Little proposition... perhaps could could get a general sense of where the traffic is coming from (through the proxies).. and perhaps ban said countries of origin from being able to register.

That seems a little extreme.

I have a message board of my own that got hit by spam bots, and to solve it, we ended up having discovered the source countries from where the spam was coming from, so we banned those countries, and voila, no more spam. lol. Yeah, it was at the expense of potentially banning some potentially new legit users from those 'banned' countries... but the board was a lot better off without the spam. The people who registered from those "banned" countries had to be manually approved by a moderator or administrator, so we got all the 'legit' users.

tl;dr: Ban countries that spam from registering, by sending them to a "moderating" queue, and manually approve users that mods think are legit. This quickly weeds/purges out the fake accounts.
2 spamers
1 from U.S.
1 from EU
Ban EU and US
you lost 90% of your users  Huh

The EU isn't a country and I doubt they'd be silly enough to ban the entire of America. Banning countries probably isn't going to stop spam as I'm sure they'll be smart enough to use a proxy or get around it someway.

They can always buy bitcoin with paypal on ebay.. I believe  Wink

Yeah, if you wanted to buy a tiny bit of BTC with PP ebay would be your best and safest bet.

People, if you're going to buy Bitcoins on eBay DO NOT buy from someone with little feedback. You determine what little is, in my opinion under 100 is little.

Well little as in $5. Don't suppose it matters how much feedback they have as you should be covered, but use your own initiative.
15484  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] $1000 amazon e-gift card code on: February 02, 2014, 09:25:12 PM
can they be trusted? many websites are unavailable. a lot of guys don't have a website.

Yes, hence why they're on the trusted escrow list. Just do some research and check their trades and feedback and rep threads.
15485  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Netflix to accept Bitcoins soon on: February 02, 2014, 08:22:35 PM
While it may be possible that Netflix will eventually accept Bitcoin, it is unlikely for a very simple reason. Netflix depends on subscriptions and people paying every month whether they watch or not. People paying bitcoin would have to decide every month if they want to pay or not, and Netflix would lose subscribers every month.

One solution would be to sell 1-year subscriptions that could be refunded at any time. They might also accept bitcoin in areas where credit card fraud is high and where credit card usage is low.

I'm sure they'll sell the memberships by yearly if they were going to deal with Bitcoin. Would be beneficial to them if people can't cancel one month as well, although I'm sceptical of there being in truth in this rumour.
15486  Other / Meta / Re: Gain trust? on: February 02, 2014, 06:31:22 PM
Hi everyone, I am a newbie and I am wondering how to gain trust on this site?

Do deals with or pay money too people who are on the default trust list.

however why do you want trust?

Going to scam?

Uhh no. I would like to take a loan for a bitcoin miner and I've remarked that members with more trust are usually given better loans. And why would I pay money to scam money? That doesn't make much sense to me.

Well sometimes you've got to invest a little in a scam. People will trust you more with positive feedback, so buying some trust could be profitable.

And to answer your question, just do trades on here and you'll build up feedback and rep over time. I doubt you'll get a loan as newbie anyway without the amount you are wanting to loan in collateral.

You're trying to question the logic of Phinnaeus Gage? I'm surprised there wasn't a goat incorporated into it  Grin.

But I think a donation address to a charity or a link to a video on Bitcoin or something would've been better.
15488  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Netflix to accept Bitcoins soon on: February 02, 2014, 04:02:49 PM
Don't think this is true. Keiser just needs publicity.

Also "thinking about" is non-news.

ya.ya.yo!

What does he need publicity for?

Why didn't you make it a donation address to Sean's Outpost? At least then you will know if anybody scans it.

If we, meaning all of us, pull this off, I'm sure Overstock will make a donation somewhere once they realize the jump in sales via bitcoins and reverse engineer as to where, how and why such were made.

How many people are taking the banner? Just one?
15493  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin givaway guess a number between 1-10k and get 0.01btc on: February 02, 2014, 03:02:14 PM
Between 1 and 10k? How about lowering that a little? And this is just going to encourage newbspam.
there is no spam because only one guess per person daily.

They'll just use alternate accounts, and how do we know this is a fair giveaway? With 10k numbers we could be here a very long time.

alternate accounts are part of life in bitcointalk.org , just accepted it and move on.

And so are scams. Are you just trying to bump your post count up? You don't need to reply "wrong number , try again tomorrow" to everyone.

If the following is seen during the Super Bowl, and Seattle Seahawks win, especially via efforts by Richard Sherman, you best be prepared for an onslaught of orders,

Explain this logic, please.
15495  Other / Off-topic / Re: Book recommendation on: February 02, 2014, 02:57:13 PM
I recommend Atonement by Ian Mcewan. One of my favourite books. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami is also a really bizarre read.

Atonement is great and so is the film, but I'm not a big fan of McEwans other books, though I haven't read any of his earlier stuff which is apparently more macabre. Wasn't a big fan of Kafka, but I'm not a big fan of magical realism stuff.

A book I recommend is Kill Your Friends by John Niven. It's like American Psycho set in the 90s music industry and it's laugh out loud funny. They're making a film of it soon.

Anyone know any Silk Road alternative sites that accept other currencies? I know Sheep had LTC but that went bye-bye.

http://www.reddit.com/r/DarkNetMarkets Not sure what ones take alts but I'm sure there's some.

Bump to get back into people's mind.

What designs are you currently selling? Just the ones in the first post?
15498  Other / Off-topic / Re: Movie Recommendation Station on: February 02, 2014, 02:48:44 PM
Can anyone recommend a good sc-fi -  not widely known but still good?
Moon
Serenity
Red Planet

I've seen Ender's Game few days ago - it was nice but felt like a summary. They wanted to insert as much from the book as possible and it seemed like a slideshow of memories.

Haven't seen the other two, but Moon was decent. Oblivion had a few similarities. Film was so-so though.
15499  Other / Off-topic / Re: There are some real scumbags in crypto on: February 02, 2014, 02:47:06 PM

My primary concern really aren't speculators who get burned being on the wrong side of extreme-risk trades.
My primary concern is the reputation these pump&dumps leave on the CryptoCurrency area in general, IMHO this can and will eventually assist in discrediting BitCoin/LiteCoin (or worse, serve as a welcome excuse for regulators to hammer in to "protect their investing citizens" and alike).

Most of these AltCoins are doing more damage than anything else and are headed in a very very bad direction. Really bad.
To me, they are the biggest threat to the BitCoin principles in existence and there's nothing in sight that could stop them.

Yeah, all these alts really do give crypto a bad name. The fact that people even bother mining or dealing with them is troubling,

Just think of altcoins as an inferior product. It's just like buying a cheaper non-branded product as opposed to the quality original.
