1161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / "there's no value for ETH in ethereum as of today" is wronger - Vitalik on: September 11, 2018, 10:16:10 PM

Vitalik Non-giver of Ether

@VitalikButerin
So I realized that the argument that "there's no value for ETH in ethereum as of today" is even wronger than I thought.

The reason is that as of today, abstraction is not even implemented in ethereum. There are clear efficiency advantages to using ETH as a means of paying for gas: it's already baked into the protocol, zero gas cost to pay for gas (so no "tax tax"), network protocol supports it...

It's not fair to rely on hypothetical future features to argue against something, and not admit *planned* future features as arguments in its favor.

Also, ETH is the only medium of exchange on ethereum where the gas cost of transactions is 21000, and not ~40000.

Abstraction would change this, but as I said, we have no active plans to do full abstraction.

Those aren’t hypothetical future features. I’m sure you know it’s not unheard of that mining pools get compensated out-of-band for including transactions in blocks

Oh sure, but that's still something extra that you have to do; it's not a default interface. Including a gas price into 4-8 bytes of transaction data that cost you nothing, on the other hand, is super-convenient.
1162  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-09-11] Stern Professor Says Bitcoin Will Hit Zero After 70 Percent Drop on: September 11, 2018, 10:08:04 PM
I had never heard of this news site. I had never heard of this university. I had never heard of this teacher. For what reason will I give any importance to what he speaks without demonstrating any mathematical proof that has irrefutably passed through the academy?

The value of Bitcoin will only reach zero if it is irreversibly hacked. If someone finds an absurd flaw in the protocol.

Otherwise, it will always have some value since it is a solid project and with great utility. People who have not bothered to study the protocol try to give crude hints like this.
1163  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: My experience day trading - no moon shots on: September 11, 2018, 09:54:33 PM
This strategy is interesting. But would you have a few more numbers to prove its effectiveness? The problem is that the price in certain moments shoots and all the profit obtained in a week can go away in a single day.

But in bot management this is the logic and this provides liquidity to the market.
1164  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A blockchain similar platform with Ethereum on: September 11, 2018, 09:35:55 PM
There are several reasons why the price of Ethereum is falling. Few of them are related to the platform itself. The market as a whole is having difficulty pricing the prices of its assets correctly. Today we have over 600 projects that have collected Ethereum in their ICOs. Some of them have raised billions. They need to sell ethereum to maintain the activities of their projects and need to sell to try to keep the price of their assets at some value.

What we are seeing is a highly speculative market driven by fear, irrationality and necessity.

I believe there are better proposals than Ethereum, but they are still far from being tested at large scales. Ethereum is still the safest and most tested smart contracts project among all.
1165  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Conventional Banking and Blockchain Technology on: September 11, 2018, 09:20:05 PM
Good text, well explanatory. I believe that the best feature for a quick understanding of Blockchain is decentralized verification. When you have an account at the bank, it means the bank has full control and sends you information about your balance.

In Bitcoin this one-handed control does not exist. Each party must be independent and the consensus responsible for such checks.
1166  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-09-11] Chinese Cryptocurrency Traders Use Tether and VPNs to Bypass Ban on: September 11, 2018, 05:42:15 PM
This is very interesting to know. There are several reports that p2p negotiations still occur naturally. If Bitcoin really proves like a currency that not even a dictatorship can stop, its future will be brilliant. Decentralization is the most important part of all cryptocurrencies.
1167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: what is the best airdrop ever? the tokens and price awarded to participats on: September 11, 2018, 05:11:02 PM
I believe the most successful so far was Ripple, Stellar, BCH and Tron. For all these projects still remain among the top 20 after a long time.

There are thousands of airdrops that are just distributions of ERC20 tokens. This is not useful at all. An airdrop to have any future, it needs to be with an immediate mainnet solution. Tokens are like casino chips, only have speculative utility. It doesn't provide so much utility in the future.
1168  Economy / Speculation / Re: OKEx Founder Star Xu Arrested by Shanghai Police. Bitcoin price will be collapse on: September 11, 2018, 05:04:11 PM

CHINESE POLICE HOLD OKCOIN CEO FOR ‘INVESTIGATION’ OVER ALLEGED FRAUD LINKS

The CEO of Chinese cryptocurrency exchanges OKcoin and OKEx is in police custody over alleged fraud, local media report September 11.

As multiple sources on social media claim in addition to Sina News, Star Xu is currently assisting officers in Shanghai investigate fraudulent activity on the part of WFEE coin, of which he is a shareholder.

Various posts show photographs of Xu at a Shanghai police station, albeit seemingly free to move and without signs he is under arrest.

According to Twitter resource cnLedger which translated the source material, a preliminary investigation concluded Xu’s Shanghai-based company did not have links to illegal activity.

“The alleged fraud was not conducted in Shanghai but in Beijing, therefore documents will be handed to Beijing police,” it confirms.

However, several investors argued that the team behind the WFEE coin which they purchased was based in Shanghai, and Xu is WFEE’s shareholder.

Sina News: Star Xu, founder of OKCoin/OKEX, is being investigated by Shanghai police. According to Lu Jun, officer at the local PD, Xu was suspected of fraud accused by investors. SH police has accepted the case.

NO BIG DEAL?
Police took Xu September 10 to help with the investigation, with the maximum custody limit of 24 hours due to run out at 10 pm local time Tuesday.

The move comes amid an ever-tightening regulatory stranglehold over cryptocurrency activity in China. In August, Bitcoinist reported on how a fresh tranche of offshore exchanges would be added to the country’s Great Firewall in a bid to stop any form of cryptocurrency trading. Certain activities classed as “promotional” were also subject to a crackdown.

Like many international exchanges this year, OKEx has pursued an aggressive expansion policy, in July signing a deal with the Malta Stock Exchange to launch a tokenized securities platform.

Outside China-focused circles meanwhile, news of Xu’s predicament appeared to raise few eyebrows.

WhalePanda, the well-known commentator on cryptocurrency, argued that China’s diminished importance for the industry meant that legal difficulties concerning its businesses were not the market movers they once were.

1170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Vitalik Buterin: Crypto, Blockchain Space Won’t See ‘1,000-Times Growth’ Again on: September 11, 2018, 03:14:40 AM
Even gold may eventually grow 1000% against the dollar.

The issue is context and understand how the price of an asset is formed. It's always a pair. That is, the valuation or devaluation of something occurs in relation to this pair.

Today the big comparison is BTC-USD. Usd is very valued these last months for several reasons. In the near future it may suffer great devaluation. Dow Jones has had a strong appreciation, may also be corrected.

So it's not just a matter of the cryptos being highly valued. If they are adopted and have a truly relevant share in the global market, we will have several assets being valued at 1000% relative to usd.
1171  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 11, 2018, 02:46:02 AM
Monero is down right now like everything else. I'm checking MA50 with 4hours graphic, prices still hasn't touched ma50. If it goes below 0.01640 btc, it may go down more :/ I hope it recovers from there.

XMR did not lose so much in comparison with some other cryptocurrencies which are in the top-20. Moreover, Monero managed to show his best potential - recently it was growing well.
Monero is still very difficult to use by an ordinary user. The big chance for Monero is now. With the speculative market down. It should still prove useful as the main anonymous currency. The king of the dark net. The free currency.

However the available wallets are still very bad. The fees are high. And few use as a currency. Still, I believe in the project, but it's sad that they are wasting the best chance they could have.
1172  Other / Meta / Re: Partially decentralised moderating on: September 11, 2018, 02:35:03 AM
I did not like that idea. I believe that all point systems like this, users can gamify. That is, they would try their best to defraud the system for its own benefit. They could create thousands of bad topics, out of rule, for a single user to earn thousands of points.

So he would use the profile to exclude topics he did not like, service topics competing with his services, or topics from people he does not like.
1173  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you remember Bitconnect? I lost 3500 dollars in this pyramid! on: September 11, 2018, 02:27:09 AM
Lending is always very complicated. The point is people do not just want to buy something and wait. They want something that offers 100x per day. Even without fully understanding how that would be possible. Ignorance of the basic knowledge of economics and how markets work is absurd.

All the projects that promote great shows, big events. With artists, musics and lots of smiles, they will eventually be shown as scans.
1174  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Funding for ICOs Drops to the Lowest in 16 Months on: September 11, 2018, 02:14:12 AM
Bloomber

Is the initial coin offering boom over?

Startups raised just $326 million in August, the smallest amount since May 2017, according to data complied by Autonomous Research. That compares with about $3 billion on average during the first three months of the year. ICOs using the Ethereum blockchain are seen as one of the main catalysts for sending Ether’s price surging last year. Now they’re being blamed for its decline as some of those projects cash out to cover expenses and on concern this year’s cryptocurrency bear market will drag out.
1175  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-09-10] CNBC The Winklevii launch the Gemini Dollar stablecoin on: September 10, 2018, 11:34:54 PM
there are a couple potential positives though. so many exchanges hold lots of USDT---if anything ever happens to tether, we'll see huge losses across the ecosystem. i think it would be healthy to see that risk spread around to some other exchanges. the other thing is, i've never been able to register with gemini because of their ID requirements. it'd be funny if i could hold GUSD to ride out downtrends despite them refusing me as a customer.

I'm not sure if that's really a positive. You're basically infecting the market even further with something (stable coins) you don't want to see gain traction in this ecosystem.

In the end, all stable coins have one thing in common, which is that they aren't actually pegged to the dollar. The only thing that makes these coins worth a dollar is that you can go to the issuer to sell them for $1 a pop. The stable coin itself nothing more than a regular token with a promise of the issuer tied to it. In other words, you'll be able to hold GUSD just like how you can hold USDT.

1 USDT is currently worth +$4 USD at WEX. Just shows you how worthless these pegs really are.

Not all Stable coins work like this. Some are trying to innovate by offering a system of weights. This turns out to be very risky and requires even more research and testing.

But if any of these projects succeed, it would mean that the anchoring could be in any other asset or something unique based only on balance.

I sincerely believe that a Stable coincides with some universal anchorage, based on a mathematical model, would be very useful.
1176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Smart contracts are soon available for all projects built on WAVES!!@ on: September 10, 2018, 11:27:53 PM
Whitelist voting. This function seems to be very interesting. But how different is this function from the one offered by the NEM platform?

I think waves are an interesting platform, but I honestly do not know if it presents something totally unique and innovative. I know little of the platform, so I have this impression that it is only a shortened version of what is already offered by Ethereum, Nem and Stellar.
1177  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Lack of useful dApps for ETH and other Cryptos on: September 10, 2018, 06:01:45 PM
It still takes many steps to actually use a dApp. You need to convert fiat to ETH. You must transfer ETH to the platform you will be using. This all generates a cost.

And so far, we have no dApp that is revolutionary and do something impossible to do using another centralized platform. Ethereum still has several problems to solve and only when it is a PoS platform will we have quality dApps.
1178  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another day. Another confusion. Another show of incompetence by media. Another.. on: September 10, 2018, 05:52:15 PM
So it's just a need to make clear what they are actually trading. I have to say that there is really a lot of confusion about what this was, and to this day it is not perfectly clear. But if it is not an ETF, what risks are involved?

"Bitcoin Tracker One - SEK is an open-end Exchange Traded Note incorporated in Sweden. The ETN is denominated in SEK and provides investors with access to the returns of the underlying asset, US Dollar per bitcoin, less investor fees. The average USD exchange rate of bitcoin from the exchanges:- Bitfinex, Bitstamp and GDAX provides the underlying reference price which is converted into SEK."
1179  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum Mining Now Close to Unprofitable, so what is best thing to do now? on: September 10, 2018, 05:47:18 PM
Soon you will have neither profit nor loss. As Ethereum is slowly being prepared to become fully POS. I think that in the middle of nowhere, any small miner must calculate this possibility and get out of the mining. It does not seem to me that this activity will have any chance of being profitable next year for people who pay high prices for electricity.
1180  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Can Be More Efficient Than Bank Transactions on: September 10, 2018, 05:41:14 PM
Bitcoin's big problem is still the difficulty of converting fiat into Bitcoin without needing to rely on a third person. The fee is really high in a lot of situations, but if it's really comparing all the costs involved, it's a lot cheaper.

To use the credit card in a business transaction between people two people from different countries, several fees are paid. And it is necessary to use the services of 2, 3 institutions in the least.

With Bitcoin the transmission is direct, fast, easily identifiable and auditable. Bitcoin will be a breach of the walls between countries long before it is used to pay for a coffee or to be used in a snack machine. A person from Sudan can get a cell phone from a Chinese company without having a bank account. This is how Bitcoin will be the disruptor of the entire banking system.
