2041  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why do people give away so many coins? on: August 18, 2012, 08:52:19 PM
People who are into bitcoins what the system to thrive. I've never even owned a single whole bitcoin, but I still give back to the faucet sites that helped me out. And.....a "bitcoin future" would be breathtaking to see unfold.

Yep, you got that right, I always give back to people who help out and share with others. When you have your address in sight, and do or say nice things in the community, you will always get appreciated with coins, be sure about it  Smiley

2043  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: El único camino es la UNHP? (Arreglado) on: August 18, 2012, 08:24:32 PM

2044  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Poll] Accounts in bitcoind on: August 18, 2012, 07:49:51 PM
I have (unsuccessfully) tried to use them, but I am terribly comfortable with them.

I think the concept of accounts is probably better left to accounting software and don't really fit into the scope of what the bitcoind should be doing.  Bitcoind is not (and does/should pretend to be) an accounting program.

If it were up to me the developers should just cut them out and concentrate on more important things, perhaps extending the [comment] [comment-to] system to work with incoming transactions.

^lol, didn't see so much contradictions in the same post until now. How isn't bitcoin an accounting software when it has to account for all the unspent inputs available to it?

Accounts work as ribuck said, for individual user accounting and they provide allot of features when used correctly. Like taking the burden of accounting of your main database and maintaining correct user balances, in case of chain reorgs. You can even have a complete website or app failure and no backups of the main database, but the coins are kept intact in every user's account with only one backup of wallet.dat.

I don't have the time to write a complete documentation, but I can assure you bitcoin accounts are useful and whoever tells you the opposite hasn't got a clue what are used for.

Sorry for the rant, I just turned my back for a moment lol

@weex learn how to "move" coins between accounts and you will see how easy the accounting gets, with no database overhead and it just works. Start using queues in case you want to have your app work smoothly and prevent accounts going negative if it isn't desired. That's all, now keep developing your app, bitcoin is all set-up.
2045  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: August 18, 2012, 06:00:22 PM
Multisig addresses require m-of-n signatures to spend from.  There are n total keys that can sign, and you need m <= n  of them to successfully spend.  For example, with m = 2 and n = 3 you can do a trade of physical goods with built-in escrow.  The escrow holds one key, and each of the sender and receiver of the good hold the other keys.  The buyer sends his bitcoin to the 2-of-3 address and the seller ships out the goods.  The seller than creates and signs a transaction that spends the coins from the 2-of-3 address to his personal address.  When the buyer receives the goods, he also signs the transaction and the coins are moved.  If there is a dispute, the escrow can either sign the transaction, awarding the coins to the seller, or can ask the buyer to create and sign a transaction that returns the coins to him, and then sign that one.  This can all be done without including the escrow except when necessary as all you need to know is the escrow's public address.  They can have an outstanding offer to settle any disputes provided that if arbitration is necessary they get X BTC (or a %) as a fee.
Thank you for this - it makes a lot more sense now.  It would be nice if there was a short little video on youtube explaining this to the common bitcoin user.

There is no UI yet, and the code with the command line support still hasn't been in a release yet.  Give it some time.

Or a major announcement  Grin

All right, all right, enough speculation.

I'll be announcing http://bitundies.com/, where you will be able to buy high-quality Alpaca wool undergarments for bitcoin.

Got your PM, sorry I'm not used to be left without a response in the middle of a transaction, now I know you I have to be more patient with you. Sent you a PM  Smiley

2052  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Whitehat Penetration Testing on: August 17, 2012, 08:15:45 PM
There are already services out there for this. The company I work for just had a team come in and do this, providing a decent report of vulnerabilities.

Rather than look into the Bitcoin community for this, look into experts who do this for a living every day.

Any of them accepting bitcoins?  Smiley

Very interesting. Thanks for the heads up.
