BTC goes up, XMR goes up.
Lovely isn't it.

Certainly a nice change! Reminds me of some alts in 2013...
Which brings up a question:

I've been using both XMR's USD price and it's "BTC price" when following XMR (rather recently doing both). I had just been doing the latter, but since you can buy XMR on Bittfinex (is it?) for FIAT, I might as well consider that but how much? How do you all view this? Is 80% of XMR bought with BTC or ? Any stats available?

I wonder as BTC continues this rise, at some point people are going to start evaluating XMR more in dollars (as that is "stable" and perhaps more familiar to the masses), it will be available at more places for cash purchases, and so we are going to want to separate, as the initial determiner the BTC/XMR ratio, but that is just my thoughts right now. I'm open here, just wondering...

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/monero/#markets

Here you see all Monero Markets. You can buy Monero with fiat right now on Kraken , Bitfinex, BTER and Livecoin. For USD, EUR and CNY. As it looks Kraken might be most popular altho just started. I guess people are still careful because Bitfinex indecent few months ago. BTER is Chinese exchange where Monero is not so popular and Livecoin small exchange.

The BTC price is something of touchstone in the cryptosphere. But as more new money comes in I imagine the 'fiat' price will become more prevalent.

Another factor that is often ignored with regard to 'fiat' prices is the relative strength of those currencies - so the BTC price moves and people look for a reason but rarely look at what the USD or the EUR (etc, etc) is up to.

So, against the GBP or EUR you may say BTC's surge is helped by the relative wekness of the other pairs.
And while it may be heresy around here the USD is 'doing well' in forex at present, which makes BTC's current valuation even more impressive.

Of course, the real goal is not to value XMR against any other currency but against what it can be used for.

www.woobull.com/the-network-effects-of-volatility-and-liquidity-bitcoin-vs-other-payment-coins :

"2016 has been a bull year for privacy coins. Earlier this year we saw mooning of Monero which saw subsequent pumps in other dark-coins including ShadowCash and Navcoin. Then we witnessed a mega-hyped launch of ZCash which peaked at an astounding $5.3k per coin.
All of these coins are Payment Coins competing in the battle win the war to be General Money."

"I will be looking at the leading coins by market cap, namely Bitcoin, Monero, Dash, ZCash and ShadowCash"

"The liquidity of alt-payment-coins have been on a rapid rise in 2016, particularly in the case of Monero which if this year’s trend continues could match Bitcoin in just one year."

"The study concluded Bitcoin would achieve fiat level volatility by mid-2019"

"First up in our alt-payment-coin list is Monero, the biggest payment coin behind Bitcoin. Unfortunately Monero over its 2.5 year history has shown an increasing trend in volatility. We’ve seen a lot more speculators pushing the price around during its 2016 price breakouts. Here we see how keeping liquidity high and volatility low can be like pulling on opposite ends of a tug-o-war. Often high volatility attracts traders which then feeds an increase in liquidity.
Though Monero may be losing out on reduced volatility, it has a very important feature. Unlike Dash, ZCash and ShadowCash it is unique in that it is not a fork of Bitcoin, so it has a chance of winning the payment coin war by competitor implosion should there be a vulnerability in Bitcoin’s codebase. Monero is an excellent Bitcoin hedge in my opinion."

"Bitcoin’s lead in liquidity is not unassailable, Monero could match it in a year, Dash and ShadowCash in just over two."

"Low volatility is much harder to achieve and Bitcoin has a solid lead in this regard. No other payment coin is on track to catch Bitcoin"

"All of Bitcoin’s competitors tote features that Bitcoin is lacking – faster confirmation times and private payments. Both of these features will most likely be coming to Bitcoin as layer 2 protocols in 2017. If and when this happens, the battle for payments and general money will be fought solely on the playing field of economic network effects, that of liquidity and volatility. Bitcoin remains the standout contender in this regard."

Darkcoin is doing right two things: 1) Marketing 2) The funding of development (they do not come to cheap Scrooge McDuck to ask for donations).

By the way, tomorrow is the key day of 5th of January, how do you think it will change the price? Up or down?

What exactly has xdarkdashcoin released in the way of development recently? It seems like the donation model is working quite well in terms of Monero being on the leading edge of privacy technology, and it seems like dash had basically given up on darksend, instant x has been out for years, and evolution has been coming soon for like 18 months? Is dash evolution the new Monero GUI?

My point is that donation based funding have more risks than a project that is not based on donations in terms of financing.

Oh okay.
Anyway, what do you think will happen to the price due to RingCT implementation? Do you think Monero will tank hard?

My point is that donation based funding have more risks than a project that is not based on donations in terms of financing.

My point is that empirically this is not true. Bitcoin's rise wasn't funded by a (de)centralized money managing system controlled by insiders and early adopters. ETH is a bit of a counterexample, but they were basically 80% premined and their market value has been eroding. I don't think there's really enough evidence to declare one method better than the other, but based on the success of Bitcoin and Monero, I'd lean toward the volunteer/donation based approach as opposed to the cabal of insiders doling out funds.

That guy said he didn't buy Monero because it lacks a funding mechanism, like Dash. We just funded a $15,000 project in about 3 hours with the forum funding system. With results like that, who needs gimmickry? Monero's system is actually superior in terms of efficiency, as evidenced by the absence of failed vending machine projects.
