred to wait for an exchange before I jumped in, thinking I might have to pay a small premium.  When I first looked into purchasing BBR was trading on the forums for around 0.0035-0.004 which turns out to be about the ATH for the coin.  I thought once it hit the exchange it would see at least 0.006 but when I looked it was only around 0.0015 so I sent some Bitcoin over and ended up buying up to 0.002 it has since fallen to 0.0009 and after reading the forums with people renting rigs it has me concerned that there are more people looking for the quick buck then really want to see Boolberry succeed.  After doing some research I decided that I wanted to hedge my dark and XC with a cryptonote coin and decided the Boolberry seem to be the most innovative and motivated to complete a solid project first.  With all the cloud miners coming online and offline have you considered reducing the Block reward to half or a quarter of the original mintage numbers.  This move seemed to work well for both DRK and XC and seems that it could help reduce future bloating by simply reducing the number of coins (I realize their could still be as many transactions/ but with only 1/4 supply maybe not!)

Anyways hope a GUI wallet comes out soon, and can't wait to see what the community develops

Personally I'd prefer something a little less cutesy and which plays up the "bool" part of it (i.e. on/off or true/false symbolism).

(just bought my first BBR.. I hold XMR and BBR now, as they're the only interesting cryptonote coins.)

Well, i see as a main problem now is that we don't have pools. Since we have a different PoW it's not so easy to be add BBR to existing pools.
I'm working now on simple built-in pool, to allow everyone to run his own daemon-based pool withot any development, just plug-and-pool.

But if this won't help - i'll hardfork BBR with new difficulty adjustment.

I think the pool won't help on difficulty adjustment a lot. The Gravity Well was developed when the pool mining was available for those coins.
