Idealists don't understand if everything under the sun was equal, everything would be dead. We do with what we have can what we can.

Who are you talking to me or someone else? And I'm pretty sure it goes "We do what we can with what we have"  Wink
1950  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 11:31:06 AM
Your right with the definition. And I also somewhat agree with your analogy. The question is now is if you would rather have a place where you can express a limited opinion or no place at all.

Well, if the limited opinion actually means pretty much no-one (e.g a couple of people) actually read/digested/understood my opinions I would rather not spend my time trying to convey and get my point across, as it wouldn't have much an effect anyway and would be a waste of time. And actually no place at all in this forum's term should mean no forum at all right, or at least no new users? Wouldn't that also once again be detrimental to Bitcoin, as it would be deemed a secretive, private thing that few people had access to?
1951  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 11:21:42 AM
It is private in property so the owners can do what they want with it as they deem fit and best for the website. Even if it is to make a newbie forum to limit trolling.

Also what happened in the past few days was. Numerous trolls from a lot of websites with it was somethingawful, 4chan, came here for the sole purpose of pissing everyone off and hurting the development of Bitcoin. This was not conducive to Bitcoin, business types were leaving because the forums were full of flame wars, and threads with absolutely no purpose except to see the community burn.

Well, I stand corrected with my understanding of the syntax and grammatical logic behind your post Wink
Regardless, as I stated earlier, there is no actual good reason to make this forum a private one. By all means they can and it's up to them, however it would be quite detrimental to Bitcoin. However, keep in mind by making a newbie forum you're effectively singling out people who are generally new to Bitcoin. If every single shop in the world started being racist (I couldn't think of a nicer word, so I hope this doesn't start one of those "Ugh racist" threads) and you were singled out, I doubt you would be very happy at all. Especially when you've come to do some legitimate business and buy people's products. While it doesn't have the same obligations to sell products, this forum is pretty much the figurehead of Bitcoin, so what it does can have an impact on people's perception of Bitcoin.

Thanks.

I believe the mods of have changed the requirements now so this thread may be irrelavent. Of course you can always change your thread to reflect this! Cheesy

Edit by Maged:
The requirement is no longer 50 posts:

Thanks to some code provided by Disposition, there is now a mix of post count and "time online" requirements. You must have spent 8 hours online and posted 5 posts. This should be easier to do.

Thanks.

Any community. If you walk into a house they are not obligated to let you stay and speak freely. The great thing about forums is there are so many and you can start your own. People don't understand forums on the internet are private not public. Just like how highways are public but home aren't. The means of getting you to a home is public but the house itself is not.

There is an FAQ about it. I mean comon...not everyone needs to ask what 1+1 is. If there is something that says Beginners Read This and it answers the questions your bring up. People aren't obligated to answer and especially if you have an answer for them that says READ THIS BEFORE CONTINUING.

If a forum is overrun with trolls and Open forum is no longer better than a Closed one as has occurred.

I hate to disagree with you on something so trivial (but this issue bugs me quite a lot), however private refers to either 2 or 3 (I assume, however feel free to correct me Wink ), and thus meaning that it is confined to a small group or for people immediately concerned.  If so why hasn't this forum been blocked off from people to whom it doesn't concern? The reason is that there is no actual good reason why it should be blocked off, thus anyone and everyone who want's to may view and participate in active (or inactive for some) conversation.

As for the rest of your points, I'm pretty much in agreement. Cheesy

Patience....it's not the end of the world.  It's 50 posts or 8 hours of time, both of which are really nothing in the grand scheme of things.  They have made the rules, and we must abide by them, this is normal life.

No, it's only 8 hours of time, you don't get the 50 posts option any more (unless I have extremely bad English)! I know that everything in the world has it's place and rules, however regardless there are nearly always exceptions (e.g back when you were a kid and you parents left you alone in the house to get some milk or whatever and told you not to leave the house but then your house started catching on fire, what would you do? I certainly know)

1955  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is this a scam? on: June 12, 2011, 10:49:40 AM
I would like to think not but I am not sure.

Just how do you get anything to start with? There are links to places to get free handouts but I have not found anything that pays anything, at least so far. There is mining though the consensus seems to be that for solitary miners there is almost no return and it may soon be not worthwhile trying, I have yet to find out how it all works myself so I cannot really comment on that yet, I'm still trying to get my head around the jargon.

As stated by people before me, Bitcoin is open source, and thus you're able to see it's inner workings yourself (if you wanted to do so) and check for yourself whether you should trsut this system or not. Well, as far as free handout's go, there are some links in the wiki page and on the Official Bitcoin pages, and you can just use this http://lmgtfy.com/?q=bitcoin+faucet (it's let me Google that for you, incase for some reason you haven't heard of it before!)

Personally, mining is a hard slog unless you have the proper hardware, and while I don't (I have a Nvidia card Sad ) it's still is quite contenting to see you earn some BTC little by little. Cheesy

So it seems that maybe the only way to get bitcoins is to buy them using real (as in what is defined by governments) money which leaves me with the idea of scam in the back of the head.

I do see a lot of beggars asking for free handouts, I pretty sure not of lot of them are successful any more than the ones I see on the streets in real life.

Well, as I said, it's open source so you can check for yourself, and this project isn't exactly that small. So unless everyone using Bitcoin is in on some sort of scam (which I'm not aware of), I'm pretty happy to say it's legit for now! *hope's Tycho doesn't fork the chain anytime soon!* Cheesy

As for handout's, most people don't like beggars, rather they give it out to people they feel like, this all the addresses in people's signature's so that you can send them some BTC if you like them or their posting or whatever.
1956  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 10:40:53 AM
I don't think it's unreasonable to ask newbies to lurk for 8 hours before posting. Trolls can easily bypass it, of course, which is why there is also a post limitation. Hopefully mods will notice their spam before it starts getting out of this section.

While, I do generally agree about your measures to reduce trolling/spamming on these forums thus making them a lot more friendly/appealing/nicer overall, however what happens to people who legitimately want to get some help/support/ask about a bug by posting in a thread somewhere else on these forums (and yes I know about whitelisting, however depending on how long this remains, will the mods be able to keep up with whitelisting honest and legitimate people?). I doubt it's very appealing for those who want to get help and support from this community to sit it out and wait for 8 hours.

Thanks.

Um, i don't think you lowly noobs are granted permission to PM until you are an experienced spammer, sorry..

Lowly! *time to smite people in rage*  Angry
Seriously, not everything can be solved with PMs, it's a lot easier to get support from a thread with multiple people reading it than PM everyone you think can help Wink
1958  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 09:28:16 AM
Hey I guess it's just a pay for what you get type of scenario. Newbie help is pretty much free since guides exist and in the unlikely situation where a newbie has a question that hasn't been unanswered a mod or other people probably are asking and are willing to answer that question. That's the idea of bringing good topics into the main forums.

Well, I guess it depends on what sort of help your looking for. If it's for a random bug, which has never occurred ever (as in literally ever, not figuratively) I doubt anyone would already have the answer to this. Include the fact that few experienced people (aside from the mods) would actually come here to help, you're pretty much not going to be getting much support Sad

NVIDIA cards suck for mining, but is a win for gaming. Smiley
use the ATI 6xxx cards instead Smiley

Yes, as stated Nvidia cards are not as good for mining as ATI cards (this pretty much to every single card out there) due to it's architecture. If you want to look you can check here, it's pretty straightforward:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Why_a_GPU_mines_faster_than_a_CPU#Why_are_AMD_GPUs_faster_than_Nvidia_GPUs?

As for your optimal MH/s, I'm not too sure as I don't have that much experience with different hardware set-ups as I'm not a hardcore miner (I use a Nvidia card too!  Cheesy).
1960  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 09:17:13 AM
I used to lurk too but I decided it was in my best interest to participate. Nothing prevents you from lurking, you still read posts.

True, however this rule prevents me from posting in a time where I actually want/need to, which when you're asking for help, is a lot better than just lurking and hoping an answer magically poof's above you head (or on these foums  Wink ).
