Anyone any thoughts on how likely a government level ban (China, US, whatever) is on XMR?

As it grows (in strength, threat and features) is it not more likely to be banned?
Here in the US software is protected by the freedom of speech, so theoretically Monero couldn't be banned here in the US (it's also allowed to skirt some laws because it's not a "real" currency but a digital asset). -- As for China I have no idea, although I can probably guess they'd ban it if it were to start get in their way (although that isn't to say that it would actually stop the Chinese from using it).

Being banned for being 'too secure' might have the opposite effect on actual usage than TPTB expected, it's a virtual endorsement of XMR security being superlative.

I doubt they'd be so stupid as not every jurisdiction in the world would follow, in any case. A ban by one (however large) country would be futile.

I think the freedom of speech issue relates to actually publishing the code and making it available, not using it.

So maybe you could publish software that is designed to download child porn and be protected, but the person running the software doesn't have that defense.

Same with Monero. Government could pass laws preventing individuals from using anonymous cryptos (or all cryptos).  Or, they could try and use established law to argue that anonymous crypto by its nature cannot comply with existing AML / KYC.

I'm here and publicly keep buying Monero right away. I don't fear from Chinese regulation, Monero will be adopted by more Assian people including Japanese and this will bring a nice price movement.

There is somewhere between a 99 and 101 percent chance that monero will be illegal someday. Plan accordingly. The good news is none of us have any monero. We all lost it in our boating accidents.

...

Why not register on Gemini or Bitstamp? Otherwise, LocalMonero or LocalBitcoins.

I registered on Gemini Monday, got verified Tuesday and sold some Bitcoin, and got the money today (Wednesday). Thanks for the tip!

No need for them to do that, they will just control the entry and exit points to fiat, e.g. the exchanges. Making it illegal wouldn't be in their interest, it would make it even harder to control, and basically advertise for it. It could still be traded on decentralised exchanges.

It's much more likely that they will enforce people to declare all crypto tradings than to straight outlaw a crypto.

MRO?

Heh heh... yah okay I got it, finally.

I'm fairly old-school Monerian (Monerite?) having first buy around 70 cents, I believe it was.  But it still took me a minute to remember: was just about to click over to coinmarketcap and search when the 'aha' moment clicked, LOL Cheesy

But why would I bring Monero onto my boat, it doesn't have the same stabilizing effect as storing my gold there?

I think for Monero the more common risk is theft, fires and floods at your Estonian mansion.

I know this is off topic but I value the Monero communities input on this.  Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, or Ripple, which one to hold? I was thinking Litecoin has the ability to gain the most and has a good team.

My crystal Ball is broken the last six months, sorry. Be careful with litecoin it is a mostly held chinese coin with some monster bag holders. They played HUGE and I mean Trump HUGE (lol) ponzie schemes with LTC until I believe it was banned. I guess Ponzies are legal in china or some such thing. Smiley

Ripple of course is centralized and controlled P&D's and they seem to be carefully building MC after their scam Cap creation.

ETC may someday take over if ETH's Centralization or just plain incompetent Dev team tanks it.

Aside from XMR, my top pick, I'll admit I'm bullish on BTC even though it's not fungible and I'd rather not use it. But I see it going way up.

I have a lot of other small holdings and honestly I'd be embarrassed to mention many of them. You could print 100 coin names on a sheet of paper, take 10 darts and throw them at the paper, and 7 of those 10 are going to make money...some more, some less. They could be (and probably are) junk coins...they'll still make money. Would I use them? Never. But they'll make money.

Now when you find a coin that actually solves real-world problems now and works well now and faces a present and growing demand...that's where you drop anchor. Ahoy, Monero.

So boys...

What's it gonna be a slow drift down to ~0.02/~100usd or another correcting spike up to ~0.05/~250usd?

We will get to 0.05 eventually of course, but this year or next year is the question.

Probably a slow climb to around 150-200$. But it all depends, more (bad) news about regulation and making Monero illegal would probably give a faster growth as any publicity usually inflates prices.

The problem with crypyo is that the community as hole is not so big at the moment and every strong and big government can easy banned everything they want wright now and the people around the world will not react, only if something happens with bitcoin will make attention, most of the people around the world has never heard about monero. One thing is sure we do not live in liberal world, we live in a world in which the government power is increasing  every day with regulations and laws, wright now every big government has hundreds of people thinking how to control the crypto world thats the main threat.

Might depend on when the Dash price comes down.  As far as public perception goes, Dash is XMRs most important competitor : similar Market Cap size and privacy-centric.

If confidence in Dash falters, then Monero will benefit directly, in a big way. When that happens,  previous moves may seem relatively small. The attack vector information has not even started to filter down to the public money.

I think we will hit .03+ in the coming weeks - hoping to see it in a few days - but who knows... this is crypto!
