P.P.S. What does "Network Status - Disconnected" down in the lower left mean?  I'm not actually able to send/receive until the whole XMR Blockchain is downloaded maybe?  Just guessing here but if so that needs to be made more clear to the user I think...

It needs to connect to a node, either locally running or remote node I believe.

Okay... so... total doofus here then I guess LOL... how do I do that?

Bear in mind I've never yet run anything related to XMR on this Mac (except log in to Polo and/or MyMonero) so this is maybe a good test case of how the fancy new GUI download is gonna be perceived by Mr. Average Joe Public

Somebody walk me thru what needs to be done here...

The more convenient alternative is to go to the settings page and change localhost to node.supportxmr.com. Note that using a remote node is detrimental to privacy, but for testing purposes it's all right.

OK, did that.  It ran the "synchronizing blocks" for about three minutes and now is "Connected" Smiley

So, should be all good to test send/receive some XMR?  I'll try it later tonight and report back...

P.S. {Edit}

I'll assume that for the final release of the GUI package that the daemon will be included and set up to run seamlessly for the user...?  Expecting noobs to know enough to set it up for themselves -- never mind BUILD it first? LOL -- ain't gonna fly, out here in the real world :-P

P.P.S. {Edit #2} One thing I did just now however, *before* trying to send/receive with the GUI wallet, is I just *imported* the seed words from GUI wallet setup to MyMonero so that it's also "registered" to use in the future without doing transaction import (sorry Fluffy, LOL).  And FWIW it worked perfectly, MyMonero shows same address as GUI... all good to go Smiley

Yes, you should be able to send and receive XMR.

For the beta a daemon (monerod) will be distributed along the GUI (monero-core). The user would have to open the daemon though to get it started and fully synced. For the non-beta release there will be daemon integration, which allows you to control the daemon via the GUI.

I decided not to dip into my cold storage just to mess around testing this, LOL...

So, just quickly bought five bucks worth on Polo and I'm now sending to this new address as TEST.

First "glitch" :: the Payment ID generated by the GUI wallet was not accepted by Poloniex SEND page... said "invalid" for some reason.

It's very short: 74f2ee14a7cb8dc8 in this case.  Not what I'm used to seeing, is this something new Polo needs to update for, or something is wrong?

Anyway, sending with no ID worked... transaction is still 'pending' on Polo and has not hit the GUI wallet yet so I'll update here after it comes thru.

{Edit} Update: That was quick!!  It just went out from Polo and already popped up on the GUI screen!

Checking same address/seed in MyMonero shows NOTHING yet (as usual, I've noticed in the past that MM tends to take quite a long time to show correct balance and transaction info...)

SO... so far so good.  Amount I sent is not "unlocked" yet but I expect that's just a few confirmations?  Will check it after dinner and then try SENDING Smiley

Good to hear! =)
You could use the integrated address generated by the GUI if you need to assign the transaction from polo to a payment ID in your wallet. More info: https://getmonero.org/knowledge-base/moneropedia/paymentid

Note: Apple has ended their support for os x 10.9. Even though my build works for you I can't promise you that the official build will.

Edit: Clarification about Payment ID.

The short Payment ID has been around for a while, but the older is still supported. Unfortunately polo don't support the short one yet. But you could still use the integrated address generated by the GUI if you need to assign the transaction from polo to a payment ID in your wallet. Jaquee - Just a quick note to thank you for all the work you've done on the GUI. If you're ever around Boston I'll buy you a beer or three.

+1 Thanks Jaquee (and all the other hard working devs  Wink )

FWIW, I have not tried GUI beta yet, but I DL'd and installed the Daemon (Wolfram Warptangent) on W10 (don't hate me for that please  Cheesy) at the weekend. Worked faultlessly. Took about 10 hours to DL and sync blockchain on an Ultrabook with i5 Core, SSD and 4GB RAM. Blockchain is about 8GB. The longest part seemed to be the last few months of the blockchain. Seemed like there were more peers syncing from me and less peers with newer blocks available. I guess that is to be expected ??

Now that it's up to date, running as node takes up very little CPU overhead for those that are wondering, and is something I am very happy to do whenever it's switched on (>12 hours a day usually). It is not noticeable running in the background, no noticeable performance effect.

One thing to note was that my total usage was >100GB for the 'sync day', presumably as I was both syncing and others were syncing from me at same time. Not sthg I can do every day, so adjusted the limits in the daemon to levels I can cover (easily done). I guess that could be done on initial sync day, but might slow things down ??

The new wallet worked fine too once I figured out CLI (not hard). Really like the feature that you can choose the block to start refreshing from. On my not-so-great machine, it takes about 10 mins per 2 months of blocks when restoring using mnemonic seed. Did a few tx's on some new test wallets, all good, very easy.

Hoping this info might encourage more people who have not done so yet to attempt the process and fire up a node ... full GUI will be gr8, but what we already have is solid anyway  Smiley

Thanks again dev team, and apologies if this is not the right place for this post. Just wanted to share Wink

Oh, I know.  That's life for those of us who desperately try to cling to old software and operating systems past their prime, LOL

I'm used to it by now: there's never any promise stuff will continue to work.

Yet I just always want to ASK for 'backward compatibility' anyway because if nobody asks then nobody ever thinks it's important.  But IMHO it is important, FWIW...

And YES thank you for everything you're doing for the GUI and everything... a beer or three on me too, some day indeed Cheesy

For SSD this sounds way to much.  You were using computer for something else then syncing? Maybe syncing Bitcoin wallet also?

Nope! Nothing CPU or RAM heavy.
It started quicker, and then once I had a 'base' I was getting a lot of connections from peers who I was ahead of and this seemed to slow things down a lot (that was my guess anyway). Either that or my Ultrabook is not so Ultra! I upgraded the SSD in it too ... :/

Jaquee,

Just ran the Windows 32-bit wallet, set the node address to - node.supportxmr.com... getting the following Network Status message in the bottom-righthand corner - 'Wrong Version'.

Also on the setting pages there are 3 options - 'Daemon Address', 'Manage Wallet', and 'Close current wallet and open wizard' - there is no 'orange button' to the right of 'Manage Wallet'

Thanks,
