Ex-presidents charge like $150,000-$350,000 in which they have nothing important to say in the best case and in the worst case talk about ruining the United States. The only good government expenditure is a cut budget. I don't see why on their turf you could bump up your speaking fee to $20,000-$100,000. It is government and the way they waste money why not try.
To spruce up your talk you might want to call someone on the phone during the beginning of it an have them beam a bitcoin to you to show how it works.

Gavin, don't fear the CIA. You will find many open and forward thinking people in that world. Just don't try BS-ing anyone. The most important thing is the truth.

Whenever you speak with government employees, you must be very careful not to incriminate yourself. Don't casually tell them what you have done in the bitcoin world, what you bought, what you sold, what you do, etc. Speak in general terms.
Sounds paranoid? Maybe. But there are so many statutes on the book today, that we all commit "crimes" at least a couple time daily. And the cops and prosecutors cherry pick who they'll press charges against. So CYA.

Agreed. I'm actually somewhat terrified of the U.S. federal government and the crimes it can do against me. It's a sad state of affairs when the safest course of action in ANY situation, criminal or not, is to state "I want to speak to my lawyer before answering that question."

I'm not sure why you guys are startled about this. Think about it. Bitcoin is an ANONYMOUS currency if you want it to be. What better way for them to get funding to field agents without disclosing who their agents are? Also, might be a good way for them to track/find potential double operatives (at least for a while, anyway). They aren't going to stop it, that'd be something the NSA would try to do, IMHO...

If it's become illegal to buy Red Sox tickets and alpaca socks, then we're all doomed.

This is indeed a problem, and I sympathize with you. The founding fathers of the U.S.A. suggested that the government should fear it's citizens, not the other way around. When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

I am sorry Gavin is accepting Tax payer's money in order to do something like that.
If he accepts 3,000$ to give a presentation about bitcoin, what would he do for 300,000$ or 3,000,000$? Would he accept a full time job as trying to find a way to destroy bitcoin?
Why do CIA need to have someone explain bitcoin in flesh and bone? Can't they read Satoshi's white paper, source code and other information available on this forum?
I must say I am a bit disappointed by Gavin. I hope he reconsiders.
From now on, I'll be even more suspicious about any source code Gavin will publish.

Speech, body language, etc speak volume of information to CIA agents. The channel of speech is a hell lot faster than the channel of text.

Yeah, right. Especially when the speaker has to schedule a date for the presentation, take a plane to get there and so on... When is this presentation supposed to occur already? June? We are not even in May. And how long does it take to read doc and watch a video?

CIA is filled with analysts. Crypto, math, infosys, they've got some of the best of the best.
Some of the people who listen to the talk will write internal memo's using some sort of US centric threat metric. These memo's will be circulated, socialized and further analysis (data gathering) may be ordered up (depending on possible risk/opportunity idea holds).
Finally an official memo will be circulated to upper level govt. staffers in house and senate. Maybe, and I mean maybe, Obama will get a 20 sec briefing on it in the next year.

Probably the beginning of the end of Bitcoin as we know it IMO. It continuing to stay anonymous now is almost certainly not going to happen.

The CIA is obviously aware of Bitcoin already, otherwise they would not have contacted Gavin. What do you fear that they will do, exactly, to make Bitcoin less anonymous?
