161  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Wirex- Bitcoin Debit Card | Buy Bitcoin | Mobile Banking | Send Money on: March 29, 2024, 10:33:52 AM
I no longer have any confidence in it. For example, a friend had problems withdrawing his stable tokens/funds from Wirex, after 4 attempts his account was blocked.

So he has even bigger problems, at least I can still use the virtual card, but I have already opened a Crypto.com account.

Maybe it sounds harsh, but it doesn't look to me as bigger-than-usual issues for Wirex.
But yeah, getting the money out via that virtual card is a pretty good call (and you made me thinking, thanks for that).

Afaik their virtual card doesn't work with Google Pay / Apple pay. Is that still correct?
162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using an USB stick to store the blockchain. on: March 29, 2024, 10:24:25 AM
I have come to the conclusion that it is not viable to use a USB link for the blockchain, could anyone verify that this is so please?

I don't know if this is helpful because it's not 100% the same situation, but my Bitcoin Core has its blockchain on an external HDD connected via USB.
And I can tell you that during the last ~3 years my HDD got corrupted twice (and interestingly, it seems it was during shutdown/restart, not when power went down suddenly), last time I had to re-format the drive (and no bad sectors found).

We would like to apologize for the inconvenience you experienced due to the delay in the delivery of your card.

If it helps you at all, my replacement card is also unnaturally slow in getting here. But I'm not that much worried, if Wirex doesn't want my fees, I'm sure that Bitrefill will be just happy to do that. (Plus, I'm not too eager to spend these days.)

it sounds like delaying, again no tracking number or concrete information about the refunds, what does Wirex actually have in their hands if not even the WXT tokens, at least they admit once that they have problems with the physical cards...

I've learned to have the lowest expectations on Wirex support, so I'm not surprised by that answer you've got.
Still, it's more than nothing. Good luck!
165  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The identity of the bitcoin founder. on: March 28, 2024, 06:31:56 AM
why is the identity of the bitcoin founder (Satoshi Nakamoto) remained unknown

Simply because he was privacy conscious and because he wanted to remain anonymous.
Plus, since in those days Bitcoin was worthless, just a cool technology known by very few, it was not so difficult to stay low.

It may worth mentioning that when Gavin said that he will go to present the early bitcoin to CIA, next step was Satoshi disappearing forever.
In this contexts there were ideas that if he would have been known his life may have been in danger, for example.
166  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blacklisting Wallet Addresses Across Various Bitcoin Wallet Types on: March 28, 2024, 06:21:59 AM
Just another options that no one agree, you can create your own wallet and install it in your own system/server.

Either you download blockchain, use external api or curl, and then save blacklist address to send. And ofcourse this is just optional, and it wont change work of blockchain it self

Of course, you can make your own wallet software that works as you want; you can add there a blacklist for sending.
However, OP was asking about receiving from others. And since they will not use your specially made wallet (so the sending would be blocked), you cannot lock the money you'd receive from them.

169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How easy BTC could be susceptible to computer security threats? on: March 26, 2024, 04:49:23 PM
If you have upgraded your cell phone then it's better to place your wallet on old cell phone which is no more required and keep it offline. This way you can have an air gaped device with zero investment.

Using old phone as cold storage is not a new idea, I've been eyeing it too in the past. And I got convinced that the minuses of such an approach are worthy to be taken into account, hence I've abandoned the idea. Maybe it worth reading this topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5377997

Your seed is your wallet. Lost your seed, lost your coins. There is no way to recover your coins in case your seed is compromised or lose your seed. We can say that's one limitation of Bitcoin

It's not a limitation or bug. It's a feature/it's by design: without this you don't have proper trustless self custody for your money.

171  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Why use blockchain for a CBDC? on: March 25, 2024, 09:04:05 PM
In short, from a pure technology and user experience standpoint, using blockchain for a CBDC is bonkers. CBDCs should instead be based on a traditional centralized architecture.

That's 100% correct.
Still, some may try to use blockchain, not necessarily as technology, more as a buzz word for the masses that will not know nor care if a blockchain is actually used or not, but may believe (with enough money pumped into newspapers and other advertising) that those CBDCs "are like bitcoin".
172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How easy BTC could be susceptible to computer security threats? on: March 25, 2024, 08:54:51 PM
Bitcoin does not have a security flaw which makes it susceptible to risks and attacks. What can happen is you as a user can have breaches in your device which exposes your personal wallet to risks, this is not a breach on the Bitcoin Network.

Protect your device from external threats by;
• Not clicking on untrusted links,
• No downloading random, unverified apps,
• Only use non custodian, open source and reputable wallets,
• Do not give third party access to your wallets,
• Use an airpagged device or hardware wallet.

Great list! I will add: keep the seed words offline, safely, without any chance for others to get access to them; the seed has to never touch a device that will ever go online. Keeping the seed as copies in multiple geographically distinct places is also a good idea.
173  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blacklisting Wallet Addresses Across Various Bitcoin Wallet Types on: March 25, 2024, 08:48:22 PM
But if I may ask, what could make a person want to blacklist a wallet address from sending him/her some BTC? Because I'm yet to get any reasonable reason for one to think about the implementation of such feature amidst the millions of BTC wallet address in existence.

But, however, I'm very much open to learning if anyone has a reason why such feature is needed. Thank you

Let's say you are a big company (like MicroStrategy) and, for whatever reason (like wanting to look good in the eyes of some square-headed politicians) you don't want any questionable money getting to your wallet or cold storage. It could be an use case.
Or it can be a way to fight dust attacks.

Various centralized exchanges, gambling sites or other services that want to overly enforce KYC and "source of funds" may want to also do this kind of blacklisting (although in reality the current situation suits them best, since they can freeze user funds and - why not - use them for business' needs for a long time for free).

So while the concept of tainted money is pretty stupid (and should not be recognized by anyone who cares about bitcoin!), there can be businesses that may like such a feature like blacklisting.
174  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin withstand attacks by state-level agents? on: March 25, 2024, 08:35:49 PM
I hear a lot about how safe bitcoin is. And 51% attacking it for a private person/ company does not make any sense and is unlikely.

But what would happen if a state wants to attack Bitcoin and uses a vast amount of compute budget (in the billions). What would happen?

Can you understand that in order to do 51% attack they would have to either buy some of the pools to redirect their power, either buy as many mining devices as needed to match the current power (let's approximate to buying as many mining devices as they are in use now)? Or, well, a mix of the two. I myself I'm unsure of the real magnitude of this number (of devices).

The thing is that even big mining companies may have to stay in the waiting list to buy the gear they need. So it would be a very slow and expensive task, not mentioning that since those billions would be taxpayers' money, if the government is a democracy, it will be the last thing (use of money) they'll approve before getting changed and the preorders canceled.
175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blacklisting Wallet Addresses Across Various Bitcoin Wallet Types on: March 25, 2024, 08:25:26 PM
Bitcoin doesn't have such thing as blocking or blacklisting.
However, various centralized services, of which some may call themselves wallets, do have this, but it's more a stupid workaround:
* if their wallets receive coins that they consider tainted by their rules, they may seize them (but the funds were received, as you can see)
* if their users try to use their account to send coins to wallets the centralized service prohibits (for example gambling), they will not allow the sending and may lock the account

I will add that my statement doesn't include LN. I don't know LN good enough to also tell about it.
176  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 24, 2024, 09:44:31 PM
I used a free AI based beta version for reucing noise on this image too, which gave me slightly better results than the manual, masked approach offered by the commercial software suite, which is already quite powerful. There's a popular commercial noise reduction software, which seems to deliver on-par results when compated to the free AI software, which runs in a command window (no clickable controls or previews).

I am not that skilled in image processing, but from my knowledge the manual tools, even professional, need quite a big amount of work to get to a good result.
With some AI tools you can even select regions where there's a bigger problem, and regions to be left alone at a certain step, and, with some trial and error approach you can do wonders in reasonably short time.
I'm glad you've found the right tool for you; the result is impressive.

The source image stack was captured on a lucky night near new moon with perfectly clear sky, no wind and about -8° C temperature outside.

Wow!

177  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Can Bitcoin save a nation that owes a lot of money / Debt on: March 24, 2024, 09:32:16 PM
You are talking about voting, but even using the example of my country, I can say that this does not work. Previously, we had elections

In your case there are no different powers in the state, hence even the votes are stolen: the result of the votes is not related at all with the number of voters, not with what they've elected.
Plus, while even in democracies you get, in many cases, to the point you have to vote between a couple of bad choices, I expect that in your cases the choices are... simply a bad joke.

Sadly my logic doesn't work in dictatorship. In such cases, the history has shown that sadly the only solution is a revolution. And that is painful and risky, usually with many dead and with unknown chances of success, including the fact that the regime coming afterwards will probably not be exactly what the vast population was hoping for.
Sorry... I have no solution in your case...  Sad

using paid software to process my astrophotography images made me elevate the quality of results by a good amount.

I've used free AI software to enhance some pictures and and I've got impressive results.
I can just imagine that with paid ones... sky is the limit.
Great picture! But I expect the source was pretty nice too Wink

26 days until the halving

Somehow the people are still following the noise of (rather small overall) price variations, forgetting the (this) actual important news.
...and from what I've read even the ETF is not yet fully priced in, so the next year+ will be interesting.
179  Economy / Services / Re: How to make $100,000+ a year 1h-2h per day on: March 24, 2024, 09:05:02 PM
Over a span of the last 4 years, with merely 2-3 hours of work a day, I've grossed nearly $500k in net profit

So you've made $500k in 4 easy years and now, instead of enjoying your money, you decided to be so kind and sell cheap your method.
With huge respect for your immense kindness.... please try this scam away from this forum.

Does Bitcoin have the potential to impact climate change?

Yes and you will find stories about it and a lot of FUD too.
* Bitcoin mining consumes a lot of energy (and OMG we gonna die because of this /sarcasm)
* Bitcoin mining can be used to consume excess energy in many cases, including, for example methane that would otherwise be burned or released to the atmosphere
* Bitcoin is money and money drives to both good and bad, depending on the people having it
