1661  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Trouble installing on Ubuntu 16.04 on: June 15, 2016, 03:23:45 PM
Thanks for your quick reply. I tried the second option and opted restore a wallet, entered my seed, but the "next" button remained faded, so I could not go any further.

So to your first option, where do I find the repository containing the download?
Regards,
jamarsh
Looks like user Herbert2020 beat me to it. I have not installed Electrum in a while and would have had to google a repository.
1662  Economy / Economics / Re: Is Bitcoins safe? on: June 15, 2016, 01:25:54 PM
I think of it this way: Bitcoin is ultra safe, but how good is your security? There is no nanny bank to help you. If you are going to trust your money to a windows computer and choose "password" as your password then bitcoin may not be safe for you. You are not only the bank, but also the chief of security.
1663  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is too slow on: June 15, 2016, 01:20:31 PM
Bitcoin transactions are the fastest global transactions ever created in the history of history.
...

Only if you completely ignore all the other cryptos, of which Bitcoin is one of the slowest. Most secure maybe, but definitely not the fastest.

True. There are other coins based on bitcoin that are now faster. And some very old systems are also fast. For example Hawala (حِوالة) , which means transfer, is an Islamic banking system based on trusted brokers. It is basically instantaneous but requires profound trust.
Satoshi and I don't like the need to trust. But anyway, good point.
1664  Economy / Goods / Re: Alpaca socks; The best place to buy on: June 14, 2016, 08:25:07 PM
I have bought several pair and they were really good socks. Kinda gross, but you could wear them for days and your feet did not stink? However I tried to buy some for a friend when I was in San Fransisco and could not get a hold of the original business. (grassland alpacas or something?) It was a bummer as I would definitely buy more.

EDIT: Hey I'm wearing a pair right now!
1665  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Trouble installing on Ubuntu 16.04 on: June 14, 2016, 08:10:20 PM
I installed core last week and it was a bit of a pain also. Make sure you have done the following:

1. Add the repository containing the download in software & updates.
2. Add any dependencies. For example (sudo apt-get install python-qt4 python-pip) is dependent in Electrum.
3. Then try (sudo pip install https://download.electrum.org/2.6.4/Electrum-2.6.4.tar.gz)

It should work with these steps, but does it?

This is claimed to also work:

1. Download and untar Electrum-2.6.4.tar.gz
2. In the electrum directory, run: 'python electrum'
3. To install it on your system, run: 'sudo python setup.py install'

any luck with that one?
1666  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for apologizes from those that wanted to change Bitcoin blocksize... on: June 14, 2016, 07:59:45 PM
Blocksize will still need to be increased. Just because the price went up does not mean our problems are solved.
1667  Economy / Speculation / Re: Fucking Chinese! on: June 14, 2016, 05:19:31 PM
You mean the guys who schooled America in what capitalism is? The people who will lead the world economy for the rest of the century, just as they have for most of human history? It should come as no surprise that China will be the biggest player in the future of Bitcoin.
1668  Other / Archival / Re: The future of bitcoin... on: June 14, 2016, 05:13:51 PM
OP is the tool that recommended everyone sell at $200, $300, $400 and now... just a reminder to noobs who sees "legendary" and thinks they know what they're talking about

True that. We became "legends" by wasting our time on these forums.  Grin
I base my optimism on facts and encourage anyone to ignore things like my status. The reality is that:

1. Sentiment about bitcoin is higher than ever.
2. More people use it than ever.
3. There are more use cases than ever.
4. There is more money in the network than ever.
5. It is more broadly accepted for payments than ever.
6. There is more investment in supporting the network than ever.

Like I said earlier, the war is over. Wink

1669  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is too slow on: June 14, 2016, 05:01:12 PM
Exactly and the day I started to use bitcoin, I have never used banks or WU for making money transfers as bitcoin is taking care of it in best possible way.

Me as well. I dumped my PayPal account in 2010 when I switched to bitcoin for online purchases. Ever since then they have sent me at least 1 spam email a week. About once a year I ask them if they are using BTC yet. Then I say "Ok, well let me know when you do."

Taking a few minutes for my transaction getting added to the ledger would be acceptable. A few seconds would be ideal.

30-60 minutes is not when all I can do is sit with my thumb up my ass waiting for it to be accepted and needing the money to move.

Consider what you are selling/buying.
If I were selling a yatch then I would want to see 5 - 6 confirmations. That is an hour or so wait, but not that long considering the scale of the purchase. If I were selling a flashlight then I would not wait at all. The effort and expense of faking a Tx is far greater than the gain of a flashlight. This why McDonald's can take a credit card for a burger. They have no idea if the Tx is legit, but they do know it is not feasible to make a fake card to get a burger.

1670  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is too slow on: June 14, 2016, 04:44:32 PM
Bitcoin transactions are the fastest global transactions ever created in the history of history. Only an "in-person" cash transfer is faster. For comparison, a credit card takes 2 - 60 days if all goes well. No "fix" is needed as it works great.

i have my doubt that even a cash in eprson transaction is faster, usually you need to check carefully in real life with cash how much you are exactly givin, two times at least, it's easy to be wrong there

I was thinking of a confirmation rather than a transaction. I think you are right about an actual Tx. Mine normally take 1 - 3 seconds, and I suppose that it is faster than getting a dollar from your pocket.

1672  Economy / Economics / Re: Is it a good long term investment to buy 1 BTC today? on: June 14, 2016, 01:28:03 PM
Ok, now your question can be answered. Had you bought then you would have paid about $260 and now your coin would be worth about $700. So yes, you should have bought.
1673  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will never reach $700 again on: June 14, 2016, 01:23:45 PM
Another one bites the dust. When will people get tired of learning that  NO ONE KNOWS THE FUTURE?
1674  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin to be international currency on: June 14, 2016, 01:20:22 PM
It already is. I use it internationally all the time.  Huh

I have used it in Turkey, UK, Netherlands, Oman, USA, Jordan, Panama, Dubai, Israel, Canada, Japan, and soon in Iceland. That's international right?
1675  Other / Archival / Re: The future of bitcoin... on: June 14, 2016, 01:13:51 PM
I'll take my chances. I actually agree with you that fundamentals are all that matters, which is why bitcoin is crushing it. I fully expect to make millions more ignoring nonsense about ponzis, whales, and other ignorant ideas. Not that I'm complaining. Maybe this does suppress the price a bit and allow me to amass more. I could not be happier with my returns.
1676  Economy / Speculation / Re: Some predict rise to 500, others to 10,000, what is the truth? on: June 13, 2016, 08:24:06 PM
That is regarding rise before/during/after the halving. What arguments are there for one or the other predictions, what should I believe?

You should believe that you are wasting your time asking a question that is provably unknowable. You may get confident answers from people full of BS. But you will not get a real answer, because none of us knows? That is a fact.
1677  Economy / Economics / Re: Why Central Banks Will Fail at Digital Currency on: June 13, 2016, 08:19:15 PM
They will have a huge disadvantage when competing with bitcoin and they just don't seem to get it. Bitcoin's main advantages are because it is an open source, distributed network, and beyond the control of any entity. The plans I have seen banks pursue have them in control of distribution, production, and ownership. So they are just like bitcoin except that the bank will decide who gets them, how they can be used, where they can be used, how many will be produced, what the price will be, and these rules can change whenever the bank feels like it.

You have to be a sucker to use bank coins. Seriously, only a complete fool would chose their coupons over the universal money of bitcoin.
1678  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: please give your best advice for newbie? on: June 13, 2016, 05:50:23 PM
Just buy some and stop messing around. Had you done that a year ago you would have paid about $250. There is no free lunch here. If you beleive in BTC then use it and don't look back.
1679  Economy / Speculation / Re: Be sure, this will drop hard soon... and here is why... on: June 13, 2016, 05:17:13 PM

Guess he showed us.  Roll Eyes
The thing to be sure about is that no one knows the future.
1680  Other / Off-topic / Re: When is it useful to borrow bitcoin? on: June 13, 2016, 05:06:20 PM
This weekend should serve as a reminder of how foolish it is to borrow BTC. Had I borrowed .5BTC on Friday and agreed to pay back in BTC I would owe say $280 in BTC plus any interest. But by today I would owe $350 pus interest. So I paid an extra $70 and that is just the principal. I still also owe interest.

Just buy them.
