I tried to upgrade to version 0.10 from 0.9.4 and it's telling me my database is incompatible and I need to recync? Do I need to download the whole blockchain again? What did you do in version 0.10? :/

Yes, you should download / resync the chain. It's a lot faster now, but will still take quite a while if not on an ssd drive.  Thanks.

Ok thanks. I'll postpone the update for quite a bit then Smiley

To add, the resync (or migration) is needed due to the significant performance improvements and reduction of the blockchain size.

Sounds like we need a blockchain convert tool, redownloading is hack.

I hate to say it but I think monero may actually be better than zcash but I still have a few questions. My problem is with the zcash trusted setup, but back to that later.

First a question about monero. So monero has a invisible blockchain as do all cryptonote coins. But what if Alice sends bob $100 in monero and bob claims he never got it?
Since xmr does not have a transparent blockchain (btc, etc) to publicly audit I guess Alice would send bob the wallet viewkey right? What if a 3rd party (ebay, etc) needed to review the dispute, Alice would just send them the viewkey too, right?
What if bob or the 3rd party published the viewkey on the internet, Wouldn't everyone be able to see the transaction and wouldn't everyone be able to see all the wallet addresses or transactions? Thanks Smiley

If so, is the same true of zcash?

There is a viewkey for your wallet and individual viewkeys for each transaction.

If Alice sends Bob 100 XMR and Bob says he never got it, Alice can prove it using the transaction id, the transaction viewkey, and the public XMR address of Bob.

Here is a tool to do so:
http://xmr.llcoins.net/checktx.html

(somebody correct me if i am wrong)

No this is correct. The "individual view keys" you mentioned are called private tx keys in Monero. @MasterMined710, some more information can be found here:

How do I prove that a payment has been sent to a particular address?

https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/1860/how-do-i-prove-that-a-payment-has-been-sent-to-a-particular-address

How to prove my Monero balance to a world?

https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/1283/how-to-prove-my-monero-balance-to-a-world

P.S. There is a wealth of information on StackExchange.

Thanks guys, that's better than i thought it was.

"It doesn't prove you sent the amount, but it does prove that amount was sent (and received). – Luigi Oct 3 at 18:46"

So i guess it doesn't show the address it came from just that the amount was sent from someone to the address? The easy solution would be to generate a new address for each transaction.

Not as easy as having a public blockchain anyone could quickly verify but a good solution nonetheless.

I'll ask my other questions when i have more time. Thanks again.

You're welcome and that's correct.

I was searching for a good Monero wallet and wonder what the best option is. I did check https://getmonero.org/getting-started/choose but wonder if the full Monero client isn't too big for a windows laptop. The other options are light wallet but that one isn't updated for a while and the web wallet from https://mymonero.com/. There is also a Monero wallet available in the App Store and google playstore created by freewallet.org.

What advice do you guys have for me when I want a good working wallet.

If the amount is greater than $50 worth of XMR, then I'd suggest using the official full node/client (monerod + monero-wallet-cli). It should run on a windows laptop as long as you have enough disk space for the blockchain. For small amounts of xmr, mymonero.com is a good choice.

I actually just updated lightwallet a few weeks ago, but maybe I forgot to update that link. You can find latest release here:

https://github.com/jwinterm/LightWallet2/releases

Lightwallet has very limited functionality, but should be working now. Afaik the cli wallet, lightwallet, and mymonero are your only options. But, just FYI, you can the monero-wallet-cli in remote node mode, then you don't need to d download the blockchain (this is actually what lightwallet does under the hood).

Is there a secure node I can connect with to check my balance with simplewallet in the meanwhile?

Point your wallet to node.moneroworld.com, using the following commands:

(linux / unix-type)
./monero-wallet-cli --daemon-host node.moneroworld.com

(windows)
monero-wallet-cli.exe --daemon-host node.moneroworld.com

Some background:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/50gzro/add_your_vps_node_to_moneroworlds_network_of_open/

This is what I did while my blockchain was syncing locally, worked great.  Smiley

Monero/Kovri dev meeting note highlights - 2016-10-30:

https://hellomonero.com/article/monerokovri-dev-meeting-note-highlights-2016-10-30

Note:  There was a time mixup, so the meeting was more informal than it usually is.  So in addition to the small amount of actual notes, I've added some news/notes that I gathered from the various Monero discussion forums...

My only criticism of the first Monero video is that, considering it's meant to be an introduciton to Monero, it assumes quite a bit of background knowledge:

0.48: "Monero is dynamically scaleable" - this won't mean anything to many viewers
0.53: "The block reward will never drop below 0.3 XMR" - again, 'block reward' won't mean anything to those who are new to crypto. Also, Monero is suddenly referred to as XMR without any explanation.

Who is the target audience meant to be? Is it existing btc users, or those entirely new to crypto?  First rule of marketing is to know your audience.

Apologies if there are better places to post this, I just thought I'd put it here.  By the way, please see this as helpful criticism - I'm in awe of, and very grateful for, what the devs are doing - thanks!

[EDIT - ok, I just saw the roadmap for future videos in the series and see that no.6 will be "Monero for crypto-currency beginners". Great! So can we assume that the first video was aimed at current btc/altcoin users?]

I haven't been following this too closely but I believe that your criticisms are similar to what others have pointed out and will hopefully be addressed in this series of videos.  There has been and there will continue to be feedback from the community and I'm sure yours is welcome.

Besides the ambiguity of the block reward to those new to crypto, the 0.3XMR min block reward is incorrect if that is indeed how it was stated.  It is 0.3/min.  Again I'm sure this will be corrected going forward if this info will be included in the new series of videos.

Unexpectedly I did have some time to re-sync from scratch with the new client and it actually is quite fast to sync from scratch (a few hours). Thanks!

First, I notice that you have come into this thread trailing an advertisement for another coin in your arse-end. Always a sign of bad manners in my opinion.

Secondly, to answer your question, Monero (XMR) is the most trusted anonymous coin in the cryptocurrency universe, and ... (any other coin, including Nav's Anon) ... isn't.
