Why does this happen with religion and not with Javascript

Paul Graham clearly hasn't been on proper Javascript forums. I'd rather debate midterms with TECSHARE than camel case and 4-space tabs with so called web developers.

How about PHP vs Perl?

C# vs Java?

Linux vs Windows?

iPhone vs not iPhone?

I've been around many tech forums and Bitcointalk is decidedly tame compared to many of those.

Well... He founded one of the most important "forums" about technology, HackerNews.com. And he has this other text about programming languages Beating the Averages

To enter in a forum about programming, and to participate in the discussions, you need to have some kind of knowledge about that subject. And it can not be just knowledge of "feeling." You probably need to read books based on academic research.

763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: HUGE PROBLEM, LOST MASSIVE AMOUNT OF BTC. 100 BTC is Reward on: November 30, 2018, 03:56:31 AM
This is all very strange...But I do not think the OP is trying to fool anyone by sending malicious files. He could put the file directly for download if that was the case. Or he could send it to anyone who asked. However, he asks for evidence that anyone offering to help demonstrate on video how he will recover. But, it may be that the OP is trying to trick somebody or do some kind of crime with that request for help.

To offer 100BTC, which today is worth almost half a million dollars, I believe it has something like 5000BTC in this wallet. I have tried to find some wallet that had been opened for the last time in 2016, but I did not find it, maybe someone can do it. The video was posted by a personal profile. In a few minutes, it is possible to discover the profile on facebook and some other social media. In addition to some news related to MLM scam, That may be about the same person or just a coincidence about the same name.

But there is a high possibility that this can be an elaborate attempt of a scam or is an attempting to recover the funds that were obtained with a MLM/scam. So anyway, since the OP does not want to write in a clearer way telling what actually happened, and did not try to use the help offered by gmaxwell, I could only thank him for making Bitcoin more rare and valuable.

If you sent it to an exchange, and they mix the coins without separate for you, you lost one of the coins. There is no possibility to be sending and receiving back the two coins indefinitely. You should try to resolve this situation with Kraken, they offered this service and it worked for most people that have used.

This text from Paul Graham about those virtual and forum discussions related to politics is awesome.

http://www.paulgraham.com/identity.html

Keep Your Identity Small

I finally realized today why politics and religion yield such uniquely useless discussions.

As a rule, any mention of religion on an online forum degenerates into a religious argument. Why? Why does this happen with religion and not with Javascript or baking or other topics people talk about on forums?

What's different about religion is that people don't feel they need to have any particular expertise to have opinions about it. All they need is strongly held beliefs, and anyone can have those. No thread about Javascript will grow as fast as one about religion, because people feel they have to be over some threshold of expertise to post comments about that. But on religion everyone's an expert.

Then it struck me: this is the problem with politics too. Politics, like religion, is a topic where there's no threshold of expertise for expressing an opinion. All you need is strong convictions.

Do religion and politics have something in common that explains this similarity? One possible explanation is that they deal with questions that have no definite answers, so there's no back pressure on people's opinions. Since no one can be proven wrong, every opinion is equally valid, and sensing this, everyone lets fly with theirs.

But this isn't true. There are certainly some political questions that have definite answers, like how much a new government policy will cost. But the more precise political questions suffer the same fate as the vaguer ones.

I think what religion and politics have in common is that they become part of people's identity, and people can never have a fruitful argument about something that's part of their identity. By definition they're partisan.

Which topics engage people's identity depends on the people, not the topic. For example, a discussion about a battle that included citizens of one or more of the countries involved would probably degenerate into a political argument. But a discussion today about a battle that took place in the Bronze Age probably wouldn't. No one would know what side to be on. So it's not politics that's the source of the trouble, but identity. When people say a discussion has degenerated into a religious war, what they really mean is that it has started to be driven mostly by people's identities. [1]

Because the point at which this happens depends on the people rather than the topic, it's a mistake to conclude that because a question tends to provoke religious wars, it must have no answer. For example, the question of the relative merits of programming languages often degenerates into a religious war, because so many programmers identify as X programmers or Y programmers. This sometimes leads people to conclude the question must be unanswerable—that all languages are equally good. Obviously that's false: anything else people make can be well or badly designed; why should this be uniquely impossible for programming languages? And indeed, you can have a fruitful discussion about the relative merits of programming languages, so long as you exclude people who respond from identity.

More generally, you can have a fruitful discussion about a topic only if it doesn't engage the identities of any of the participants. What makes politics and religion such minefields is that they engage so many people's identities. But you could in principle have a useful conversation about them with some people. And there are other topics that might seem harmless, like the relative merits of Ford and Chevy pickup trucks, that you couldn't safely talk about with others.

The most intriguing thing about this theory, if it's right, is that it explains not merely which kinds of discussions to avoid, but how to have better ideas. If people can't think clearly about anything that has become part of their identity, then all other things being equal, the best plan is to let as few things into your identity as possible. [2]

Most people reading this will already be fairly tolerant. But there is a step beyond thinking of yourself as x but tolerating y: not even to consider yourself an x. The more labels you have for yourself, the dumber they make you.

766  Other / Meta / Re: Smartass newbie wearing a "signature". BAN? on: November 28, 2018, 04:59:58 AM
That's a clear violation of forum rules: advertising isn't allowed.

His last post is complaining about another ban, I can only hope the banned accounts are starting to hurt the spammers. They used to be able to create a new one and continue, and thanks to the merit requirements they can't replace banned accounts anymore. I think the increase in ban-appeal threads in Meta means some spammers are getting more desperate. I like it Cheesy

767  Economy / Trading Discussion / Bitfinex announces Tether neutrality and launches new stablecoin pairs on: November 28, 2018, 02:25:42 AM
Bitfinex announces Tether neutrality and launches new stablecoin pairs
Continuing our heritage of providing a neutral, coin-agnostic platform, from today Bitfinex users will be able to trade Tether-fiat directly on our platform through the addition of USDT/USD and EURT/EUR Tether trading pairs. This replaces the previous 1:1 conversion on deposits and withdrawals provided by Bitfinex, and reflects the increasing range of choice in the stablecoin market and demands from our consumers.

Tether was created October 6th 2014 in response to a clear market need to allow movements of funds quickly between different exchanges, whilst benefiting from the stability of the US Dollar. It remained the sole stablecoin in the market until March 2018, with a handful of alternatives launching this year.

Historically by providing the guarantee of the Tether / US Dollar 1:1 peg, Bitfinex has protected customers, ensuring they can redeem at any time. Having increased visibility of Tether through some shared executive team members gave Bitfinex the confidence to commit to this approach.

Now in reflection of the evolved stablecoin market, and in keeping with our ethos that an exchange should be a neutral actor, wallets on Bitfinex will support Tether balance USDT and EURT in addition to the existing USD and EUR fiat balances. Users may then use this new pair to convert fiat to Tether and vice versa as desired. This effectively means that Bitfinex users can deposit, trade and withdraw USD and EUR in both fiat and Tether denominations.

At Bitfinex we are proud to consistently be first in market in supporting forks and access to all major currencies. We were the first to introduce alternative stablecoins onto our platform, including Dai (an Ethereum collateralised stablecoin), and we will introduce new stablecoin pairings as and when demand is high enough to list them on our exchange.

All existing USD balances on Bitfinex will remain fiat and unaffected by this change. Any Tether deposits initiated before 14:30:00 UTC on the 27th of November will be credited to the user’s fiat wallet balances, whereas Tether deposits initiated after this cutoff time will be credited as Tether (USDT). As always, our dedicated support team will be available 24/7 for any queries around this change.

This update is launched in conjunction with increased flexibility in the redemption of Tether with a major update to the Tether.to platform. Customers are now able to redeem their USDTs to USD directly through the newly-updated Tether.to platform. The Tether website now supports full account verification whilst allowing for direct Tether-to-fiat conversions at a fixed 1:1 rate. See the full Tether announcement here to find out more.

As a team, we will continue to work hard to provide the best solutions for our customers, with the technology, expertise, and drive to adapt and evolve as quickly as the crypto market moves.

The Bitfinex Team

https://medium.com/bitfinex/bitfinex-announces-tether-neutrality-and-launches-new-stablecoin-pairs-a84b7ccbfd86

https://tether.to/tether-reopens-account-verification-and-direct-redemption-of-fiat-from-its-platform/
This update allows the immediate withdrawal of Tether to fiat (1:1), with the ability to acquire coming soon.
Transaction Value Range   Fee per fiat Withdrawal*   Fee per fiat Deposit   Fee per Tether Deposit or Withdrawal
100,000 USD to 999,999 USD   The greater of $1,000 or 0.4%   0.1%   FREE
1,000,000 USD to 10,000,000 USD   1%   0.1%   FREE
10,000,000 USD and over   3%   0.1%   FREE

I think this is great news. Bitfinex and every exchange that uses tether will put them as a token and not as a copy of USD. "Bitfinex will no longer treat Tether as 1:1 conversion". And people will be able to finaly exchange USDT for USD from tether.

It is always possible to create an investigative topic or open a topic with an accusation against the OP. And put red trust in his profile, plus ask for DT member to put red trust too.

But the ideal is that each member can make their judgment of value and evaluate if the service offered deserves their trust. And if the option to self-moderate the topic is to avoid spam. I had a deleted response on this topic that you mention and it was just a warning...

Opa.

772  Economy / Reputation / Re: What happened to Lutpin? on: November 25, 2018, 08:08:54 PM
I would trust him much more than this amount of time, last time we got paid on 23 September so I can wait up until end of December without worrying when I know I have had a past of received payments from both the owner and manager of 777 campaign. I would start to worry if nothing happens until end of December. As I said they the owner and manager needs only to change the payment terms and nothing else.

Why would anyone wait around that long? That's several months. I'd give a non paying campaign one grace period beyond the agreed payment schedule then I'd be out of there. They're not charities, neither should you be.

There are not many options, there are no campaigns right now. So I believe the best option is actually to wait for a possible payment or not to use any signature. If I were in the campaign I would also continue to use their signatures.

Plus it has Lutpin's past, his reputation. And they are campaigns that are already happening for a long time with companies already established.

It was arguing in a civilized way that many innovations were implanted and / or created. I'm sure this forum was very important in the development of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Unlike most social media, a forum is a place of debate, not only to speech. And this leads to the clash between different ideas. It is curious how Satoshi preferred to participate in places that provided debate and allowed more people to contribute to the project he created.

He could just post on the site, offering updates so the project would follow only his vision. Satoshi wanted Bitcoin to belong to everyone. Decentralized. And for this happen, places like this need to remain relevant.

Happy anniversary BTCT!

I wonder what was in topics 1 through 4 and posts 1 through 27.

At least reddit doesn't have paid signatures which promote spammers and people here for the wrong reasons.

But it has paid shills, which make up the majority of topic creators. Has bots to give upvote or downvote. This forum needs many improvements, but the "money" used here are cryptocurrencies. Especially for signatures. This makes people use more, learn to have greater security, be informed about new projects.

To be accepted into better campaigns they need to read more, study more, be able to write better. Eventually, they become great propagators of Bitcoin's qualities. And they can contribute with feedback on what does not work so well.
778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Highest Trading Volume in the World for Bitcoin on: November 21, 2018, 10:19:39 PM
It is possible to extract a lot of information from these graphs. But not what the OP wants to demonstrate.

Having venezuela as a great Bitcoins negotiator could be one of the best studies on the use case of cryptocurrencies. The ability of Bitcoin and the Internet to be resistant to authoritarian governments. The willingness of citizens to find alternative ways to save value when they do not trust government.

There are few ways you can save value without having to trust another entity. You will hardly be able to keep gold or silver at home and trade cash when you need to buy food.

Now, what I do not understand is why venezuela has become so popular and other countries with regimes as bad as not. Is it a matter of communication or popularization in these countries? Especially in African countries where the number of smartphones increases in a much larger proportion than the number of bank accounts.

Or maybe it is because of cheap electricity. This would boost local commerce as it would supply and demand Bitcoins locally.

It's not a movie, but I always remember the episode of The Good Wife. I think it was the first time someone talked for a long time on a TV show about cryptocurrencies.
