If you use TOR, then it becomes very hard to establish link bitcoin (address) <-> IP address. This doesn't mean that you can't be identified as an individual (you're not anonymous in this sense).

Bitcoins are anonymous in the sense that data stored in blockchain actually means nothing (its only numbers). But as soon as some "objects" (wallet addresses, transactions, maybe even off blockchain transactions on exchanges etc.) can be linked to you, you become vulnerable. If somebody is interested in you, it can start tracking you starting with this "object".

Most people will sooner or later leave something on the internet that can be used to link some "objects" to them.

For example, If you want to spend your final bitcoins or if you try to sell them for USD and withdraw your money, you will probably have to reveal your identity (to an exchange or to a merchant etc.).

Mixers may store logs and they can be even forced to store them because they get orders from the authorities (courts etc.). Exchanges store logs by default and they can also be forced to reveal info about you or your transactions. In fact, more and more exchanges demand that you send them copies of ID cards etc.

The guy that sells you bitcoins via local bitcoins can also be tracked by similar means.

Most people do security mistakes sometimes (for example, they forget to use tor one single time, they make mistakes when sending bitcoins and they create transaction which accidentally "links" two different addresses etc).

So if somebody has enough resources and motivation, it is very likely that your identity can be revealed. The question is if you're important enough that somebody will use their (limited) resources to track you.

You must be in my mind.
Those thoughts were expressed yesterday in a private convo in irc with a user.
Regarding Tor, don't forget that everything is traceable, even Tor. Think "within Tor limits" bogus nodes running (either exit nodes or whatnot).

I really really want to talk to you online Cheesy

23.<tf2honeybadger> This has been happening for a long time

24.<tf2honeybadger> Cryptsy also had this issue a while back

25.<cryptowest> wish someone told me that, i just started pos and ended pow

26.<cryptowest> lel

27.<tf2honeybadger> Please do not repeat this to anyone else, by the way.

28.<cryptowest> ok

29.<cryptowest> thx

30.<tf2honeybadger> If they ask what I needed, say we had a question about the new wallet and PoS

31.<cryptowest> yeah i really had no idea about that

32.<cryptowest> nobody ever mentioned it

33.<cryptowest> even mp jason and mullick the coin guy from cryptsy

34.<tf2honeybadger> Well, yeah.

35.<cryptowest> they asked for proof of checkpoint server

36.<tf2honeybadger> Exchange staff don't want to talk about it because it involves coins being inaccessible, so it makes people scared.

37.<tf2honeybadger> I know

38.<cryptowest> well they wouldve told me

39.<tf2honeybadger> I talked to them every day now

40.<tf2honeybadger> and bitjohn too

53.<cryptowest> it seems like a common problem when i google it

56.<tf2honeybadger> Not really an option

61.<tf2honeybadger> Well

62.<tf2honeybadger> no

63.<tf2honeybadger> I'll try that again

64.<tf2honeybadger> yo

65.<tf2honeybadger> bittrex-richie is reporting the same issue as us

66.<cryptowest> ugh

67.<cryptowest> did you get it resolved?

68.<cryptowest> Sad

69.<tf2honeybadger> No

70.<tf2honeybadger> It's pretty bad.

71.<cryptowest> ha

72.<cryptowest> well those fucking derps in charge shouldve told me the wallet had other issues

73.<cryptowest> i had no idea i dont even know where to start with it other than the suggestions on google and such

74.<tf2honeybadger> The client mindfox and I worked on solved this issue I think

75.<tf2honeybadger> He said it would work

76.<tf2honeybadger> but I can't get in contact with him right now

77.<cryptowest> he never mentioned that issue

78.<cryptowest> he wanted to add coin control and all this stuff

79.<cryptowest> is all he told me

80.<tf2honeybadger> Yeah, like I said, we don't like talking about it because it means exchanges can't access coins.

81.<cryptowest> hes been working on it still

82.<cryptowest> well if you guys knew about it and didnt tell me then its pretty much sabotage so im not sure what to say

83.<cryptowest> ill try and contact mindfox asap hes still working on it

84.<tf2honeybadger> lolwut?

85.<tf2honeybadger> Mindfox and I were working on it

86.<tf2honeybadger> and we both knew

87.<tf2honeybadger> Then I left because of the foundation hiding shit

88.<tf2honeybadger> Not my fault you didn't know dude

89.<cryptowest> well you left

90.<tf2honeybadger> Yeah

91.<cryptowest> if mindfox knew he forgot

92.<tf2honeybadger> And?

93.<cryptowest> hes trying to do other things, add features

94.<cryptowest> dunno if he even knew it was an issue

95.<tf2honeybadger> So why is it our fault?

96.<cryptowest> i dont care whos fault it is, i dont bicker

97.<cryptowest> i will ask mindfox asap if he did know about it and knows a resolution

Guys, If you don't want this repeated to anyone else, maybe don't make it into a public pastebin?

lol, where di you find this? It must be from early May I think.
It was an issue with whitecoin wallet, which is the very reason I was against releasing it without prior testing but I was never heard.
So when it was released, after a few days the problem arose.
I was contacted by exchanges and we managed to resolve this issue. Smiley

Was that meant to praise my stubbornness to make something work properly or against me? Smiley

I found it on pastebin = http://pastebin.com/TKnxyQSS I suspect this group (not you) to be scammers.  And its really funny how many of their private convos are on pastebin if you are just willing to type in a keyword and press search, seems to me like this team is using public pastebin's  to communicate, either that or someone is leaking a lot there, maybe pastebin has an inside man in the group.

example:

I was talking in general. Bitcoin is anonymous compared to Credit Cards/Wire Transfers or other money transmittings.

To me the Darkcoin approach looks the most promissing to get true anonymity somewhen.

You probably won't get any kind of "true" anonymity from DarkSend. In current whitepaper there are too many edge cases when the blockchain analysis allows finding which output belong to which inputs with very high probability. DarkSend by itself really doesn't prevent reuse of addresses and doesn't prevent linking different addresses to the same wallet (user).

DarkCoin implements CoinJoin concept. For example, in some implementations of CoinJoin it is even possible to determine which outputs belong to which inputs by eyeballing:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/27rsv8/confirmed_blockchaininfo_shared_coin_is_broken/

DarkSend will make blockchain analysis just "harder", but still far from impossible.

The paper is a few months old - the spec has changed since then.

The inputs/outputs by eyeballing may occur in normal coinjoin, but do not apply for DarkSend where inputs are identical (denomination of 10 DRK).

http://explorer.darkcoin.io/tx/56b3b95b76995d3e4d3107cf753c8496493010f625fc04d971e9262d74e6a5a5

As you can see, inputs are 10-10-10 and the published analysis of input/output matching for coinjoin can't apply for DarkSend.

There are other weaknesses, like the linking of change, which'll need improvement.

Yes, thanks. I was just trying to tell him that CoinJoin doesn't apriori mean that things will be completely anonymous.

I think that I've already asked for updated whitepaper on DarkCoin thread.

Are you from DarkCoin dev team?

Linking of change addresses to other addresses (that were used as inputs to master transaction, for example) seems to be a very serious problem. It can completely deanonymize DarkSend transactions.

Any (published) plans on how to solve this? Just using multiple change addresses won't completely solve this issue. In combination with not leaving any DRKs on input addresses it may make blockchain analysis little harder, but this is still not enough (addresses can be reused for example).
