Mie mi-a sarit in ochi.

Si, dupa cum anticipasem amandoi, a meritat asteptarea!

1162  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Be careful with saxydev; he is a possible scammer on: January 27, 2023, 05:52:14 PM
Of course, it was no joke, but a written agreement. If saxydev considered it a joke then, again, it's his fault and, once more, he has to be responsible for the consequences of his actions.

OK, OK, you convinced me. I'll support too the tag.
1163  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CrownChange.net - instant electronic currency exchange service on: January 27, 2023, 03:51:33 PM
I find it interesting that only newbies with one post are praising this exchanger.
It smells of accounts made by exchange's owner for promoting it. This is at very least shady...
I tend to agree with the established members of the forum: this is most probably scam, please be careful!
1164  Local / Romānă (Romanian) / Lightning Network: intrebari / schimb de opinii on: January 27, 2023, 02:25:36 PM

Impressive! Thank you, Krogoth, for all these raffles, and may you keep your good mood for many years to come!

29 - NeuroticFish

As an advice, you may want to transform the first 10 entries also into double digits, else some may think they get some unfair advantage.
1167  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is it wrong to try your luck with Solo on: January 27, 2023, 06:59:08 AM
Imho the math will always tell you it's not worth it. It's up to you, if you have another hash rate on pools and want to gamble some TH. Because it's gambling. Some, few, get lucky. The rest.. are not in the news.
1168  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor Password Manager Deprecation! on: January 26, 2023, 08:08:29 PM
Trezor first suggesting for replacement is Bitwarden, but I would strongly suggest you first try KeePass

I've used both. For completely offline use KeePass is just fine. For those who want a password manager with a server for multiple devices/platforms, ..I do like Bitwarden and it's open source too.
Of course, everybody should be careful what's he's storing on the internet.
1169  Other / Meta / Re: Wall of fame / shame. Shit posts so bad that they are actually funny on: January 26, 2023, 07:38:36 PM
Total Newbie.  Apologies for a dumb question.  Please help.
I've been sitting on a BTC wallet and a 'legacy' BTC address since 2009.  The wallet starts with the number 1.

It's a bitcoin-qt wallet and I've just opened it.  It was over 730 weeks behind.  There is an orange header at the top of the wallet with a message

"URGENT: Alert key compromised, upgrade required"

Do I need to do anything other than let it sync?  How would I update the wallet?

Updating an old wallet can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. Depending on the type of wallet, you'll want to take certain steps to ensure you are keeping it safe and secure.

For leather wallets, make sure to regularly clean it with a damp cloth to remove any dirt and grime. It's also important to use a leather conditioner to maintain the leather and keep it from drying out.

If you have a wallet made from synthetic materials, use a damp cloth to clean it but avoid using any chemical cleaners. If the wallet is starting to look worn out, use an appropriate patch to prevent further damage.

Finally, you'll want to make sure your wallet is up to date with the latest security features. This may include RFID-blocking technology, a locking system, or a tamper-resistant zipper. By taking the proper steps, you can make sure your wallet remains safe and secure.

I've reported it, so you may not see this gem for long.
So, guys and gals, if you don't want to have problems with your bitcoin wallets,  make sure you clean them properly and use leather conditioner!  Cheesy Cheesy
1170  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Split blockchain download in different devices on: January 26, 2023, 07:08:52 PM
Let's say you have 3 drives X Y Z

X has 100 GB of free space you would be ok using for the blockchain
Y has 300 GB
Z has 100 GB

Would it be possible to tell the client, "allocate 100GB to X, 300GB to Y, 100GB to Z" and have the files downloaded and verified in the right order?
And you could just keep adding further drives in case you ran out of space. Right now if you run out of space you have to buy a bigger device that allows at least 500GB at least once in case you used pruned mode, but for someone that wants to keep the entire blockchain this would be good. It would also give some usage for smaller drives you don't use much.

As said, drives are cheap. So there's no reasonably good reason for implement anything like you said.
For now there are settings in config for having different folders in different places or you can use symlinks. However, this means that you'll still need a drive for storing the blocks folder, which is ~477 GB and another drive(s) for the rest.

Right now getting a HDD for the bulk of data (I've bought not long ago a 2TB a CMR HDD exactly for this) is not expensive and, if you set up the chainstate (and indexes) stay on SSD (at least temporarily) the IBD is also relatively fast. So imho doing odd setups with the HDDs for the sake of free space for bitcoin doesn't worth it.
1171  Economy / Economics / Re: A bullish case: HOW MUCH #BITCOIN to get rich and fund your lifestyle? on: January 26, 2023, 06:02:58 PM
Becoming rich is not that difficult, in the big scheme of things. One good idea, a bit of luck, or an incredible skill (think of Leo Messi) can lead you to become very rich.
The difficult part is staying rich. Securing such a luck to your heritage.
This is what Bitcoin si for.

I beg to differ. Yes, being in the right place at the right time, have the right idea, luck, skill... these are not things that come easy.
Just think if Leo Messi would have been having an accident and lose a leg. Great skill gone down the drain. And many are in similar situation, had some of the ingredients, but didn't get them all or didn't mix them well.
Imho it is difficult to get rich.

Staying rich is imho the easier part. Having the money you can hire the right people who - for the right salary and fees - will grow that money in ways you could not even imagine.

Bitcoin can be both.
Imho it still can be the tool to get wealthy without having the right skill, knowledge, idea or connections, just now one obviously needs significantly bigger starting funds than he needed 5-7-10 years ago.
And clearly it can the tool for securing one's wealth. Buying at least 10-20 BTC is already something significant for us, but for wealthy people it's not; and even more, they don't care that much of the price fluctuations, not on short term. But, if somebody rich has hired the right people, he already have bitcoins in his portfolio, maybe even without knowing it.

The keys were removed/moved in 5 January.

?? you don't verify the binary?

The recommended way to verify the binary is with the SHA256 hashes, read here: https://bitcoincore.org/en/download/

PS. You may want to move this topic to Dev&Tech, you may get better answers.
1173  Local / Romānă (Romanian) / Re: Criptomonede vs bani digitali emiși de Stat on: January 26, 2023, 05:21:16 PM

Sa vezi in randul pensionarilor.

1174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Issues with Proof-of-Work on: January 26, 2023, 04:53:34 PM
I agree POW > POS by far I just think that POW may also be limiting the potential of decentralized currency in its own way.

It seemed promising a first but with all the required amendments is it really still the best solution out there or is it time to rethink the base principles of consensus.

POW has indeed the theoretical capacity of getting centralized by miners migrating where they can get more profit (cheaper electricity, lower taxes, maybe solar/wind power).
But this is the theory. In reality the miners are pretty well spread, much better than 5 years ago. In reality the miners can pick the pools they want and I don't see why miners would be dumb and endanger Bitcoin (and their revenues) by using all of them the same pool (and even trying 51% attack, which would clearly bring the price down).
Actually I've seen - not in case of Bitcoin - one pool getting over 51% hash rate and still not attempting anything fishy. Again, staying honest usually pays off better in this business.

Or.. do you see other issues which you expect us to guess?!
1175  Economy / Speculation / Re: What happens next if Bitcoin drops to zero? on: January 26, 2023, 09:17:37 AM
1. Will Bitcoin ever fall to zero someday?
2. What happens if it ever falls to zero?

Your logic is faulty imho, sorry. And I will tell you how I see it.
If ever (yes, the chances are less than slim, but still) Bitcoin falls to 0, that will be the result of something, not the trigger to something. It would be the result of people losing interest, maybe because of some error we cannot foresee, maybe because something much better was created.
So the answers would be:
1. Most probably no.
2. Nothing special. The relevant things have already happened by then.
1176  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Be careful with saxydev; he is a possible scammer on: January 26, 2023, 09:11:50 AM
I am going to donate % of Bitcoin I receive from saxydev to randomly selected members who wrote in this topic before this post, so we can have nice party time  Cool

Come on, you didn't realistically expected him to pay, didn't you?
And, as Loyce said, is somewhat a gray area there. So imho it make more sense you just tag him properly instead of pursuing a flag, since a tag is clearly your opinion.

I don't want to be one of his customers, clearly, since whatever he tells today may not stand tomorrow, but, again, that's not the material for a flag.
1177  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need help updating 11yrs old wallet on: January 26, 2023, 08:58:19 AM
I will only add to what o_e_l_e_o already said that imho best would be if you make a separate/safe backup of the wallet file and store it safely before doing anything else (including upgrading Bitcoin Core).
1178  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The one thing I still don't get about crypto and Tax on: January 25, 2023, 03:42:00 PM
Why the hell are they using the word " its unregulated " as an excuse but still take money from people?

Grin next time a politician comes asking you to vote for him, as him exactly this.
You will most probably get a non-answer consisting in 1000-words of utter bullshit, but it should be fun.

My answer is: because politics is one, reality is another and all governments need money, no matter what.
1179  Economy / Services / Re: Gazeta's Escrow Service on: January 25, 2023, 03:34:29 PM
...* Always use messages signed with your address and ask the same from the parties of the deals. Make sure the parts are aware that only such signed messages are meaningful. Impersonation is a big risk in your business. ...

Newbie question: What kind of messages does this refer to exactly, do you mean messages and PMs on this forum? If so, sign how, is there a SMF or forum specific mechanism for that, and how do I prove my public key, if it's going to be safer than my forum login?

Sorry for my ignorance Smiley

I've said it, but it seems that you've ignored the most important part. Bitcoin allows signing a message. If you own a bitcoin wallet you can sign a message with one of the addresses of that wallet (actually, better said, with the private key of such an address).
So best is that all parts of the deal have bitcoin addresses staked (you'll need to learn to sign a message, you'll need to also take a look onto this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.new#new ) and sign their deal related messages from those addresses (maybe also stating "current" date/time).

So no, it's not a SMF mechanism, it's a Bitcoin mechanism we also use for proving ownership of bitcointalk accounts in case of troubles (this topic can be informative too: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5436734)
1180  Other / Meta / Re: [ASK] Does this forum really have its own wallet platform? on: January 25, 2023, 03:10:41 PM
I just banned it. Haven't seen this scam before but I'm sure they will use alts to try do the same.

At least we can hope that maybe the alts won't be so old accounts (unless hacked and/or bought), hence they'll be much less credible.
