All you would have to do is pay the minner with bitcoins (if I understood it right)

I hooked up one of my mining machines this morning and I have 6 blocks generated so far.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them when they mature though. 

@vinced  Do you want first pick on a name?  I'll transfer you the 50 namecoins if you give me your namecoin address.

Yes the basic idea is just to add the domain registration type with a fee so a miner can decide to include it or not. The only problem would be miners self registering a shitload of domains.
The other option is to give a fixed number of Domain Credits per block and then have those transferred to the buyers address and register a domain with them, which could be updated to another domain for a smaller fee than to get a new domain.

So, a miner could register a shitload of domains, or they would be limited and the prices would vary wildly.
What about x**(ground(#blocks/210000) + 1)*y + z? It would be an ever faster increasing number of domains which could keep up with demand while keeping the domain names limited.

A GUI is on the development roadmap and I'm sure binaries will come available shortly.  What OS are you trying to run Namecoin on?  I have binaries for Ubuntu, 32 and 64 bit. BTW, Namecoin's build process is almost identical to Bitcoin so it shouldn't be too difficult.  Or at least, there is a lot of information on how to compile Bitcoin.

I hope to register a domain I dont have to wade through a godaddy nightmare . Just give me a field for entering a name I want and an address to send coins to and let me know if its available.

btw I will pay 5btc if someone can hold onto witcoin.bit or .btc domain for me and transfer it whenever an easy way to do so appears. Thats roughly the cost of a normal domain.

It is way too early to have a system like this "go live".  There are a lot of parameters and balancing measures that are well worth working out--effective standards result from careful thought and consensus, rather than simple experimentation.  Run this one as a test system for a while, identify what works and what doesn't, and then we will be better positioned to implement a standard that can achieve wide adoption.

I'll reserve Witcoin for you for 5btc.  Once you get namecoin setup you should be able to name_scan and see that I have the name reserved.  Although, I think I have to wait another 80 blocks in order to create my first name.  Namecoin is currently on block 40 and I have to wait until block 120 for the coins to mature.

How many connections do you guys have? I forwarded port 8334 but there are still only 2 connections.

By the way, they run parallel with bitcoin client without issue here. That is if you disable RPC server of bitcoin. Otherwise you get an "Address already in use" exception.

Same thing happened to me on ubuntu.

I compiled namecoind on linux  by just running 'make'. Not 'make -f makefile.unix' as you'd do to build 'bitcoind'. I also added 'rpcport=...' in the '~/.namecoin/bitcoin.conf' file to set an RPC port that doesn't clash with bitcoind that I have running. Note that the configuration file is still called 'bitcoin.conf' but it lives in '~/.namecoin'.

Haha, totally forgot about that even though I've been happily mining through the same old rpc port. Silly me. Anyway, solved my first block, yay! Connections = 8.

On Gentoo, I only had to change the Makefile to link with the dynamic boost libs. Other than that, it worked out of the box.

At least here, nameindex.dat seems empty and name_scan returns [].

I keep generating blocks and the wallet is getting bigger (in bytes) but the balance is stuck at 0. I couldn't find anything in the design doc about this either. Shouldn't the balance go up?
