1041  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian ruble is scam on: July 23, 2023, 03:03:37 AM
But the EU's economy is not much better, if not worse, than Russia's. If the ruble is a scam, then all currencies in this world are government sponsored scam schemes.
How are they similar or worse though? Which part EU are you talking about here? Some countries in the EU seem to have different issues from one another, like energy, climate, and so on if those media reports can be trusted. But I don't think it is remotely similar to what Russia gets from sanctions etc.

I think fiat in general is susceptible to manipulation regardless of who issues it.
1042  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which wallet is the most suitable option when considering a switch from Ledger? on: July 22, 2023, 04:26:04 AM
In the last two days I completed two transactions slightly exceeding a thousand dollars and my mining fee with bc1 addresses set at default suite settings --- ended up being around 45-55 cents for each transaction.  Fast too.  Had about a dozen confirmations in less than an hour on both transfers.
I believe transaction fees are independent of what software you use to make them most of the time. As long as the mempool condition is the same, any decent wallet should give you the same recommendation fees (not to mention you can change it yourself most of the time). So I don't think a cheaper transaction fee is a key feature to select your HW wallet. Maybe things will change if too many HW releases with exclusive software that doesn't allow you to change fees. CMIIW.
1043  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: First Criminal Case Involving Attack on a Smart Contract Operated by DeX on: July 22, 2023, 04:13:38 AM
I shake my head if you of all the people in the forum support the whitelisting and the imposing of KYC on self custodied wallets.
I think he meant to say that regulators don't need to introduce any new rules since they can just force DEX or any other platform to implement KYC or whitelisting. If they are popular and the owner is known, for example, I guess some threats could work and potentially force them to do what the government wanted. I believe DEX and self-custody wallet is not the same in this regard, I doubt they can force people to KYC to use Electrum for example. CMIIW.
1044  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Tornado cash and others mixers on: July 22, 2023, 03:51:02 AM
When you mentioned IP filter, I was thinking if it's the same mixers that makes provision to browse their sites privately with Tor incorporated?
I'm not sure I understood your question correctly, but I was referring to clearnet IP filtering. Stuff like blocking visits from countries or VPN IPs and so on. I do know one or two mixers that do this on their clearnet website but most people can still use ToR to access their services. So yeah, some mixers do recommend users to use ToR and apply IP filtering on their clearnet website.

Well, since they have the power to do it, we cannot say that they haven't freezed an innocent person's account. As I always say, all are sinners in the eyes of the government. They might decide to resurrect your previous sins in order to implicate you presently.
I guess that's true. At the very least you can opt not to use any centralized service if you want to avoid them.
1045  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto as Gambling: The UK government has laid to rest the controversial bill on: July 22, 2023, 03:31:43 AM
I think the reason people misunderstand between crypto and gambling is because of its volatility as well as the risk of investing in altcoin projects.
I guess we can give that leeway if we're talking with the average joe. But I don't think a government body can be that careless and just assume everything is the same thing. Even if they focus on altcoin instead of the Bitcoin market, I don't think it is that hard to see some differences between gambling and their high-risk trading process.

That being said, I think UK in general is more 'friendly' toward crypto from the news I've seen shared on this board for the last months or so. I believe they see potential in regulating the market/crypto for their own benefit instead of outright banning them or deterring people from trading crypto. CMIIW.
1046  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Any thoughts on Web5 vs Web3? on: July 22, 2023, 03:18:00 AM
It's a real thing as far as I know but the idea is still being structured. IIRC, it was originally announced late last year or early this year by Jack Dorsey shortly after the finalization of the twitter buyout deal. Prior to the announcement of the creation of the web5 idea, there was no official web4 concepts that were live.
Looks like it has been in development since 2022[1]. I guess the main difference will be the decentralized web applications, although I don't see how much it will differ since there is no demo or something similar. As of now, I don't think it will bring benefits to the Bitcoin ecosystem in general if the technical requirement to use them is somewhat high. Some people don't level feel comfortable with a self-custody wallet, I doubt anything more decentralized and technical will attract them.

1047  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance adds support for the Lightning network on: July 20, 2023, 11:39:04 AM
Looking at the other supported networks, the actual Bitcoin network only costs 0.00005BTC or around $1.52. ANd if I'll be withdrawing, I'll only have two options and these are the two and not with any other networks.
That should be expected no? Bitcoin is only on the Bitcoin network, or lightning if you use it. Other chains are not native BTC, you're withdrawing a wrapped token which adds additional risk to your withdrawal. Not to mention it is not universally supported by other exchanges, at least for now. Even if they do support it, you should never use it since you're just exposing yourself to additional risk for a relatively small benefit.
1048  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Tornado cash and others mixers on: July 20, 2023, 10:09:29 AM
What filter are you talking about?
Not one AML provider will work with a mixer, because it will show everyone that these providers have very little efficiency. Then after that, a criminal case will need to be opened against the AML provider Smiley And the mixer is not to blame for anything. Grin
Well, anything really. Using a database from a chain analysis company to filter out addresses so they can block out transactions, IP filter, and so on. I'm responding to the question of how a mixer might defend itself from government scrutiny. I don't think any mixer is going to implement them though, since the cost to run them is likely expensive and it might affect their branding too.

Yes US government keeps coming to sites who related to crypto and then seizing them and freezing their crypto holding at the end of the day they can sell it  Cool
They always do that to criminal cases afaik. I don't think they will freeze people's assets blindly on exchanges, for example. Unless of course, they claim it was related to money laundering or other criminal cases. CMIIW.
1049  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin Magazine Doesn't Limit to 1 Acct Per IP Address? on: July 20, 2023, 09:41:34 AM
Update: Bitcoin Magazine as of July 14, 2023 decided to ban all my accounts. I milked it while it lasted.
So, did they give you any reason as to why you got banned? I guess it should be expected sooner or later but maybe something change. Who knows, maybe you're not the reason they decide to ban multiple accounts but some bot owners make them lose their money with this 'exploit'. At the end of the day, any abuse is likely going to get you banned. Hopefully, you'll find other works that pay you well without having you resort to abuse or cheating.
1050  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 10% discount on Ledger hardware wallets on: July 20, 2023, 09:11:40 AM
There was recently a discount on color Ledgers so Ledger has been sending loads of marketing emails about that. I am not sure if the promotion has ended.
Looks like it is still live for now, according to this page[1]. Makes me wonder if there is really a demand for colored HW like this since I assume people can just mod their own with stickers and stuff like that. This doesn't solve their last problem afaik, people should not buy them just because they get cheaper.

1051  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Generating private keys on USB flash drive bootable Linux on: July 20, 2023, 08:58:19 AM
Now the question is what guarantees all of us that when we use these tools offline they do not just go and upload the data that was generated? Like after getting connected with the internet at some point.
Another option is to not use tools like that and stick with community-proven tools like Electrum to generate your wallet/address. I don't think you really need additional tools to randomly create a new address or wallet, to begin with. Sure, it might add extra steps, but if security is your concern I doubt you'd think that's a huge problem.
1052  Economy / Economics / Re: Population: Economic strength or weakness on: July 19, 2023, 12:27:24 PM
I believe some people tend to look at one point of view and believe that is true, and then ignore or try to build arguments to prove the other point of view is wrong, hence why the debate that you saw happened. There is generally no right answer since context will always matter. At the end of the day, I guess most of us know that the country/government/community itself is the one who will likely decide whether their population is going to be a problem or not.

How do you think these developed nations will fill vacancies in their nations and get cheap labor if the population of these developing nations is reduced?
Are you talking about countries like Japan? Maybe they can change their work culture, encourage people to get married, accept immigration from other countries as long as they are skillful, and so on. The point is they can always think of a solution based on their condition. You can't just copy and paste what works in one country to another one, especially if they are culturally different.
1053  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Anyone interested in starting a card grading service using blockchain techs? on: July 19, 2023, 12:08:30 PM
Well everything is built ontop of already open sourced technology and doing a ethereum Proof-of-Authority fork but in order to do this and make it proper I need some nodes or 'board-members' to hop on board who are familiar with hosting. Smiley`
What exactly are the roles of blockchain here? To make it challenging to modify the data? Maybe you can post more details on how the platform will generally work so potential customers can also learn about it. If I'm not reading it wrong, the card grading service helps people judge the value of a collection and help potential buyers to confirm if the collection is fake or not (plus its quality). Do correct me if I'm wrong. As long as it doesn't involve any new tokens you'd probably see some demand here and there.
1054  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: help please, i can't find my funds on: July 19, 2023, 11:23:34 AM
Because i can not remain that much active to keep tracking the activities of this wallet or maybe i have to follow some investigator from Twitter.
You can set up a cold wallet with Electrum on one of your devices that is never connected to the internet, store the seed somewhere safe and you'll be free from any hijack. At the very least, you already know that using a pirated OS is risky so as long as you don't use any pirated software then there should be no problem. Follows the suggestion to verify the file and so on above. I believe you can avoid what happened to OP as long as you have good security practices.

I don't think following some security news is that difficult either, just visit this forum once in a while and see if there is any news related to any exploit. Most of the time people will post new threads if something major has happened.
1055  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Tornado cash and others mixers on: July 19, 2023, 11:07:07 AM
Avoiding crimes such as laundering with mixers lie in the hands of the mixers to control because if they don't control it, when the government gets involved, it doesn't really go well.
I guess we can only ask them how they plan to avoid government scrutiny, and if they have a plan to implement a filter or something similar. But then again there is no ideal solution since some customers might get turned off by their rules. There is also a potential for abuse since we can't easily dispute their claims if they decide our funds are "tainted" and unsafe to mix. I guess people should realize that everything is never gonna be safe and plan accordingly or use other tools if they can't find any good mixer for their purpose.
1056  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Presidential candidate announces plan to back the US dollar with Bitcoin on: July 19, 2023, 10:57:57 AM
In all cases, if he wins, I doubt he will ever implement what he planned and what he has spoken in the past about Bitcoin.
If I remember correctly, some US states already plan to hold some Bitcoin to store their wealth. I do recall seeing some news talking about more or less the same thing, so while it is mostly a marketing ploy, the fact that some government bodies or politicians utter such words means that crypto is a good market for them. Hopefully, this doesn't turn into another situation where they claim one project is a security one after another when the regulation is unclear though.
1057  Local / Ekonomi, Politik, dan Budaya / Re: Dengan adanya crypto apakah ekonomi anda terbantu? on: July 18, 2023, 11:56:09 AM
1058  Local / Topik Lainnya / Re: Recovery akun Bitcointalk on: July 18, 2023, 10:59:15 AM
Username agan sebelumnya apa? Kalau kedepannya ketahuan bakal kena ban lagi.
1059  Local / Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) / Re: [INFO] Informasi Phishing, Malware, Virus Dst (WAJIB BACA) on: July 18, 2023, 10:28:46 AM
-snip-
