[FREE RAFFLE] Betnomi Cold Wallet - 7 round 🦊

Multumesc!

1103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hits 500 GB size hard disk data on: February 02, 2023, 07:57:34 AM
For the 'chainstate' (and indexes if you have them), where can i find them and what are these folders or files exactly?

I don't know what they contain. Files  Cheesy
chainstate and indexes are folders in the data folder, usually at the same level with blocks.
But it depends if you use standard settings/config or you've already set up something, since there are config settings for them.
You may want to read:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory
I don't know the settings for those folders, I've always used symlinks.

So, basically are you meaning that after the IBD, it is okay to move the blockchain data to a HDD (keping the indexes in SSD)?

What I meant was that the blocks can always stay on HDD (including during IBD!). And after the IBD even having everything on HDD no longer hurts that much.
1104  Local / Română (Romanian) / Re: Criptomonede vs bani digitali emiși de Stat on: February 01, 2023, 05:41:04 PM

1106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Main Stream Media trying to defame Crypto / Bitcoin on: February 01, 2023, 03:29:08 PM
Look like mainstream media trying to put fear in people mind

There are multiple things here:
1. Some wealthy entities are buying bitcoin happily at this price levels. They may be paying for defamatory / FUD articles.
2. Under the hood there may be some sort of "exchanges war". In the same way Binance has given the last push to FTX and spread some FUD on Coinbase (iirc), I would not be surprised if some exchange tries to "give a push" to Gemini.
3. Governments and central banks have their own anti-bitcoin agenda. Just they are trying to be careful, since if they hit bitcoin too hard people may also perceive badly the yet-to-come CBDCs.

But we know already that we don't have to get scared of each and every news, don't we?
1107  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Who can help? My husband died and a mining farm remained from him. on: February 01, 2023, 03:15:13 PM
Can you write to me in private messages?

I agree with what was posted before me. Dealing in private (especially at this stage) can get you (too) easily scammed.

I advise you wait until users with bigger experience in mining will see this and can guide you into providing relevant information (eg what kind of miners and hardware you have there).
It may worth moving this (or asking again) in the Mining Hardware subforum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=76.0

You may want to consider taking a few pictures with those devices (make sure nothing private/sensitive is captured), uploading the images to imgur.com and posting the links here on the forum.
1108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hits 500 GB size hard disk data on: February 01, 2023, 02:41:40 PM
Is 500GB a lot? 5TB drives cost less than $100, so $20 for 1 TB. $20 gives you enough space to run a system, some basic software and have enough space to run full node at least until 2025.

man, you're talking about HHD right? it is slow as fuck.

You can keep the block data on the "slow as fuck" HDDs and only the chainstate (and indexes if you have them) on a small SSD. And it's already very fast.
Even more, you no longer need ultra-speed after the IBD, so you can move then everything onto HDD. That's what I did not long ago I had to do an IBD (external HDD is not so great when one doesn't have UPS).

Compressing data into a format like .zip or .tar can roughly decrease file sizes by a factor of 1/3rd.

500 / 3 = 166 gigabytes.

While I do not support most updates or amendments to bitcoin core, I do wonder if compression of file sizes may become necessary at some point to maintain node support.

Did you actually try this out? I would be overly surprised if you get for real these numbers. Plus, as LoyceV said, your math is wrong.
1109  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why you should avoid login Capthca of Bitcointalk and How to do it? on: February 01, 2023, 02:30:34 PM
This may be only partly on-topic, however, there's something I want to say for some time.
I've noticed that Blockchair's onion website (http://blkchairbknpn73cfjhevhla7rkp4ed5gg2knctvv7it4lioy22defid.onion/) also has a captcha. This has two interesting properties: it works on Tor (which bitcointalk doesn't have and has a not-so-great-solution) and it's most probably not provided by Google.

Those with better skills in inspecting web pages may want to take a look; maybe even come with some interesting ideas (or, why not, implementations - )

1111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-ready linux distro on: February 01, 2023, 10:58:36 AM
However, if you want some sort of pruned node, you can make an encrypted volume as a file (see veracrypt) and when you have all the data you need you copy that file onto the USB stick (with a generic data.dat like name), then delete it. The stick will look empty and recovering the data will be just fine as long as nothing new is written onto it.
This will only fool the most cursory of investigations - i.e. plug it in, it looks empty, oh well nothing to see here. Anything beyond that will clearly show the header of your encrypted file, and then you are back at the issue of being asked to decrypt it.

Well, then you can put some documents there like you'd write a book or a paper. Or.. use your imagination...
Also, the beauty of veracrypt volume files is that there's no clear header or anything to be read or understood. It can really be anything there.

Multumesc!

Maybe o_e_l_e_o will win our special BonBon L giveaway rewarding his bullish prediction. 0O

I've just took a look and I think that the last block number was 774505 and if I'm right then o_e_l_e_o may have won place #4.
However, let's wait for the official announcement.
1114  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: SINBAD MIXER Bitcoin Price Prediction Challenge on: February 01, 2023, 10:28:59 AM
Price of btc at 10 GMT 30.01.2023 was 23203.06

Woah, so Royse was indeed correct. Lucky me! \o/
(I had my doubts because I had the impression that at least on Bitstamp the price went under 23200; but yeah, CMC was the one that matters.)

So the winners are:

1st NeuroticFish $23,202.30 Prize: 6 mBTC

Yay! Happy day! Thank you very much for the contest, the generosity and the prize Smiley
I can confirm that OP has just sent the coins to my address (this was fast!)
1115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-ready linux distro on: February 01, 2023, 10:10:14 AM
I think a USB live distro with encryption + persistance could do the trick. Electrum / pruned node on it

We're going back to circle. Someone already mention the worker at border might perform random search and ask you to decrypt it. If they find cryptocurrency wallet/software, they could suspect you're trying to evade "crypto travel rule" from FATF or other similar rule.

While this can easily be a solution for the case you get lucky, it's not something to rely on.
However, if you want some sort of pruned node, you can make an encrypted volume as a file (see veracrypt) and when you have all the data you need you copy that file onto the USB stick (with a generic data.dat like name), then delete it. The stick will look empty and recovering the data will be just fine as long as nothing new is written onto it. ...But if, for some reason, something gets written onto that stick.. tough luck.

But I think that the airgap phone + the seed on pieces of paper + downloading a SPV at arrival is easier and more straightforward and doesn't rely on "getting lucky" or not.
1116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Electrum wont connect to bitcoin core on: January 31, 2023, 05:10:24 PM
https://armantheparman.com/connect-electrum-desktop-wallet-to-your-bitcoin-node/

that is what i followed, exactly. wont connect. So are you saying im missing an electrum server and this will resolve?

You've missed something from there:

I will show you how to connect an Electrum Desktop Wallet to your Bitcoin Node. First, you will need an Electrum Server running. There are many types of Electrum Servers. In my articles above, I include instructions on how to install Electrum Personal Server, but there is also Electrum Server in Rust, and Electrum X/Spesmilo.

The articles above also take you through the installation of the Electrum Desktop Wallet.

Whichever Electrum Server you have, this article will apply.

Unfortunately you have none, hence, yes, after you install an electrum server (and leave it running for a while to build its database), you should be OK.
That same guy has a tutorial for Electrum Personal Server. But if you want a smarter server where you can use Electrum with multiple wallets and also (optionally) a blockchain explorer, I have a tutorial too (for Windows users) here on this forum.
1117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-ready linux distro on: January 31, 2023, 03:55:54 PM
Not entirely sure about the phone. How would you be hiding the wallet on it?

The wallet software can stay not installed, as an APK. You can even get it with you on another stick or memory card.
You will (re)install it when you arrive. You will put the seed into it only when you arrive or when you actually need it first.

And what are you going to say under a targeted search when they ask you why you have an airgapped phone with no SIM card in it?

It doesn't have to be airgapped, it doesn't have to stay without SIM either if you don't want to. You can reset to factory later.
And you can tell it's for backup, just in case you drop your phone into the swimming pool  Cheesy (of course, I am sure you can prepare a better story for this).

The seed phrase can be easily obfuscated in a stack of academic/professional/employment related documents, notes, books, etc. Alternatively, it is easy to hide in a hidden volume on your laptop, which you could decrypt to show copies of sensitive documents such as your passport or travel insurance. Impossible to prove the hidden volume even exists.

But yes, I would just use Electrum and point it at my own server which is running at home.

Exactly!

Haha!

1119  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-ready linux distro on: January 31, 2023, 02:10:32 PM
Actually this is mostly incorrect. At least the HW I have doesn't write anywhere it's a HW and also doesn't write Bitcoin on it. So your HW is just another electronic device most will not even know what it is and for what (I don't know how all HWs look like, do you..? And then what you expect from the customs employee?)
If you are being searched and they find an electronic device they do not recognize, then I expect them to ask you what it is, or even plug it in and show them what it is. Lie to them at your own risk.
[...]
Arguably even Tor you may not need since you're not from home, since you don't necessarily need to hide your IP.
Using Tor in this scenario also prevents the hotel (or whoever owns the WiFi you are using) from seeing which websites you are connecting to. I would definitely still use it, unless you are happy with the hotel staff knowing you are connecting to bitcoin.org, electrum.com, etc.

Both are valid (and very good) points, thank you for that.
In this case Tor remains, maybe an old phone as cold (enough) storage and the seed fragmented and scattered on multiple pieces of paper.
Still SPV wallets are the way to go given the size of the blockchain..., right?
1120  Local / Română (Romanian) / Re: Criptomonede vs bani digitali emiși de Stat on: January 31, 2023, 11:14:22 AM

Am vazut si m-am socat (si nu in sensul rau).
