No, they have a very large office in a building in Beijing's Silicon Valley, full of chip developers, hardware developers, software developers and sales people working hard at dealing with a very large demand. Let's hope they have some new announcements coming up soon ... That is encouraging. Thank you for the info! M

I certainly don't want anyone to leave the pool but at what point does it make sense for someone to solo mine?
I will never have enough CPU power to even remotely consider it but if you look at the last 15 blocks we found Cobra found 5 of them and Block mines found 4. They have very impressive hash power but I wonder if having those block rewards all to yourself would be more in the end than sharing it with the pool. On average it seems like each of them find one at least once a week.

It only makes sense if you really don't need the BTC...seriously, the amount of hash needed to find that many blocks consistently is not what most of us can afford to "front." The investment, and overhead, is huge. We mine to pools because the end result is far better for our long run, which is to accumulate BTC at a consistent rate for future security. I have solo mined. I have found more than one block doing so...but that was back "in the day" when you mined with a laptop CPU. Just before I switched my pool over to Kano some months ago, I put my hash on cksolo for six seeks just on GP...and, of course, came up empty. If mining is a hobby (and, if you pay for power, it could be an expensive one), then go solo.

Their ratio doesn't represent the same as if they were solo mining. It is the total hash rate of the pool that contributes to the 'luck' the pool has and the average frequency of blocks. Or that is my understanding. Yes, they could solo mine, but then their 'luck' we be the same as a 'pool' that had their combined hash rate. So they might get a block a month or something like that. With the pool, because it is higher hash and more blocks they probably make more than if they were to test their luck solo.

Solo vs. Pool mining: your expectation is the same, your variance is not. It's higher for solo. Mine on!

Variance is a mofo. A pair of 95 percent cdf is 1 in 400 but. If you solo mine. That is crushing.

I certainly don't want anyone to leave the pool but at what point does it make sense for someone to solo mine? ...
Solo mining for a small miner (less than 10PH) is high risk gambling. The smaller the hash rate, the even higher the risk becomes, though of course the possible loss reduces also. 10PH currently averages about 4.5 days per block. But if you e.g. hit a 300% block (which is expected average 1 in ~20 blocks you'll find) that would be about 2 weeks between your solo payouts ... with 10PH If instead you only had 1PH, a 300% block becomes well over 20 weeks - since difficulty is expected to rise over that time frame and thus 300% gets harder and harder as that 20 weeks progresses. Bottom line is, if you are a gambling addict, risking a large amount for a possible big OR small OR zero reward, then solo is for you Otherwise, stick with the intelligent choice, and mine here
