Don't MSI 7950's and Sapphires exhaust out the back (through the bracket vents)?  If so, aren't the box fans on the wrong side of the the rigs?  Essentially it looks like you're blowing back into the exhausts.

Unless those box fans are facing the other way and you're actually pulling the hot air away... hard to tell.

This is the most common question I get asked...

Yes, I am blowing air into the same end that have the display ports.  This is because the fans are axial.  They simply suck air in from the side and then blow it directly over the heatsinks.  The air is then exhausted pretty much at random from that point although more comes out the end opposite the display ports than does the end with the display ports.  I tried flipping the cards around and blowing air into the end opposite the display ports and the temps were 10+ degrees higher versus the way I have it setup now.

The story is described here: http://www.reddit.com/r/litecoin/comments/1umydr/this_is_why_you_should_have_an_offsite_backup_my/

Quote
I had a house fire yesterday morning. It started in the attic and the fire department went in and took care of it. Unfortunately, they had to tear down the celing to get to the fire and hose everything down.
I lost all my servers and mining rig. The usb backups I had in my closet in onther room were also destroyed Sad

I set up an LLC and am running my mining business under it. I was able to get business insurance that not only covers all my mining hardware, but covers the lost revenue until the machines are replaced. Pretty nice to have.

Dang, almost exactly what I am looking for. Mind sharing some terms that might save me some google-fu time?

Thanks!

Did you have trouble getting your R9 290s running stable? I have nothing but trouble with 4x even with the latest drivers. BAMT won't go into Xorg with more than 1 card and Windows crashes as soon as I get to 3. 280x's work fine...

Everyone has trouble with 290's. If you aren't recompiling cgminer or using one with a pre-modified ADL library you probably won't get them to work.

The 290 has powertune 6, or something like that. The 280 uses powertune 5, which is what the 79xxx series used. Cgminer/bamt are built around powertune 5, so the calls and commands the 290 expects never come. This is why it'll bluescreen out on windows if you press "q" to quit.

280x's didn't work on BAMT for over a month, not unless you recompiled it with the 13.11 beta drivers yourself. The 290 situation is similar, but worse.

I haven't been at this very long yet, but have a little cluster going here. Total of about 62 GH/s. I'll be filling that USB hub up fairly soon too. Not a bad start.

Thanks for the info! I'm hashing with 1x 290 in Kubuntu (13.12 driver), and another 5x in an Ubuntu rig (13.11beta9.4). They get up and mine just fine, but crash the comp every time I press Q. Both systems are using the 3.7.2 pre-built cgminer right from con's website.

No prob, glad to help!

You aren't using a recompiled cgminer version? Do you have fan and temp displays or control? You are the first person I think I've seen who's got more than 4 working, though I figured it should be possible  Grin

If you don't have fan/temp control, have you seen this page yet?

I have 6 290's I've been waiting to set up, but I don't have enough 120v power just yet. Hopefully this weekend...

Yep, I'm using the pre-built CGMiner 3.7.2 right from Con's website. I get temp reading just fine. I can see the fan RPM and set the fan % just fine. I can read and set and change the core/mem clocks just fine. The only thing even slightly off is CGMiner reports the VDDC as 0.000, but that's not a huge deal cuz I can't undervolt them anyways. All 6 cards are PowerColor 290s with the stock BIOS.

(Oh, and if you know how to undervolt these 290 cards in Linux, that'd be great! I'm waiting patiently until I can find an editor and tweak the BIOS like I can with those 280x. <3 that VBE7)

hi all newbie here, just managed to finally setup my rigs. more to come. pics are from the start till now. more upgrades will come along the way.

just reached home with nice shiny boxes

unboxed !

1st setup on my main PC on Asus RIVE mobo while waiting for risers to arrive

all wired up, ready to fire it up

whoalla ! it works but too hot ! so brought some backup

Getting ready to build full time rig

fulltime rig fired up & running, just sitting on the table whilst thinking of a rig design for it

ah ha, found a IKEA shoe rack plastic box & it may workout

all 4 R9 290's fits nicely including mobo + PSU

another messy & busy day. Finally the powered risers have arrived !

2nd PSU to power the fulltime rig for future expansion, testing on the ground

it works now up on the table, all 7 cards working

power consumption for 3 R9 290's from Corsair Link software

Finally, more upgrade, found a home for full time rig

another angle, was really happy with the 48 bux i spent ! no cutting, drilling or whatsoever, everything sits nicely on the metal rack including the PSU's

4 wasn't enough as the mobo supports 5 cards ! took me couple of days figuring out on how to get 5 GPU's to be recognized in WIN 7, now it can support up to 8 GPU's under WIN 7

5 cards settled, running smoothly. will be cleaning up the wiring. had some delays due to AC plugs burning out on a single surge protector. rewired & now each PSU are pulling power from separate surge protectors but from same wall outlet. better not start a fire ! more wiring upgrades coming.

more upgrades are coming along the way when i have enough time. below are the list of my rigs :

- MOBO Asus RIVE
- PSU Cooler Master 850W Gold (will upgrade if needed) this PSU have not given me any problem, been using it for 5 years
- 16 gigs of  Corsair ram @ 2400 mhz
- CPU i7 3930K 6 Core LGA 2011 Clock @ 4.5ghz
- GPU Asus DCII GTX 680 : Clock @ 1345 mhz Memory clock @ 1598 getting an avg hashrate of 244 khash/s (collecting dust now, may sell it online)
- Case Cooler Master Cosmos
- Soundcard ROG Asus Xonar Phoebus
- 7 x Sapphire R9 290 cards
- MSI FM2 AXA G65 Mobo
- AMD A4 CPU
- Kingston 8 GB value ram (did not work, could not boot up even into BIOS will be changing to a better RAM)
- Thermaltake 3.0 Extreme CPU liquid cooler (more cooling for my main rig & space to fit gfx cards)
- 2 x AX1200i Digital ATX Power Supply — 1200 Watt 80 PLUS® Platinum Certified Fully-Modular PSU
- 20 x PCI-e express 1X to 1X/16x Riser Extender Card with extra power (on it's way now)
extra SATA power supply for PCI-e video card.
  USB 3.0 Cable Length:30cms

hashing away now headless on full time rig

Much thanks for the bump in the right direction! Now I got some thing to try. From what I've read, I can most likely pull it off... Hours of Googling did not lead me to this. THANK YOU

Finally getting around to posting my pictures.

8+MH/s Scrypt
200GH/s SHA-256 with a Bitmain S1

All located at a Data Center, nice quiet house.

Definitely not the prettiest thing, but I works. Full Modular is the way to go, and that escaped me in the beginning.

Quick question,

Running two 6950's at the moment. One from sapphire and the other is MSI.

One is at 70c stable the other is +-78c

Are these "okay" temps for these cards?

What is your opinion about those iceQ turbines compared to usual 3fan aftermarket coolers? Are they same quiet or not?
