While it's expected to get to similar laws across EU related to crypto, pretty much the same as there are similar laws across EU for money handling, I'd love that people who know better the topic would read more and post more about it. We know that news are about getting "sensational" stuff, not information, and I fear that something similar goes on for this topic too. Of course we cannot expect anything good from the politicians, but nowadays bitcoin is getting into the "big money" club, rather than "money for geeks and junkies". This means not necessarily more restrictions for individuals (I hope!), but more clarity for businesses. And from what I've read here ( https://twitter.com/paddi_hansen/status/1771929859704389954 ) this is what's all about (clarity for businesses, at least for now).

I wouldn't have said this but I am much more concerned about the fact that we have been hearing so many people talking about holding Bitcoin for the long term and never selling. I find it so confusing that after investing so much in Bitcoin for years we won't want to sell our bitcoin till we die. It starts with the fact that the main rule is to invest only what you afford to lose. And if one has the possibility to keep the investment on, never sell and give it to his kids, why not? But imho it's not a healthy approach. Imho it's healthier to sell some, now and then, if that becomes meaningful. Just beware, any approach is a double edged sword. For example I hope that I could get to retire a tad earlier. Just, since I am living by "sell some" rule, plus for me Bitcoin was also earning, not that much of investment, I sold (to buy daily normal stuff) most of the coins I've earned. And this doesn't help much to my goal. It helped Bitcoin economy though. So you can get to regret you've sold. Or you can regret you never got to benefit your investment. Pick one!

One problem with owning bitcoin in an ETF is that liquidity is limited to U.S. market hours. Well, this happens when one buys IOUs signed by third party, no matter they are called Bitcoin ETF and they are pegged to Bitcoin. They work when the issuer works, not 24/7 like Bitcoin. Plus, as @cr1776 very well pointed this out, it's not a problem with Bitcoin. It's a problem with all ETFs, including gold. I will add, as usual, that I find interesting how much this guy writes about Bitcoin

Lol. I know lots of people who say that they could remember their passwords or whatever it is without writing it down because it is so common and easy to remember but maybe that is the problem. It is so common that it could be literally anything so it’s not memorable. I've written this a lot and will continue to do so: now you are young and remembering 12 words is piece of cake. But what will happen in 10 years of not needing them? Or what happens if one gets a stroke (I hope not) or an accident with head injury (again, I hope not)? How will remembering work then? Isn't it easier toy write it down and, if the amounts worth it, keep it very safe? PS. What's the actual reason for this necro bump, @TheDigitalMan? Wouldn't have been more meaningful to make a new topic and link there this old one?

Emirate.

but has the physical quality of all HW wallets crap I don't have that much experience, I knew that Ledger Nano S screen dies off (sooner or later) and the Nano X battery is a sad joke; but I somewhat expected the more expensive ones are at least a tad better built. Good to know... On the other hand, the truth is that nowadays most products are built cheap and crap...

but the problem I'm having now as a new person in the system is how to get more merit.
Merit is given for useful, helpful information. This being said, as new user, if you are not knowledgeable in the topics you are visiting and you are learning now, it's absolutely natural that the merit eludes you. But merit should not be the purpose of being here, right? So keep learning and the day will come you will become really helpful. And then, with the right amount of activity, merit will be not an issue. TL;DR: For now you need patience and more learning. Merit will come later.

What did he eventually gain from claiming to be Satoshi when he had zero chance of proving it in or out of a Court of law? He had some successes - from intimidating devs to quit, to the point when a judge ruled that Cobra has to filter UK users from accessing the whitepaper at bitcoin.org. I expect that he thought that his bullshitting will convince eventually everybody, at least until the point he gets the patents he wanted. There may also be that he didn't want to go this far, he expected to only con some non-technical rich peeps to get an easy life, but it all went on with his backer(s) pushing him into this... shit show. I really hope it's over.

Please vote and give us your pros and cons in a friendly and civilized manner. Imho it is always about nuances. Some exaggerate and use too many colors, too much bold, and in many cases they still have an ugly wall of text, just more colored. Some can format it nicely, maybe add a hint of color here and there and make it so nice that even those opposing colors will like it. Sadly under this kind of polls I expect to see the first kind of posts, hence my vote is against it. But it's a free world and a free forum: you are free to post in the way you like it and... no offense intended (at all!) I am free to ignore you if I find out for example that your posts constantly make my eyes hurt.

I like it, it's a nice and handy way to store the seed on metal. And even if the "alphabet" is not widely known, it's easy to keep it... pretty much everywhere at hand, even in cloud, since it's public information.
Some warnings still apply: it's not a standard method and you may forget or, even worse, if you're gone suddenly, your heirs will not know what those strange glyphs are and may just throw away "that junk". Keep in mind I talk here about decades.

I think that corruption can only be eliminated in an isolated environment. Bitcoin cannot fight corruption, and the state also needs corruption to control officials. Otherwise, officials will be uncontrollable people. In rich countries there is less corruption at a low level where ordinary citizens interact, but in poor countries you will see corruption all the time.
Imho the logic is a bit different. First of all you need clear differentiation between the powers in the state. Of course, because of corruption, this will not always work well, but in time it will adjust. Then training is also necessary: those fighting corruption have to learn to find it and also how to find and lock the illegal money. Of course, you can argue that this costs money. I will say that even in the corrupt countries people can learn, just in many cases the incentive is not great and not so visible plus the politicians try to keep the population uneducated so they can keep earning their votes. Sooner or later the population will fed up and will stop voting the corrupt people especially if their corruption is exposed often enough. Now about the "in rich countries" part. Many countries have become rich through 2 "pillars": higher education of people and less money stolen through corruption. So imho a country becomes rich by fighting the corruption, not the other way around. And when the different powers of the state work well, the corrupt people get - sooner or later - caught. That's what you find "less corruption" "in rich countries". They are not better nor more honest. Just more efficient through education.

I think the correct strategy is to always spend from the UTXO with the highest amount of bitcoin. Is there is a flaw in this strategy?
Well, if you have many UTXO and also spend a lot, sooner or later you can easily end up with small inputs off this, so you still have to consolidate now ant then. The strategy is not very bad, but not the best either. However, I feel that the problem of small inputs is coming more from how you earn/get to your custody those UTXO (so you may not be in real danger). Since I have - now and then - to convert Bitcoin into fiat (sadly), one strategy I take is that when I have to spend I pick some 1-2 UTXO with the sum not that far from the amount I need, and the change I send to the centralized wallet that I use to convert to fiat (not nice, but meh).

Your fight against phishing sites has only just begun
Indeed. And it just occurred to me that although I've talked about this not long ago, I didn't warn eXch explicitly: From what I've seen not so long ago on another website that became very popular and next the number of phishing sites started to grow, the next step was that the phishing sites started reporting the original site (!!) to search engines as copy/clone/fraud (!!). Imho you (eXch) should think one more step ahead and prepare your homework well.

How can you prove to someone that you generated a random number? Try answering yourself this question, and see why this consensus protocol is infeasible to have.
Exactly. OP seems to have missed the fact that anybody can make his own wallet, since it's just code, and mimic being "good citizen", but not obeying the randomness rule. Sorry OP, but this can't work.
